Pickett’s Charge at Gettysburg: A Guide to the Most Famous Attack in American History Hardcover – June 19, 2015
After the war, one staff officer perceptively observed that the charge “has been more criticized, and is still less understood, than any other act of the Gettysburg drama.” Unfortunately, what was true then remains true to this day. The authors of this book—two of Gettysburg’s elite Licensed Battlefield Guides—have teamed up with one of the Civil War’s leading cartographers to unravel the mysteries of this attack.
Grounded in the premise that no better resource exists for understanding this unique event than the battlefield itself, Pickett’s Charge at Gettysburg encourages its readers to explore this storied event from a wide variety of perspectives. For the first time, readers can march toward the Copse of Trees with Armistead’s Virginians, advance from the Confederate left with Pettigrew’s North Carolinians, or defend the Angle with Alonzo Cushing’s gunners and thousands of Union soldiers. There is much here to enrich the experience, including dozens of full-color original maps, scores of battlefield and other historic photographs, a unique mix of rare human interest stories, discussions of leadership controversies, a full Order of Battle, and a rare collection of artifacts directly related to the charge.
Pickett’s Charge at Gettysburg is designed for readers to enjoy on or off the battlefield, and will give Civil War enthusiasts an entirely new appreciation for, and understanding of, Gettysburg’s third day of battle.

Civil War News
“Students of the battle will love this thoughtful, balanced, and fascinating exploration of Pickett’s Charge. The authors leave no aspect of this famous attack untouched, and their insightful analysis and vast knowledge of the subject make this a book not to be missed by anyone with an interest in Gettysburg.”
D. Scott Hartwig, former Chief Historian for Gettysburg National Military Park, and the author of To Antietam Creek: The Maryland Campaign of September 1862
“This exciting new tour guide delivers far more than a standard walking tour of the advance of Pickett’s Virginia infantry on the final day of the Battle of Gettysburg. The ‘other half’ of the assaulting force—Pettigrew’s and Trimble’s North Carolinians, Alabamians, Tennesseans, Mississippians, and a few more Virginians—get full coverage. Those interested in the pre-assault artillery bombardment will be delighted by the extensive attention given to that element of the fight. And, finally, General Winfield Scott Hancock’s Union defenders finally receive the detailed examination they always have deserved. Wayne Motts, James Hessler, and Steven Stanley have done a masterful job!”
Carol Reardon, Penn State University, author of A Field Guide to Gettysburg
“The most famous infantry charge in American history finally has an excellent tour guide. Written by a pair of experienced historians and battlefield guides, and designed and mapped by one of the war’s leading cartographers, it has everything a Civil War buff or visitor would want in walking in the footsteps of soldiers on both sides of that afternoon on July 3, 1863.”
Jeffry D. Wert, author of Gettysburg, Day Three

- Reviewed in the United States on July 27, 2022The last thing I thought I needed was to read yet another book on Gettysburg. Spoiler alert - the ending is still the same.
With that said, I really enjoyed this book. Truth be told, the impetus was the fantastic coverage of Gettysburg 159 earlier this month by the American Battlefield Trust. That series got the old interest piqued and being a follower of Mr. Hessler on his podcast and having seen Mr. Motts on numerous videos, I decided to give this book a try
As I said, I really enjoyed this book. It is very well written, organized, and documented. I particularly appreciated the use of the battlefield and its monuments to tell the story. I am even more excited now about my next visit to the battlefield having read this book. Thanks again to Messrs. Hessler and Motts. Nice work.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 3, 2015I first received this publication about 2 weeks ago. I jumped right in with highlighter in hand. This book does not disappoint. It is a thorough history of one of the most famous charges in American History. It definitely raises the bar on future publications. While many well written resources and accounts use the written word, this book is lavishly illustrated along with topographical maps are superb. Written in a style that will allow any reader to visit the field with book in hand and tour the field in a logical and concise manner. Whether a beginner or an expert, you can take your tour at your pace and utilize the book as a personal guide while studying this portion of the field. Personal vignettes of both regimental and individual experiences bring the battle to life 152 years later. I definitely recommend this book for your library if you don't already have it
- Reviewed in the United States on December 12, 2015This book is an excellent new one about Gettysburg focusing on 'Pickett's Charge" or more appropriately Longstreet's Assault. It is basically a tour guide with numbered stops so that you can drive and/or walk the areas of Longstreet's Assault. But it is more than that too. It has compiled in a very organized way a great many new reports, letters and such along with troop strength estimates that I found very interesting. I have been to the battlefield probably 40 times in my life and have been reading Gettysburg and Civil War books since the late 1950's, maybe a hundred or more of them, including the best top 5 for Longstreet's Assault. Yet I found this a welcome new addition to my library. Always new stuff to learn as researchers keep finding and compiling new information.
I had this book in hand this fall at Gettysburg and discovered many new things as I walked the field along the maps guidelines. It really provided a new perspective.
I greatly encourage it's purchase by either the Gettysburg novice or experienced reader.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 13, 2015I just finished James Hessler and Wayne Motts "Pickett's charge at Gettysburg". This is an extremely well researched and written work on Longstreet's July 3 assault. Not only a valuable tool for one walking the field, but simply a great read which is well supported by notes. I have in excess of 100 books devoted to this battle and all of the major titles dealing with the assault, and can say without a doubt this belongs on the shelf of every student of the battle. Very highly recommended for all, including the "experts"! I urge you to buy and read this book. Oh and excellent maps by Steve Stanley
- Reviewed in the United States on December 4, 2021I have read several books that treat "Pickett's charge". But the Hessler book adds numerous maps and photographs, including pictures of important unit monuments(e.g.. 8 OVI), that match the text and narrative. In combination, these assets put the reader on familiar places of the battlefield as the story unfolds. The writing style is comfortable; not the ponderous style that belabors most written history.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 2, 2021Great book by two great Gettysburg Guides and historians. I have walked Pickett's Charge with both authors and they have captured the details in this very readable book! Congratulations on a great contribution.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 26, 2021For avid historians or those with basic interest and awe in how and why that horrific battle truly unfolded, this book is for you. The depth of information is amazing. This books also helps you to visualize the third day at Gettysburg. Just a wonderful presentation on every level.
