Product Description

Christmas Oranges, starring: Edward Herrmann, Nancy Stafford, Bailee Johnson.
Christmas is a Time of Miracles
In a town not so far away and a time not so long ago, baby Rose was left at Greenwoods Orphanage, where Mrs. Hartley (Nancy Stafford) and the children under her care become the young child's family. But when tragedy strikes, Rose (Bailee Johnson) loses the only home she has ever known and is abruptly shipped to Irongates a place that seems as cold and cruel as her previous home was kind. The strict headmaster, Mr. Crampton (Edward Herrmann), immediately seems to dislike Rose and makes sure all children are punished for any infraction of his rules. When she learns that every Christmas Mr. Crampton's generous brother gives an orange to each child, Rose waits in eager anticipation. She's certain it must be the most delicious treat in the world. However, on Christmas morning, Rose is devastated when she learns Mr. Crampton is punishing her again. But Christmas is a time of miracles. Share a slice of Christmas sweetened with friendship in this poignant Christmas story based on a classic holiday tale.

I wasn’t able to receive this movie until 2025 but watching it for the first time after Christmas made it all the better. It was released in 2012 but I had not heard of it. I haven’t bought a new Christmas movie in quite a few years and I don’t remember every year to check for new ones due to the disappointment in what I find. I sure was rewarded this past Christmas after several hours of deciding to look again. What a marvelous movie the whole family can enjoy. The movie is very moving and brought great joy to my heart even though there is sadness with the joy, just as with the true meaning of Christmas.

As a movie reviewer on a quest to find wholesome family entertainment, I’m always thrilled to find a heartwarming movie that I hadn’t heard much about and discover a gem in the process.

Such is the case with Christmas Oranges.

Rose was abandoned as a baby on the steps of Greenwoods Orphanage. The motherly caretaker, widow Mrs. Hartley, takes Rose in to the orphanage and raises her, along with the other children of the orphanage, as if they were her own. The children enjoy a loving environment and all is well until the unspeakable happens.

Rose is then transferred to Irongates Orphanage, a place opposite in every way from the Greenwoods Orphanage. Under cruel Mr. Crampton’s direction, the children at Irongates are under strict rule with no love and very little attention.

Rose is immediately grateful for the new friends she finds at Irongates, as well as, Mr. Crampton’s kind brother Joe, and Polly, the cook. She hears of the stories of what happens on Christmas – the only day Mr. Crampton allows the children to have any fun. It’s on that special day that Joe brings each child an orange – oranges he has hung on the Christmas tree on Christmas Eve. Rose finds it difficult to wait for Christmas Day.

Along the way, Rose encounters difficulties at every turn with Mr. Crampton. When she discovers he harbors a secret, will her gentle spirit sway him to realize the mistakes he’s made and that it’s never too late to start anew?

Christmas Oranges has quickly become one of my favorite films. Delightful, heartwarming, and humorous in parts, I was thrilled to have stumbled upon it. Christmas Oranges is not a Christian film, but it does have some wonderful lessons for discussion. For example: love despite biological ties, loyalty, friendship, forgiveness, grace, and serving others. There is nothing objectionable in this movie.

But I will give you one word of caution: you may need a Kleenex. I know I did.

I highly recommended this movie for all ages for Christmas and for any time of the year.

Kind of slow and sappy at the start, but my husband and I ended up liking the movie. I loaned it to a friend with a husband, young adult daughter, and 12 year old son, and no one in their family liked it. It's kind of an old fashioned movie, no explosions or cussing. Maybe that's why they didn't like it...

This is not a happy movie, but it is a very good movie. If you're looking for a simple, pleasant story, you may wish to look elsewhere. If you're in the mood for a down-on-their-luck story with a good deal of sadness along the way, this is an excellent candidate for the job.

It is the story of orphans; Rose was dropped off by her mother as a baby and the story is told mostly through her. Her first orphanage was not that bad: the woman running it loved children and certainly all those in her care. But when she dies in the great flu epidemic at the end of World War I, things don't go so well anymore.

Rose is moved to another orphanage, one run by a man (Edward Herrmann) who is a taskmaster, one determined to punish all rule-breakers. At first it is not clear why he does this, but despite the punishments, Rose manages to get on with most of ther fellow orphans. And the headmaster's brother ia a very nice guy.

The story is one of changing one's ways, of learning how to be kinder and, in that sense, it is an excellent movie -- the story pulls no punches, Rose has to earn her way, win over those who are not so nice.

The acting is superb and Bailee Johnson, who plays Rose, is superb. A story so complex demands as much and they are one and all up to the job.

It is well worth the watching.

This is a well down movie. Edward Herrmann stars as a bitter, authoritarian man that runs an orphanage. A new girl comes and changes everything.

5.0 out of 5 stars How can a grinch grow a new heart?
Reviewed in Canada on December 20, 2020
Do you remember what it was like to find that giant navel orange in the toe of your stocking on Christmas morning? Traditions have changed throughout the decades, but these big oranges arriving at Christmastime are still special. To a young girl named Rose, newly arrived at the Iron Gates Orphanage, this will be her first experience with the Christmas Oranges. She has led a sheltered life since being dropped off at her former orphanage as an infant in a basket. Her benevolent and loving matriarch taught her to be a good caretaker of her "siblings" while enjoying the simple pleasures of childhood. We are told about food shortages as there is a war on, but which war? This is followed awhile later by a terrible, virulent and deadly flu. This indeed was the Great Influenza Pandemic of 1919, which sadly took many of the youngest children as well as the matriarch, forcing closure and redistribution of the remaining orphans. Rose is initially tormented by resident hazers, but quickly assembles a support group that recognizes her courage and leadership, as well as her ability to sing "like an angel". Her special gifts are recognized by the gruff Headmaster's congenial brother, who hopes to instill some Christmas spirit into his grinchy brother's hardened heart. One misadventure follows another, leading to Rose's exclusion from her share in the treasured Christmas Oranges. This has a strange effect on the other children, with everyone coming together in a tremendous gesture of love, goodwill and sharing that leaves this grinch's meanness undone. Then, we get the rest of the story, of an estranged yet reconciliation-minded daughter who wants her aggrieved and desperate father to come home for Christmas, bringing great relief and happiness to all. Happy Christmas!

I didn’t realize that this was just still shots of storybook pages being read aloud. Cute story but not worth what I paid for a dvd. I’d rather have a book. I personally wouldn’t recommend this purchase.
