- Reviewed in the United States on December 15, 2022I highly recommend this book to learners at the A2-B1 level. You will find yourself so immersed in the story that you will be actually thinking in Italian, not needing a translation, even though your skills are still limited. That’s a wonderful way to acquire the language naturally.
The author’s writing skills are also very commendable. She knows how to build characters, how to create suspense, how to show not tell, and when to quickly summarize events to maintain reader comprehension and interest. Even though I don’t normally read crime stories, I really enjoy her books.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 22, 2020This is a rare combo. Usually the books you'll find for Italian learning are either: 1) Good tools for language learning, or 2) Interesting to read. Many of them are neither. One of the more popular series of "easy readers" in Italian features a series of stories with no plot. Every story unfolds as follows: the main character wants something, and then they get it with no resistance whatsoever. Not super interesting to read.
This book (and the others by the same author) are fantastic in both regards. The grammar and vocabulary are things you'd hear in actual conversation. She doesn't use the literary past tense, which is only really useful if you want to learn Italian specifically to read or write books in the language. But on the other side of the coin, the language and vocab are advanced enough to challenge you, so that you can really grow from the effort.
And the stories themselves are interesting enough to make you want to come back and keep reading. She really understands how to create suspense, and how to structure a story. These stories aren't going to win any awards. But they're the best you'll find in the realm of language-learning literature. And I can honestly say that I really enjoyed them.
My only regret about the books written by this author is that there aren't more of them. Whenever the next one in the series is released, I'll be picking it up immediately.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 14, 2018The storyline is not sophisticated but still sufficiently engaging. The style is fluid, the vocabulary appropriate for the level, and overall very enjoyable.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 6, 2020This was a perfect book for learning Italian. The story was engaging with some tension.
I liked the story development and the thought process of the main character. Each chapter has a short summary of the contents.
Thankfully, Sonia Ognibene wrote the text in present tense and passato prossimo rather than Passato Remoto as most Italian literature is written. The tenses allowed me to read through the text and concentrate on the story rather than trying to look up the translation.
I also like that the author puts idioms and common expressions in parentheses (in Italian) following the expression - which are really not literally translatable.
The last page offers a link to review common expressions and grammer rules.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 19, 2018My favorite author for Italian learners. I've read all of Sonia's books for Italian learners, and I am looking forward to more! Her stories would be engaging and entertaining even for native speakers. Normally I find books written for language learners to be really boring and tedious. The quality of these stories compared to other books written for learners is outstanding. I really enjoyed this book, it's a really interesting and clever mini-crime drama. And as always the way she helps you learn new words and phrases along the way is very effective. Very well done! Grazie.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 3, 2025A very interesting book to incorporate new vocabulary. I have enjoyed all 5 of Sonia Ognibene novels.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 26, 2021This is a nice mystery story involving a young lady who slowly becomes wrapped up in a murder mystery. Solving the mystery brings passion to what had been a boring dreary life, and ultimately brings her closer to her family. It's a step beyond the previous book in the series in terms of language difficulty. Reading on a Kindle has the advantage that you can highlight text you don't understand and instantly see a Dictionary definition or Bing translation. On the other hand, every time you do that you have to contend with the Kindle throwing a Wikipedia lookup at you -- a "feature" which cannot be disabled -- so, it's a toss up as to whether using the Kindle is worth this annoyance.

4.0 out of 5 stars Muy adecuado.
--Lectura amena y divertida que aporta gramática, vocabulario y diversión. Gracias a un lenguaje correcto y de historias comunes profundizaremos en la bella lengua italiana, sin necesidad de clases caras y a nuestro ritmo.
-- Concluyendo, por muy poco aprenderá mucho y con situaciones actuales, no lo dude.

5.0 out of 5 stars Can’t put it down! So good!
Such a great book. It is so hard to find books for beginners. I found it extremely engaging and hard to put down. Will be buying all the other ones as well. Would recommend to anyone learning Italian. Only wish there was audio.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ottimo
Questa storia è molto buona per stranieri che imparano l'italiano. Ho comprato insieme l'altre storie. Ogni giorno sto leggendo uno o due capitolo, due volte. Quando leggo secondo volta, prendo nota di parole che non so, come studiare lezione. Vi ringrazio.

Just started learning Italian and enjoyed La Prossima Vittima because I could follow the story line and it was far more interesting and realistic than other graded readers.
