Joel is a former strength coach at the University of California, Berkeley, and additionally, has 17 years of experience coaching track and field on the NCAA, club and private level.
A lifelong student of human performance, Joel has achieved NAIA All-American status as a track and field competitor and has been blessed with the opportunity to facilitate the training process of a great number of athletes, personally and remotely. His results have included NCAA D1 and D3 track and field champions, American, and Master's World records. - Reviewed in the United States on July 20, 2020Speed Strength is an absolute beauty! The setup of the book easily spreads out each aspect of sprint mechanics and training. The graphs, pictures, and sentence structure really allowed me to absorb so much information. I can’t wait to implement some of these methods with my athletes. Easily one of the best training books I have ever read. I learned so much valuable training information. Can’t believe this much information is available at this price. Looking forward to listening to the podcast more and reading more of Joel’s content!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 7, 2020I read speed strength and it was one the best books I have ever read. I was then determined to get to know Ioel personally. It just so happened he moved to where I lived by so I aksed him to come train with him. He was kind enough to give me a chance to train with him. In just a short amount of time not only has he helped me overcome physical barriers he has really got me back to the heart of what it means to be a human. I am really fortunate to have him in my life and if anybody has the chance to come see him in person I will not a doubt in my heart know he can help in some way.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 18, 2020I have read a number of speed training/sprint mechanics books and Joel's work is second to none. His concepts and explanations break the mold of commonly held beliefs and give fresh insight into the art of getting faster. Many of the methods laid out in this book have paid immediate dividends both for my performance and the performance of my athletes. This is a must read for any track/strength and conditioning coach.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 10, 2024The book covers sprinting mechanics very well. It also has photos and video links showing plyometric and strength training. New research shows heavy sleds can help you sprint faster.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 5, 2019Very holistic approach to speed training. Awesome content about how humans naturally know how to run fast but sometimes get coached out of it. Great info on mechanics, different ways to train different athletes, how and when to use the weight room to help progress speed and when to not use it. Overall an awesome book, and one that I'll keep going back to and learn from.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 19, 2019Speed Strength is a comprehensive and invaluable tool for the development of speed, athleticism, and optimal locomotive function...in athletes of all types and abilities. Joel's knowledge of the literature, and his own extensive experience, make Speed Strength a definitive text in human performance. Kudos!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 19, 2019By far the best book about the sprint technique and training. Especially the importance of horizontal power production and then the description of the role of hip strength is really unique. Trying myself to document this and have found this book as extremely valuable source.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you want to be fast read this book ASAP!
This book was a game-changer for me! The book is absolutely worth buying it.
The book is an easy read because he breaks down the literature, evidence-based information and his overwhelming knowledge from his podcasts in a way everyone can understand it.
The author provides clear information all way from beginning to end. He describes every aspect of sprinting in detail which helped me a lot to understand this complex human movement better. Further, he provides pictures and videos for training purposes and explains also why he prefers these to sum everything up on how to plan sprint training.
