- Reviewed in the United States on May 14, 2013Drawing upon his recently delivered Didsbury Lectures and his postgraduate teaching, Tom Noble provides a lively, clear and balanced review of the Christian Doctrine of heart holiness, also called entire sanctification, and Christian perfecting. From a broad historical review, through John Wesley's understanding and with fresh applicability in the contemporary context, this is sure to be a landmark book for Wesleyans and Christians in the American Holiness traditions, as well as a valuable resources for seminarians.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 19, 2014This is a major work that clearly represents Wesley's pastoral theology accurately and puts it in the context of Scripture, Experience, Reason and Tradition. Moreover, it breaks new ground in Wesleyan studies regarding the primary foundation of the Holy Trinity as the ultimate essential truth in expressing the nature of the life of a christian being perfected in love.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 16, 2025Dr. Noble has a keen and articulate grasp on biblical holiness from a Trinitarian perspective.
All Wesleyans may learn more about our Triune Holy God who is in loving relationship with us and us to Him. I especially like his writing on how sanctification relates to Christ's incarnation, His living and His crucification. The best outcome for human nature in Christ is a complete sanctified heart and life.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 18, 2013It was at least twenty ago that I gave up thinking the English word "perfection" was useful for church theology. Noble offers a rich, balanced, biblical, historical, and reasonable doctrine of Christian perfecting.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 18, 2014Noble looks at biblical holiness from a biblical standpoint and not just what we "think" holiness should be or is. Can we let the Word of God be the ultimate answer to our search for a Holy God who calls us to be a holy people? WE MUST!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 23, 2013So much of popular christian theology is a mile wide but only an inch deep. Dr. Noble's treatment of Christian Perfection as related to the Holy Trinity is a deep treatment of an often misunderstood biblical concept. I appreciate his ability to both clear up the misconceptions of Christian Perfection while anchoring the doctrine soundly in the heart of Christian Theology - the Triune God.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 2, 2015Organized around a clear focus (the title says it well), this book ranges widely, making good use of sources from Eastern and Western Christianity and from the Patristic to Modern periods. Professor Noble makes important distinctions along the way to show how the Wesleys (John and Charles) drew deeply from the Tradition in developing a pastoral theology of holiness. I appreciate the author's insights into some of the mistakes the heirs of the Wesleys in the holiness tradition made. Most importantly, this book exemplifies how careful theological reflection is eminently practical and life-giving.
Because of the scope, a reader with no background in historical theology might find this book a bit frustrating or intimidating. Even though the author gives clear explanations, he has to assume the reader brings knowledge of vocabulary, basic terms and at least cursory knowledge about the theologians he deploys. This book is not for beginners.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 20, 2014The author provides a thorough review of this cardinal doctrine for our understanding of the Christian life. Noble provides a strong articulation of this doctrine within the framework of the doctrine of Holy Trinity, and does it masterfully taking into consideration Biblical and Historical perspectives.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good study on holiness
A good study on the topic of holiness from Noble. He opens up some good dialogue for those of us serious to understand more.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Significant Contribution
Tom Noble's book is a significant contribution to scholarship, perhaps not just by making explicit the trinitarian grounding of John Wesley's concern for holiness but also by illustrating that Wesleyanism has a strong dogmatic heart, rooted in Scripture and the Early Church Fathers.
Personally I would have liked to have seen a greater attempt to engage this Trinitarian framework of the Wesleyan enunciation of holiness with key questions raised by figures such as W. E. Sangster, John Vincent, even Albert Outler, particularly concerning sin and human nature.
However, within its tight and narrow method, this is an excellent study.
