“One of the best reads of 2018." — Sean Hannity
"The book is well worth your time." — Megyn Kelly
"A story told with both heart and knowledge. Really good, go get it!" — President Donald J. Trump
No job is more of a pressure cooker than being a White House press secretary…especially in this White House.
For more than two decades, Sean Spicer had been a respected political insider, working as a campaign and communications strategist. But in December 2016, he got the call of a lifetime. President-elect Donald J. Trump had chosen him to be the White House press secretary. And life hasn’t been the same since. When he accepted the job, Spicer was far from a household name. But then he walked into the bright lights of the briefing room, and the cameras started rolling. His every word was scrutinized. Every movement was parodied. Every detail became a meme. And that’s just the public side. Behind the scenes, things were almost as difficult in an administration plagued by leaks that frustrated and angered both Spicer and the president. Not to mention the extraordinary pressures on Spicer’s family and his faith. Now, in his provocative and enlightening political memoir, The Briefing, Spicer reveals the truth behind some of the biggest news stories of our time, and he offers a glimpse into what it’s like to stand at the press secretary’s podium—and how he got there. The Briefing is the first insider account written by someone who worked on the Trump campaign, with the Trump transition team, and in the Trump White House—and has seen Donald Trump rallying voters, building an administration, and making crucial policy decisions. Spicer’s riveting and personal account makes The Briefing the must-read political memoir of the year.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 5, 2018This book has an easy, accessible writing style, though not the liveliest. Spicer comes across as a person of admirable character, who has made a lot of personal sacrifices, to work with a highly hostile and even toxic media. It is a fascinating chronicle about the relationship between the Trump administration and the press. The book is an even-keeled, rather than impassioned, retelling of Spicer’s tenure as a press secretary at the administration. It confirms many people’s disdain for the main stream media. So many reporters in the main stream media have so little journalistic integrity and so blatantly and unabashfully pursue their own agenda. In the end, they lose their credibility. They are the enemy of democracy — as clearly detailed in the book, they mislead the public with their one-sided, often made-up, distorted stories to advance their own partisan (liberal) agenda. The liberals truly have their golden trumpet in this country. It is good to know Spicer’s side of the many famous PR episodes of the Trump administration.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 8, 2018Spicer is a very likable human being. Great values. His book provides an insight into the job of Press Secretary. I did not know how much staff, time and preparation are required for press briefings and WH statements. It also illustrates the evolution of the press , as well as, the differences in press coverage from Democrat to Republican administration. Whether you approve of Trump or not, this is a book worth reading. Written with honesty and humbleness. It candidly illustrates the campaign of a private citizen with little political experience transitioning into the White House. I am very pleased I bought it
- Reviewed in the United States on August 4, 2018Very good look at recent history with an insider’s view. It was an interesting read. He needs to be a regular commentator or columnist.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 18, 2024The Briefing: The Politics, The Press and The President by Sean Spicer covers the author's early upbringing, his career life that indirectly influenced what he eventually did both before 2016 and afterwards, how he met his wife Rebecca Miller, his career with the United States Navy Reserve, some of the reasons why he believes the way he does politically, details of political campaigns Spicer was involved in prior to 2016, parts of his life when he eventually became more interested in politics and more. I am rationally/logically aware that I am very much outside the intended target demographic of The Briefing (due to my personal and professional background and my personal politics). However I have to credit some college instructors who taught me multiple years ago to more rationally understand why it is important to keep my mind receptive to other points of political andor life views that may differ from my own. I came away much more informed than I originally expected to for instance with the author's references implying why how a politician polls is not always a gospel guarantee of certain victory, some of the additional factors that indirectly influence a voter's preference for a politician, some of the reasons why the author preferred to support who he did politically and more. I had originally obtained a kindlebook version of The Briefing on Amazon around July 23, 2018, the hardback book version via Amazon June 28. 2024 before recently obtaining the audio version of The Briefing.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 12, 2018The book starts off with Sean's background which is instrumental in knowing the man. He discusses his religious upbringing, his family, his love of politics, and the intricacies of balancing them.
This is a excellent overview of the political process from the campaign to the election. He is pragmatic in his book and he chose to take the high road when writing about several situations and people. He had a tough job as Press Secretary and he had a tougher job dealing with the MSM who, after almost two years, are still complaining about the election.
It's worth the time to read it. Put more value in the reviews that are a verified purchase.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 27, 2018I hoped that this book would provide a better insight into the operations of the current west wing. Actually was a tale of a former participant defending his point of view and giving little understanding of who directed him and why he was such a staunch defender of 45.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 18, 2019Once I got started I couldn't put this book down. Sean Spicer is very good at holding the attention of the reader. It takes a special kind of personality to work in the never ending ups and downs of life in the White House, plus having to deal with the national press. Mr. Spicer I commend you for your years of hard work, your faith in God, and your love of family. Oh yes, I can't leave out your love of our Country and it's military. Thank you for your service. You will be missed. God bless America, and God bless President Trump.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 1, 2018A refreshing read that one immediately is grabbed by. He really is able to write well and in such a way your not bored. You can tell by the stories and his style he wrote this. Refreshing and lots of good information about Sean Spicer the man and what makes him who he is. I liked this guy from day one but felt he should have been in charge of things away from the camera, because he does not suffer fools. My kind of man. Good Read.

4.0 out of 5 stars An insight into the inner working of the White House from a UK respective
This guy is a good writer but the book tends to run out of steam. He is obviously a devote Christian man but as the book progresses he starts to put his family in second or third place behind the awe inspiring Donald. I suspect that this is his role to work very long hours for his country. He is kind to Donald where in some places the president was not behaving as the head of the free world. (three marriages)? The UK has a lot of room to talk of course, look at Boris Johnson but I would have loved the author to be more decisive. Worth a read.
