About the Author

Heidi Baker founded Iris Ministries with her husband, Rolland. Together they served as missionaries in Indonesia, Hong Kong, and the streets of London before following God’s calling in 1995 to Mozambique. Having faced overwhelming need, the Bakers now watch God provide miraculously for over 7,000 children.  Heidi is the author of Compelled By Love and co-author of Always Enough and Expecting Miracles with her husband.

Heidi’s greatest passion is to live in the manifest presence of God and to carry His glory, presence and love to His body and a lost and dying world. She longs to see others laying their lives down for the sake of the Gospel and coming home to the Father’s love. Rolland and Heidi Baker founded Iris Ministries, now Iris Global, in 1980. In 1995, they were called to the poorest country in the world at the time, Mozambique, and faced an extreme test of the Gospel. They began by pouring out their lives among abandoned street children, and as the Holy Spirit moved miraculously in many ways, a revival movement spread to adults, pastors, churches and then throughout the villages all across Mozambique’s ten provinces. Heidi is now “Mama Aida” to thousands of people, and oversees a broad holistic ministry that includes a university, Bible schools, medical clinics, church-based orphan care, well drilling, food aid, primary and secondary schools, farms, widow’s programs, and outreaches that include a network of thousands of churches and prayer houses. She earned her BA and MA degrees from S.C.C., Vanguard University and her PhD from Kings College, University of London. Heidi is calling for a passionate tribe of true believers in Jesus who will pour out their lives for love’s sake, empowered by the Holy Spirit to bring people of all ages home to the Father’s embrace!

She has BA, MA from Vanguard University and her PhD from Kings College (University of London). A documentary film called Compelled by Love: The Film premeires January 5th, 2014 which features the life story of Rolland and Heidi Baker, narrated by Reinhard Bonnke.

The parallel is fitting. Both stories are intensely personal for those involved and tell of great humility, obedience, and sacrifice as women of great faith and favor surrendered to the call of God and the work of the Spirit in their lives. Both stories contain valuable principles for our lives and ministries, and both stories tell of miracles that touched the whole world.

    Heidi Baker uses her own life to illustrate the principles that have rooted and sustained the movement catalyzed by Iris Global. The book effortlessly moves from biographical sketches to passionate calls for intimacy with the Father. The core of the book is a call to abide in Christ from John 15. Heidi Baker convinces us with story after story, and paragraph after paragraph that the only way to bear fruit is to stay connected to Jesus. Intimacy with God is the open secret. It's something we all nod our heads to, but it's something that the Bakers have fought for and proven with their lives.

    Birthing the Miraculous is a life-changing book. The stories are unforgettable as is the example of the Bakers and what God is doing through their ministry to the poorest of the world. But beyond the stories and testimonies there is something more to this book. There is that almost tangible presence of God in these words. Words string together into sentences and sentences into paragraphs, but there is something so much deeper than well written prose and well-articulated passion. It's not the writing itself, but the Spirit within the author who has inspired the words. The presence of God leaks off these pages, whispering behind the words and drawing us closer and closer to Jesus. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. I cherish every one of Heidi Baker's books, and of all of them, this one is perhaps the most complete, and the most articulate. This book comes from one of the giants of our generation, one of whom the world is not worthy. May we follow her as she follows Christ.

    Laid-down lover is the best verb ever! Heidi speaks about what it means to go-low and give your everything for King Jesus in a simple, yet profound way. If you want to walk into your destiny and see the Glory of God, I would highly recommend this book. She speaks of Gods power and love so beautifully. He passion and zeal for Jesus makes me long for my own intimacy with Him to go even deeper and to live a surrendered life for Him alone. I wept many times reading through her stories of Mozambique, it only made me want Jesus more. Once you've tasted Him, there's really nothing else that satisfies- not ONE thing. The day I finished reading this book, God gave me the name of a Continent during the middle of the night. It's no nation and very broad but I believe that as I continue to go to those secret places, he will reveal more and more and eventually give me a Nation!! Even if you aren't relentless in finding Jesus, still read this book. The stories of Heidi and Gods miraculous works of healing, feeding and love in her life are worth your time!

    I recently attended a conference where Heidi and Rolland Baker were the (only) speakers. It was unusual (!) but also wonderful so I was motivated to read her latest book. It's an easy read with lots of personal stories of her life in Mozambique and how she comes to be there. But, as the title suggests, it's much more than an autobiography; it's an inspiring challenge to live the life you've always wanted and an practical guide as to how to do that. But it's no quick fix!

    I love the way the Kindle lets you highlight text and then find the highlights again and on some pages I wanted to highlight everything! Suffice it to say that her approach to life, well-supported by Bible references, is revolutionary in the same way Jesus' was. Her absolute and humble devotion to Jesus shines new light on His instruction in John 15 to "abide in me" and in this book we can see the "much fruit" that follows. But, as Heidi stresses, the "fruit" is almost incidental (though very welcome!) the main goal is to live a life of love for Jesus and let Him do what he wants with that. It's the life of what she calls the "laid down lover".

    While reading this book you may laugh and you may weep, but when you finish it you will never be the same again. Be prepared to have your life turned upside down!

    I read a lot of books and this is one was a sheer joy and pleasure to read. I would call it a "favorite" and once I began, I read all day long until I finished it. It helped that I was sick and in bed and had a bit of time! :) Heidi has a very disarming, loving, exciting way of communicating!

    Her testimonies, for me, were completely inspiring. She leads a faith-rich life filled with experiences that make you only want to hear more. Her relationship with Jesus and her testimony of His leading her life drew me completely in and fueled the flame of faith in my heart all the more. Her experiences are much like the early church; healings, miracles, and many coming to faith as they go out sharing the gospel.

    What she experiences is what all believers can experience; A life lead of God! She encourages fellow pilgrims to draw into the secret place of prayer and communion with Jesus. It was a word for today! A must read, in my opinion. Great job, Heidi. Thank you for sharing your life and testimony. It has truly made a difference for me and I plan to re-read your book shortly.

    This is a wonderfully practical exploration of what it means to believe promises and dreams God has given to you for your life and carry them from seed to planting and fruitfulness.

    Chapter by chapter Heidi takes us on a journey with Mary, from receiving the promise of a Son to carrying him to full term. Along the way she draws insightful comparisons with our own journeys of believing and pursuing God's promises - but it's not presented as a sweet, glory-soaked victory lap. Heidi doesn't shy away from the hard topics of rejection, delay or disappointment, but helps us see the way forward by way of Mary's example, as well as plenty of crazy examples from her own experience (which she shares with a brilliant sense of humour and metaphorical twinkle in the eye).
