If you have seen the classic Gary Cooper film, you know about Sergeant York. But to really know the American hero, you need to read his own story in his own words. “An American legend.”—The New York Times

October 8th, 1918—amid the last of the Allies attempts to the Germans, Sergeant Alvin York of Tennessee, found himself and his platoon of only seventeen men trapped in the thick of heavy machine gun fire. Rather than retreating or calling upon the artillery to take out the nest, York single-handedly took out twenty-five Germans, dropping them one-by-one, and captured many more.

This is only one of the many tales of York’s famed heroism, which were heralded as some of the most impressive battle stories in history of modern warfare.
Sergeant York contains the legendary soldier’s war diaries, which offer up-close snapshots of his fabled military career.

Included in this new edition of a classic work are new forewords written by York’s son and grandson, which provide both personal and historical recollections of their predecessor. In
Sergeant York, experience the fascinating life of an American hero.

About the Author

Alvin York, or “Sergeant York,” was born in Pall Mall, Tennessee, in 1887. He was drafted into the army and swiftly became one of the most decorated and accomplished soldiers in World War I, having received the Congressional Medal of Honor for his heroic action in the Meuse-Argonne Offensive, among other notable accolades. When he returned from the war, he was greeted with public outpouring and celebration, largely due in part to an article in the Saturday Evening Post that had circulated prior to his arrival, which detailed York’s heroic actions publicly to a large readership. York passed away in 1964 at the age of 76.

Purchased this for my husband. He is enjoying reading this. Good autobiography.

Great read. In these wildly uncertain time, with people spouting nonsense and wishy-washy statements about everything and everybody, it was nice to return to a time where things were more cut and dry. Sgt. York had fought his demons and come out on the other side with a new lease on life, only to be challenged by the times. No doubt he would have stayed in the Hill and lived his good life, turning the soil and tending to family. His journey to Europe and the Twilight Zone (compared to his home in Tennessee) threw many things strange in the path of this mountain man. He was to be tested and tried in the court of life. I identified with many of the country values and lessons handed down by the pioneers before him. I found a familiar taste in the atmosphere of his world growing up. Sgt. York face the war as he faced a rough and rocky piece of farmland, with a steady hand, stern gaze and a determined heart. In the end both would yield more a new generation of growth. There are a few books on this life and all are different in small ways. The hero is either bigger or smaller depending on the read. One thing is certain, his was a story that was needed in the times he was living. The country needed a Sgt. York. We could use him again today.

Had seen the original 1941 movie starring Gary Cooper, and was engrossed with it. Unfortunately, the movie was limited in its scope. Was so glad I read this book, and was provided with “the rest of the story”, and it is well worth it.

This is a wonderful tribute to a man who believed in his country and used his upbringing to survive a war. He helped his fellow comrades while in a midst of a war. Amazing read and we as a country should never forget history.

Our family listened to an audio drama about Sergeant York and so we wanted to read his journal together now that we all have context (preschool-adult ages) the book is beautiful, the pictures are always a delight, and we loved seeing his actual handwriting. This story is inspiring and has been a great launching point for many rich conversations about duty and respect. I would encourage others to take your time reading through and discussing if you have a large age range like we do

This fascinating story of an Appalachian youngster born in a time of long hunters, bushwhackers, moonshiners, feudists, and shooting matches, finds Christianity; gets drafted into the First World War, and incredibly becomes possibly America's greatest war hero. Alvin York's story is rich with perspective and details his unique experiences, and he faithfully kept a diary that helped validate all of it! Amazing!

While we live in a time when the mindless are pulling down monuments rather than learning from the past, Sgt. York's legacy stands for what's best about our country and mankind. He upheld: simple pure values, hard work, courage, commitment and selflessness. His memory and the principles deserve to be preserved and upheld by us all.

2.0 out of 5 stars I tried to get through the book

At the start the author said York's own language would be used but it only took a couple of chapters to make reading difficult . Written almost 100 years ago I should have given it some leeway but I gave up. York as a man of his time and his accomplishments were outstanding but I could not get over the total callous disregard for both human and animal life. His basic bible based beliefs and lack of education unfortunately resound in today's usa
