Sister Wendy on the Art of Christmas Paperback – September 3, 2013
Purchase options and add-ons
It features fifteen pieces of art relating to the topic of Christmas, with an extended reflection on each piece. The commentary is meditative, more reflection on the spiritual nature of the paintings’ subject than art critique. Sister Wendy writes with the deft hand of one who is formed in spirituality, art, and critical thinking. Her imagery is lush, creating a landscape where the sacred and profane live in comfortable coexistence through the medium of painting. For spiritual seekers and lovers of art, this book will offer a unique journey into the experiential nature of a well-rounded faith.

About the Author
Beckett entered the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur in 1946 and graduated from Oxford University in 1953, but in 1970, she obtained papal permission to leave her congregation and become a consecrated virgin. Her former congregation arranged for her to live under the protection of the Carmelite nuns at their monastery at Quidenham, Norfolk, in the east of England. There she leads a contemplative lifestyle, dedicating her life solely to solitude and prayer, but allotting two hours of work per day to earn her living.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 12, 2024Sister Wendy never disappoints. The great thing is how she points out things that are right in front you you but you never noticed. One example, the painting on the cover. Jesus is touching the hand of the king... in the presence of all their finery and costly presents, it is Jesus who gives. Treat yourself and get this book for yourself or for someone you love. Peace.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 29, 2014N ot only did Sister Wendy choose beautiful, inspiring and thought provoking art for this book, but her idea of what the artist was trying to portray at times floored me. I found myself thinking "My goodness, where did she get that from?" And then I thought it comes from her personal intelligence, her life long dedication to spiritual growth and knowledge and a soul unfettered by worldly attachments. Each piece of art features 3 pages of commentary. Very few writers could say so much in so few words. She is truly a treasure.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 4, 2015Love Sister Wendy - She makes art interesting by explaining it on my level. I also loved her DVD on art that came out quite a few years ago.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 1, 2024Not the best layout of pictures or expression of Sister Wendy’s erudite and witty insights.

I have bought this book as a Christmas gift and I think it will be very well received. The recipient is someone who wants to begin to take religion, Christianity more seriously.
Perfect present for someone like that I think because the book looks lovely and Sister Wendy has the right tone for the person I have in mind. One Christmas gift done. Hooray!

5.0 out of 5 stars How great thou art!
This book beautifully captures the meaning and message of Christmas through Christian Art.
It is more warming to the spirit than mulled wine and mince pies.
So sit back with a cup of tea or something stronger and enjoy!
I will definitely be getting copies to give as presents.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great little book...
Great little book. Possibly smaller (fewer pages) than I was expecting, but that will teach me to read product descriptions better. Excellent addition to the bookcase along with the other Sister Wendy books.

4.0 out of 5 stars Thought-provoking illustrations of the accounts of Mary, Jesus's birth and the nativity
As a gift. The content gives a different and earlier perspective of the nativity events to the more familiar renaissance depictions. Helps one consider anew the Biblical accounts.
