- Reviewed in the United States on November 1, 2017Kid Chef Bakes by Lisa Huff is our new favorite cookbook! We love it - we learned from it, made delicious food and enjoyed reading it.
As a parent of two kids (10 and 14), it is hard to find a great cookbook that does it all:
- Has recipes the kids can’t wait to try, and then are happy they did
- Is laid out in a way that supports their self-sufficiency in the kitchen with clear directions including what tools will be needed
- Encourages experimentation with “Things to Try”
- And teaches them (ok, teaches all of us!) new things in ways that make the learning fun with “Baking School” and helpful hints scattered throughout, like the one on page 108 about combining wet and dry ingredients) that helped us understand past outcomes that weren’t what we hoped for.
The language is clear and easy to understand for my ten year old. The Baking School is covers a wide array of topics concisely. And the knowledge there was very empowering to my younger baker as it helped her know more than her mom (how to cream butter and sugar most effectively!). I love that it makes baking an accessible adventure / experiment without talking down to the kids. My one wish, as a parent, is to understand the nutritionals or calorie count as that is part of the kitchen education I hope to impart to them - but they can also figure it out from the ingredients
The pictures and layout are bright, engaging and readable. It is a cookbook my daughter was happy to curl up with and read through like a book. :) And the recipes we’ve tried have come out wonderfully! Pecan Tassies, S’mores Bars and Yogurt Banana Bread. We also like the Buttermilk Chive Biscuits - They would be amazing with chili on a brisk fall day. Next up, we are looking to try a quiche.
And the best part is - I get to coach from the sidelines and enjoy their hard work. Great addition to anyone’s bookshelf!
Note, I received an electronic advanced reader’s copy in the hopes that I would review the book honestly. I loved it so much I purchased a paperback copy.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 17, 2019This book is perfectly constructed for teaching little ones about the joy of baking. My 8-year-old son loves it. It starts out with a few pages about baking basics, essential ingredients, and kitchen safety. I asked him to read through this section before we actually made anything. I expected him to think this was a terrible chore, but he enjoyed it and was asking good questions. It then moves on to a series of 7 recipes that teach basic baking skills. Work your way through these and you essentially complete a little Baking 101 course, learning how to use the oven, crack and separate eggs, melt chocolate, etc. Then you can move on to more advanced recipes like the zebra cake (pictured). My son was thrilled to produce something so cool and delicious. This book isn't just a collection of kid friendly, easy recipes. It's a very well thought out instructional book that progresses kids from total beginners to skilled junior chefs.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 6, 2022My 8-9 y/o daughter has enjoyed this cookbook and baked many of the recipes. She's gotten to the place where she can bake mostly on her own practicing with these recipes.
My one issue us some of the recipes are unnecessarily complicated. An example is the chocolate chip cookie recipe. It calls for refrigerating the dough for at least two hours. I have NEVER cooked a chocolate chip.cookie recipe that required refrigeration. Shortbread or sugar cookie, sure. But no one is making chocolate chip cookies to eat cookies three hours later. You make chocolate chip cookies so you can be eating a fresh cookie in 30 minutes or less! At least a warning at the beginning of the recipe would be nice. Luckily, we read ahead and skipped melting the butter and just kept it moving...
- Reviewed in the United States on April 9, 2020My 12 year old daughter is very into cooking and this cookbook has helped produce some very yummy meals and desserts she is super proud of and gets tons of compliments with. She’s been using it for a couple years, the recipes are very easy to follow but they’re actual food people want to eat- no “recipes” for PB&J. The pizza crust, pretzels, and macaroons are her personal faves and they really are delicious. For only around $12 I have brilliantly conceived and executed a plan to switch the chore of making family dinners from me to her and she actually enjoys it mwahahaha!!!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 26, 2019My 12 yr old daughter jumped right into this book! She has marked at least a dozen pages and baked the bite sized brownies. She put a little too much batter into the mini muffin pan so they spilled over but decorated with an M & M. They popped right out and were DELISH! The only thing I helped her with was getting the hot pan out of the oven. She was insistent on me not knowing what she was making etc. This book is great! It has sections that explain so much beyond the recipes. She is loving everything about it AND her 13 yr old brother was her Sous chef! Perfect.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 6, 2017I bought one for my own kids, and then several more for every child on my holiday gift list! A variety of recipes - not just "sweets" - but also breads and savory baked goods. There are tips scattered throughout the book that I really liked, such as "cleaning as you go" and mini science lessons thrown in - e.g. how/why yeast rises, and what different ingredients actually DO for the recipe. From a not-so-interested 9 year old who will only get involved in cooking to make desserts, to teenagers who aspire to be bakers and want to try things for themselves - this cookbook has been a great fit.

Great cookbook for my 6 year old! We got to baking as soon as we got this. There's some easy and some harder which is great. We made our own pizza dough which he had a blast doing. Highly recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars A successful christmas present for my 10-year old
Got this as a Christmas present for my 10-year old son and he loves it. The recipes are easy enough to teach him new tricks without being too complicated, we get to spend time together, and he gets to eat sweets - a win-win-win! Do beware that the recipes are done in American measurements.
