About the author
Inspired by the writings of small-scale organic farmers; such as Wendell Berry, Eliot Coleman, David Kline and Gene Logsdon; Colin has been growing food since the late 1990’s. He developed his unique set of backyard farming skills by working on organic production farms, teaching garden-based environmental education and managing residential landscapes. In addition to the numerous, quantifiable benefits of local food production (better tasting food, reduced carbon emissions, community building), he believes that growing food is a worthy endeavor simply because it makes people happier. When he is not farming, Colin is usually talking about farming and/or drinking beer.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 21, 2020This is by far the best and most informative book on gardening that I have ever read. I'd go as far to say that this is the only book you will ever really need on the subject as it covers pretty much all you would need to know. It gives great information on how to plan your garden layout, what to plant and when, disease control, charts, how to get the highest yield from your crop, helps you figure out what size garden will suit your needs and so much more. Like I said, very informative and easy to understand, would suit both a beginner and senior gardener.
My only complaint about this book is the binding. I knew it was spiral bound when I bought it and was fine with it, but the spirals are covered and it makes this book hard to close as the pages get caught. I don't think this part of the binding will last long either. With that being said, I would not hesitate to buy this again or recommend it!

Images in this review - Reviewed in the United States on October 17, 2017This book, along with their companion book "Food Grown Right, IN Your Backyard," are absolutely hands down the best books on vegetable gardening I've ever read--and I have several. I assure anyone that these two books are all you ever need, to begin, continue, and increase your skills and value. There is no guessing--they provide all the measures, measurements, pros and cons leaving you confident as you begin. Lots of great detail without being overwhelmed with great illustrations and pictures. If I were to teach a class on gardening, these are all the books I'd use. While I'm at it, let me recommend their podcast "Encyclopedia Botanica" which is definitely the best podcast on gardening I've heard. Most of their material come from their vast experiences and their books. In case anyone is wondering--this review is totally independent and I don't know these folks at all. I just have to give credit where it is due.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 17, 2016I am enjoying it. Easy to pick up and put down, reading a little at a time. I have read or watched some of this approach before and glad to have this as a reference. I appreciate that it accounts for growing our own compost material. I personally would prefer to have quality animal manures. but i do not. Neither far that matter do I have sufficient space to grow grains for compost. That said, i am finding little places to a put a bit of amaranth here and there as plants are harvested. The information is detailed enough to make it adaptable to different situations. Good quality, binding, and very nice color pictures for illustration.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 23, 2018I have been gardening for years and absolutely enjoy this book. the spiral binding alone makes it easy to use and keep open to the page I want at the time. Even though I am an avid grander/rancher and I've been doing companion planting and other methods over the years this book is well planned out and provides much information. I partially purchased it because at some point my kids will want to ranch/farm, & garden and this will be invaluable to them.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 11, 2020I can find gardening books all day long but they really don't answer how to feed me at my pace. Most books tell you plant this crop now and you plant all of that plant then. The result is that you get 67 turnips all in the same week. I don't know about you but I would really like to eat my turnips spaced out. This is true for all of my crops. I am always disappointed that I get a week or two of more than I want of a vegetable, I give a lot a way and I spend the rest of the year wishing I had more.
This book lays out a plan to stagger your planting so that you can have crops maturing at the rate you want to eat them (or preserve them). It offers work pages that you can record data specific to your area and if you go online they offer the sheets digitally. If I could give this book more than 5 stars I would. It takes my beginner gardening to the next level.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 22, 2018I finally grew tired of checking and re-checking this book out; I wanted a copy to mark up for myself. The presentation is simple and very straightforward, and they include examples of gardening goals and what each looks like for the small urban farmer up to the person with acreage to have a "u-pick" business. If I had a complaint, it would be that there are no colorful garden pics, but of course, those would increase the price.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 17, 2020This book has been amazing and eye-opening for me, and is extremely thorough and practical. Every detail regarding vegetable gardening is addressed and covered, with plenty of tables and worksheets for quick reference. I highly recommend it to gardeners of all levels that want to "step up" their veggie game!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 10, 2021This book is extraordinarily well done. With all the information out there on the web it is easy to get lost in planning a vegetable garden, especially if you are like me an led relatively new to it all. This book grounds you and takes you one step at a time through the planning, implementation and care of your garden. It isn’t over simplified and does require some thinking on the gardener’s part. But if you are like I was and so overwhelmed with information, this book will put you firmly on step one and lead you through harvest.

5.0 out of 5 stars No regrets!
This book is amazing! I’m an experienced gardener and it’s straight to the point so I’m not bored with repeated information, but there are so many nuggets in here! It’s clearly laid out and very easy to read with a variety of useful information all in one spot. They also did their best to make the information applicable from small home growers to larger scale growers too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Detailed food gardening.
Didn't like the 30 cm. tear in the cover. Like the huge base of knowledge on more vegetables than most people are aware of.

5.0 out of 5 stars covers the basics to the advanced for all gardeners
Book starts out with some broad base lines but then gives high level of detail regarding many different vegetable plants.. Great for the first time gardener all the way up to the full scale market gardener who wishes to broaden their knowledge.

2.0 out of 5 stars This book is intended for farmers.. not the average vegetable grower
I purchased this book for a mom who has been gardening for a couple of years now. I thought she would find this interesting, but the book was waaay to detailed and is meant for a farmer with a large location to grow vegetables or fruits.
