Quests, adventure and spirituality runs deep in David Collis. As a young man, a “Road to Damascus” experience catapulted him on a spiritual odyssey where he explored one facet of Christianity after another. He is passionate about the world’s religions; lectured on the Gospel of Thomas and traveled the world to visit sacred sites. He also built a stone energy circle and labyrinth, conducted a vision quest and created a brand of sacred symbols he maintains are, “Original symbols for a new era.”
David Collis holds a BFA and MFA.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 20, 2018David Collis's work, Interviewing Jesus: The Man, is a work of scholarship, imagination and, might I say, of personal love and affection for his subject. As a writer and novelist who has worked for decades in the milieu of "alternate" biblical history and meaning, I sensed David did his homework for this book, not with the intent of complete historical or theological accuracy (those who have plowed this field for long enough have discovered there is no such thing), but to reach deep and draw the essential juices from the story of Jesus as presented in the Gospels, mistakes and all.
I found his dialog format largely effective although I did subtract a star because it became mildly repetitive in a book of this length, and I sometimes felt that questioner (the author) and answerer (Jesus) were not sufficiently differentiated in places--a bit more "conflict" would have been interesting. Picky? Yes.
Highly recommended for those who want to have a personal experience with a very human Jesus. An experience that will be highly transformative nonetheless. Thank you, David, for this work.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 18, 2018Having read / studied Jesus and his life for over fifty years, I can unequivocally say this work is the best of all I have had the privilege of experiencing!! Mr. Collis' portrayal of the man I most can 'follow' is exceptional. Thank you.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 1, 2019I just couldn't maintain my interest in this book. Perhaps the question/answer format, other perhaps all too many silly questions and answers that seemed to be very much the Authors projections of his own opinions which were too obvious based on his trail of questions in the first place. This is a dialog with the Author and himself and I just couldnt care about it enough or muster enough curiosity to finish the book, I got half way through and gave it to the library.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 31, 2018I consider this book to be worth reading for some of its novel insights into the emotions and ideals of Jesus of Nazareth, the man, as he encountered and wrestled with both his own complex reality and the conditions of the societies, Jewish and Gentile, in which he found himself. But the reader should be cautioned that the author clearly favors a Gnostic understanding of both the origin and the later development of Jesus's insights.
Yet the group of disciples that Jesus himself recruited clearly favored a direction of doctrinal development leading to a high Christology. Their confidence in that direction of development was confirmed, in their own and their followers' estimation, by their continuation of the ability to manifest charismatic effects similar in nature to those associated with Jesus. Thus they reasoned that they were guided by the same Spirit that was evident within Jesus throughout his public ministry.
It's also true that as the first generation of Jesus's followers died off with only a partial fulfillment of apocalyptic promises in the destruction of Jerusalem and its Temple by the Romans and without the literal return of Jesus as Son of Man riding on the clouds of heaven, some of the followers of Jesus opted for a more spiritual experience of the Word in the present world--thus embracing Christian Gnosticism. However, most of the immediate followers of the apostles opted to root the Christian movement in the Gentile world, especially after the Jewish rabbis declared the Nazorean sect to be heretical and expelled its members from the synagogues. The full acceptance of Jesus as a God-Man was much less problematic for those of a Greco-Roman cultural background than for those of a conservative Second-Temple Jewish background.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 13, 2018Generally it is best to approach things with an open, if cautious mind. This book was audio loaded onto my phone, for listening during a road trip. The author discusses his research then explains that he arrives at his script for the mock interview from contemplation and intuition. So far acceptable. Then in the early part of the interview he plainly confabulates that the claims of Christ, as universal savior, Lamb of God, etc are mere elaborations designed to ensare early gentile populations into nascent Christianity. Having multiple science degrees, and currently working on a second doctorate, and also having a masters in theology the immediate perception of an ad hoc pure speculation with the overall agenda of invalidating Christianity, and diminution of Christ. IMHO, if you are looking for insight into the nature and ontogeny of Christ this is not the place and seems to be agenda driven and deceptive.
