The Necronomnomnom: Recipes and Rites from the Lore of H. P. Lovecraft Hardcover – October 1, 2019
Purchase options and add-ons
A Lovecraft-inspired cookbook with recipes to whet your appetite and threaten your sanity
Reading about the slime- covered, non- Euclidean ruins of the sunken city of R’lyeh or the squamous, tentacled deity who slumbers there would make anyone hungry. Starting with the puns and working from there, authors Mike Slater and Thomas Roache have summoned forth 50 funny, bizarre, and horrible dishes such as:
• The Deep Fried Deep One
• Nog Sothoth
• Cthus-Koos
• The Great Old Buns
• The Gin and Miskatonic
Like H. P. Lovecraft’s Necronomicon, the legendary and forbidden book of the dead that is “alien to all sane and balanced readers,” this cookbook contains many dark (but still delicious) secrets within its pages. The book comes infested with sanity- melting and mouth- watering illustrations, as well as annotations full of crazed discoveries and desperate warnings about the recipes that brave readers will undertake.

NEW ENGLAND DAMNED CHOWDER
SERVES FIVE, AS EACH OF THE CORNERS OF AN INVERTED PENTAGRAM
In a dutch oven or other capacious cooking vessel, cook the swine meat of divine glory over medium heat. One quarter hours should see them crisp, remove then to parchment to drain. Squander not the juices of the meat, for now shalt thou baptise the onion, celery, and garlic, saut´ing one twelfth hour or until tender. As for the fate of the potatoes: add them now, along with the water, clam juice, boullion, pepper, and thyme. Boil it!
Boil it all! Once at a boil, reduce heat.
Patience now . . . simmer unveiled for 15 to 20 minutes or until the many cubed are tender.
In a small skull— or bowl—combine the flour and 1 1/ 2 cups of the heavy cream until smooth. Stir this slowly into the rest. Bring all to a boil; mutter the incantation, as instructed below, and stir until thickened.
Add slowly the clams as well as the remaining heavy cream, and put it again to the flame until warmed through, yet not boiling. Crumble in the reserved bacon, Prince of Meats, leaving some for a garnish on top.
WHAT YE MUST OFFER
- 5 center-cut bacon strips, thick cut
- 1 small onion, 2 stalks celery, 2 small cloves garlic, finely chopped
- 4 potatoes, cubed

About the authors
Mike grew up in the Philadelphia suburbs, where he was taught to read on comic books and then moved on to light fantasy such as Piers Anthony and hard sci-fi from Larry Niven.
Things went decidedly darker when he discovered Stephen R. Donaldson and Michael Moorcock. Young Darth Slater went over to the Dark Side more or less completely when Michael Whelan's Del Rey Lovecraft covers caught his eye on the shelves of his most beloved haunt - B. Dalton Books. He was probably too young for those books at the time, but fell in love with the prose and dark ambiance of the works. Roleplaying games weren't far behind, and Sandy Petersen's Call of Cthulhu sealed the awful compact with the dark muses already flitting about the edges of his vision.
Though the baby picture of him in the cultist duds explains much, Mike honed his storytelling and pun-slinging powers through college and grad school - and today enjoys the writing and creation of games and stories almost invariably possessed of at least some dark humor.
It's not all madness and shadows, though. Mike is a family man, and beloved of his two beautiful children and soulmate shieldmaiden, Maggie. They enjoy the outdoors, family game night, and quiet evenings with books or visiting friends in the wilds of Pennsylvania.
When in need of relaxation, contemplation, or inspiration- Mike can be found under the naked stars, by the fires of BurnHenge.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 12, 2025The recipes aren't anything crazy it's mostly for the illustration and cute descriptions in cult-like prose. It's a nice coffee table book and looks unique (raised embossing or whatever it's called is a nice touch on the hard-cover). The recipes all seem decent there's nothing too complex or anything so even a beginner could make most of this stuff with substitutions. (As much as I'd love to eat an albino penguin a chicken will have to do)
- Reviewed in the United States on January 28, 2025Perfect cookbook for the strange and unusual. The illustrations are really nice and make this cookbook a bit extra special.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 25, 2024I love that the summoning instructions, sorry, RECIPES, are illustrated in what looks like blood. Also love the section for "little monsters", for those of us not old enough to appreciate spirits. Also all the recipes are written in plain english in the back if the instructions are unclear (and they are occasionally, but I love it).
But truly, the artwork in this book is fantastic. The recipes are pretty standard, nothing groundbreaking or anything, but the writing and the presentation are fantastic. Definitely the book to pull out for those halloween parties. A few recipes actually sound pretty tasty and I'm excited to try them. Husband got a 10/10 for birthday present.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 11, 2024Love the look and feel of this book. The had illustrations are brillant. The wording for the recipes crack me up. I really feel like im reading something from the ancient past. Note they also rewrote the recipes to understand in modern times. I tried a few recipes but had to improvise some of the ingredients. Overall great book to have in your collection.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 4, 2024is just a good book for those who want recipes with fun Lovecraft inspired names that don't call for super out there ingredients.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 3, 2023I love everything about this book. It is well written and cheeky and the illustrations are gorgeously madness inducing, yet the recipes are edible and there's something in it for everyone. I appreciate the incorporation of Lovecraftian lore with the variety of recipes offered, and the fact that there's a regular cookbook section so the normies don't drive themselves to madness trying to decode this tome. It's beautifully bound and well written and something that the Great Old Ones would certainly approve of. I've shared the link and spread the gospel more times than I have tentacles to count.
Buy. This. Book.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 7, 2024Great for Halloween for sure
- Reviewed in the United States on July 13, 2022At the risk of sounding like a fake review...
I bought this for my husband as a gift. I was worried that this was going to look nice but not be worth the normal price point so I waited until it went on sale.
I got this and hoped he would like it.
He loves it!! He spent the entire evening just reading through it. Smiling and chuckling at all the nuances.
I couldn't be happier with his reactions and he couldn't be happier with the book.
I wholeheartedly recommend this for anyone who likes Lovecraft, and if you dabble in the kitchen that's even better.
I do have to be honest and provide one caveat: my husband asked me to give this 5 stars, so I guess this is really his review. He has NEVER asked me to review anything we buy. So he must really love this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simplemente genial
Una de las mejores ediciones que he visto para un libro de cocina temático. 100% recomendado para los fans del horror cósmico.
También incluye las recetas explicadas con claridad al final del libro que eso es un detalle.

5.0 out of 5 stars Layout and Recipes stay true to theme
This book is awesome! It has so many more recipes that I thought it would and they are all set up in a very Lovecraftian theme. Some of them are written a bit vaguely and hard to follow but there is a fix for that! At the end of the book they have included a "translation" of each into plain easy-to-follow recipes. Making some Deep Fried Deep One and Cultists in Robes for the minions this week!

O livro é muito bonito, o capricho com as ilustrações, material e historia são massa pra ter na coleção, como livro de receitas é meio complicadinho por alguns ingredientes não serem tão comuns aqui no Brasil, mas ainda assim, é muito bom
