About the author

Hugh Blane doesn’t claim to know everything about your business. He does claim however to know more than anyone about converting human potential into accelerated business results – that’s why his clients call him The Talent Alchemist.
His consulting firm, Claris Consulting, is retained by clients such as Microsoft, Sony Pictures, Nordstrom, Costco, Stanford University, Swedish Health Systems, Aramark, Spacelabs Medical, Sodexho, Pepperdine University and the University of Texas in Qatar to challenge assumptions, jettison complacency and catapult growth.
Hugh’s specialty is working with senior teams and high potential employees and was recognized when he was selected as the exclusive coach for the prestigious Helen M. Young Fellowship at Pepperdine University. He is an Adjunct Faculty member at the School of Law and Entrepreneurship at Pepperdine University and has taught business literacy courses to homeless men and women through the Union Rescue Mission in Los Angeles. He has also served as on the Strategic Planning Committee of the Boys and Girls Club.
Hugh and his family emigrated from Scotland to Canada and then to Birmingham Alabama in 1969 to escape financial hardship and begin their lives anew. The culture shock experienced upon his arrival in Birmingham six years after Bull Connor ordered the use of fire hoses and attack dogs, along with the bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church was profound. His commitment to organizational transformation came as a direct result of being witness to a chaotic time that changed the course of race relations in the United States.
Hugh once ran with the bulls in Pamplona and learned how not to get gored. He is happily married to Alyson and they love traveling, wine and good food. They reside in the small beach community of Normandy Park, Washington with a giant black Schnauzer they rescued named Brooks. They’re still debating whether they rescued Brooks or if Brooks rescued them.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 4, 2025After years of taking random advice from supervisors, direct reports, team members and coworkers I was feeling lost and confused. Everyone leads different and I wanted my leadership to be impacting. This book will give you the tools to be a great leader for yourself and your team. It does that by giving you a chance to discover the leader you want to be. Must read hands down.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 3, 2019As an MBA student looking to figure out what I want to do for my career and how to best use my MBA, this book was tremendouly helpful in helping me think through what my purpose is. And now that I have at least a rough draft of my prupose as a business leader, helping employees flourish leading to excellent customer experiences, I have much more narrow of a focus. I am so grateful for this book!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 30, 2017Hugh is a leadership expert who has clear thinking and clear writing -- exactly what you get in this book (or in his consulting)! I spoke with Hugh recently and these 7 Principles were boiled down from 13. This tells me a few things: (a) this guy KNOWS leadership and (b) he writes about what is critical to being an excellent leader (Mindset, Awareness) and (c) he is an expert because of his ability to condense and make things simple - not more complex.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 25, 2017This is a book that will help you become a great leader with a wonderful mind-set. It will make you a value creator.Highly recommend this for your success
- Reviewed in the United States on April 6, 2022Hugh Blane makes fundamental concepts related to leadershipcear and compelling. This book is full of encouraging stories and action steps you can apply today.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 27, 2018Great book as a hardcopy with key insights, however, it is not practical as an audible. I found myself pausing the audible and going back to make lists and to take notes that the author was telling me to do; I definitely couldn't listen to it during my long commutes. Again, great book but I believe this would have been better if I had purchased it as a hardcopy.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 16, 2019I appreciate that it is thoughtfully segmented in the 7 Principles. Lots of examples and down to earth explanations.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 23, 2019Applicable and will make a difference in your leadership and team! Even applicable in any human interaction.

3.0 out of 5 stars an interesting read, but with some noise
The principles: purpose, promises, projects, persuasion, praising, perseverance, and preparation all make tacit sense, though they are often laboured and at times forced (had we considered other letters from P this may have worked better), which means that they don’t always gel together.
Each principle feels like it has unnecessary additional sub points that are at times thought provoking (some of the reflective questions) but at other times distracting.
I’ve perhaps taken note from blog posts on the subject of transformational leadership and summaries of this book than I did directly from the book.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Cover page is bad at all. It gives you the feeling to want to pen you see.
Not it yet. Though the synopsis feels good and a must read on lesdership.
