Purchase options and add-ons

Though West Virginia was founded for the purpose of remaining loyal to the Union, severing ties with Virginia, home of the capital of the Confederacy, would prove difficult. West Virginia's fate would be tested on its battlegrounds. In August 1863, Union general William Woods Averell led a six-hundred-mile raid culminating in the Battle of White Sulphur Springs in Green Brier County. Colonel George S. Patton, grandfather of the legendary World War II general, met Averell with a dedicated Confederate force. After a fierce two-day battle, Patton defeated Averell, forcing him to retreat and leave West Virginia, and ultimately the Union, in the balance. Civil War historian Eric J. Wittenberg presents a fascinating in-depth analysis of the proceedings in the first book-length study of this important battle.

Mr. Whittenberg should be commended for this work. He took a battle that very few Civil War enthusiasts would be familiar with and he presented the material in a very easy to comprehend manner. He does a great job of explaining the topography of the battlefield since it has unfortunately not been preserved. The highlights of this book is learning more about the first George Patton and a German Baron who is fighting in a war a world away from his homeland.

Very interesting account of a small battle featuring Confederate Infantry blunting an 1863 Union cavalry raid in West Virginia. Confederate forces were commanded by George Patton's grandfather.

Eric Wittenberg's telling of the battle at White Sulpher Springs is another one of his excellent accounts of the "small" engagements that took place throughout the country during the Civil War. It is easy to concentrate on the big war and forget all the fighting that went on in the small places. Mr. Wittemberg brings this little picture into focus.

Excellent piece of Civil War history. Especially interesting if you are a West Virginian. The areas of the battles is in some of the most beautiful parts of WV.
