-- Dr. Shirley Madhere ― Founder, Holistic Plastic Surgery and Creator, Forever F.A.B Podcast
Discover one of the most surprising secrets to keeping skin healthy, radiant, and clear--the body's bacterial microbiome. Most of us spend years trying to get rid of nasty bacteria with cleansers, masks, and medicines, but it turns out our skin has a finely balanced microbiome that is crucial to maintaining good skin.
Written by holistic expert Paula Simpson, Good Bacteria for Healthy Skin teaches readers how lifestyle affects the skin microbiome, how microbiome imbalances impact skin conditions, and the benefits of probiotics and prebiotics. Simpson's expertise is perfect for those looking to discover professional secrets and the science behind achieving and maintaining perfect skin. -- ASCP ― Skin Deep Magazine
We are currently living through an exciting new scientific era that focuses on the microbiome. While voluminous research has been done on the gut microbiome, Paula Simpson has pulled back the curtains to reveal the secret life of our skin microbiome.
In her book Paula reveals many astonishing facts about the microbial terrain of our body’s largest organ and how it affects everything from acne, hydration, skin barrier function, immune function and more. The book also highlights the crosstalk between the gut microbiome and the skin microbiome- truly our bodies are holistic and we can no longer think about certain parts as separate. Paula recommends an integrative approach to keeping our skin biome healthy and provides the steps and delicious and healthy recipes necessary to guide us along the way.
I highly recommend this ground breaking book if you are interested in learning in depth about your skin’s biome and having the healthiest skin of your life! -- Dr. Anne Marie Fine, N.M.D. ― Bestselling Author of Cracking the Beauty Code
Probiotics can be confusing. Paula Simpson presents the subject in an easy-to-understand way that finally makes sense! -- Liz Ritter, Executive Editor, ― New Beauty Magazine
Microbiome, probiotics and prebiotics seem to be pretty buzzy words these days. Finally an easy to read book that breaks it all down! Paula’s book is written so engagingly that you don’t need an advanced degree in biochemistry to enjoy it.
Finally, I understand the difference between pre-biotics and pro-biotics and why each is so important to healthy, glowing skin. I’ve long been a fan of the big-picture when it comes to skin health and while microbiome, pro and pre-biotics may be having a real moment, I think that this isn’t a trend. It’s just good information that’s easy to implement. I especially enjoyed the chapters on nutrition because I’m also a firm believer that a healthy gut = healthy skin. Bonus: skin-friendly and microbiome-friendly recipes included! -- Kari Gran, Co-Founder ― Kari Gran® Skin Care
“I would recommend this book for anyone looking to improve their skin without spending a fortune on the wrong products. Understanding more about your skin is the key to getting better results……bacteria is key to a healthy gut and the same applies to your skin. This book is a terrific guide to understanding what works."

- Reviewed in the United States on September 22, 2019Good Bacteria came at the exact right time for me. I have been reading much contradictory information about germs in the human body and in our environment. I see hand sanitizers at the gym and all over my daughter’s elementary school. Is our fear of germs gotten out of hand? Clearly, I need some quality information and this book is science based, while also easy to read and understand. The author is a biochemist and a nutritionist so she draws on other experts for her references.
One of my favorite things about this book is the author provides summary statements for each chapter making it easy to return and get the facts that may have been missed. If you are wondering what probiotic foods are and how they affect your health- this book is for you. If you have questions about diet and what foods affect your body the most- this book is for you.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 2, 2019I have been having so much fun reading and learning from this book! I'm a big fan of learning about how microbiomes work, and I bought this because I'd been struggling with skin problems. I had just been trying to use expensive products and information I found on the internet, but hadn't been seeing results. This book has been great because I've been able to use the knowledge to change my diet, and my redness and acne have started to die down. The best part of this book is the recipes. There are face masks and smoothies, broths and general meals. Some are more complex than others, but you can definitely find something that you're able to make easily! And unlike many health books, the ingredients can be found anywhere
- Reviewed in the United States on November 8, 2019Thorough. Good bacteria for healthy skin was something I looked into because I know its a budding new skincare option. What I really wanted to know was if topical had a point to it or if you had to eat bacteria to balance yourself/skin out. Turns out, yes? Maybe? The author seems comfortable only in saying that it has been claimed to help but not proven and it's up to you to do your research. Um, ok I thought I was. So my take away is, don’t snub your co-scientists by saying NO, but there are people contesting its viability because probiotics need to live and can they in a skin cream, so stick with what is proven, i.e. eating a diet rich in nutrients and probiotics. The mediterranean diet was touted as very beneficial, but everyone says that for everything. I haven’t gotten into the nitty gritty of it (aka didn't make recipes in the back) but it seems to be that the author is saying there are different ways to get probiotics into your diet easily and some strains do different things so pay attention and don’t just willy-nilly eat something because the label says probiotics- it might not be what you want or need for your particular concern.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 27, 2019Learning what is and is not good for my skin is a process I've been trying (and then avoiding) for so many years. What I really like about this book is how easy it is to understand for someone with very little biology knowledge. Not only does "Good Bacteria for Health Skin" give you the quick and dirty on different microbes living in your body, it also connects those microbes to your skin. From tips on how to combat stress with your diet to the impact your environment has on your skin, this book covers all the bases. It even gives brief descriptions of different types of skin ailments, and discusses everything you need to know about probiotics and how to use them in your skin care and diet.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 2, 2021This is a great read for anyone who may be struggling with skin issues or if you just want to learn more about how to support a healthy micro biome. Our skin is our largest organ and to treat the skin you must look deeper into what you put into/ expose your body to. Paula’s expertise is evident in this book and it is one you will go back to refer to over and over again! An enjoyable and very informative read!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 28, 2023I am a Licensed Esthetician and YES! Amazing read and great for continuing education.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 12, 2021Helps me in my skincare practice to have a better understanding of the skin.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 6, 2020Goes over how useful the current thought on probiotics but does not go into any real detail as it relates to your skin. Read something on the internet instead. You are likely to find research papers that give details.
