- Reviewed in the United States on October 4, 2017As a Certified Base SAS Programmer studying for the Advanced Programmer certification, this book has been a terrific resource, providing ideas I'd never have thought of as well as explanations of why SAS behaves a particular way. It is NOT a textbook - instead, in the author's words, it's "a very eclectic collection of ideas and tips." Eclectic but exhaustively referenced. Between a table of contents that's over 10 pages long and an Index that's more than 20 pages, it's easy to find info on the topic you're looking for. My favorite tactic has been to flip randomly to any page, read through that section, and try to apply it. To sum up, if you spend a lot of time in SAS, you'll appreciate this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 2, 2013Extensive documentation, but sometimes a little difficult to understand, I think this book is intended for SAS users that have already some background in programing, first I'd recommend the read the Little SAS Book, the code snippets look clear contray to the Little SAS book, but it is excellent 'cause gives a lot of ideas to apply in your everyday work.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 19, 2016Excellent set of techniques which are clearly written, well organized and filled with plenty of examples and code. Very helpful in increasing knowledge and skills with SAS.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 3, 2012I've been programming in SAS over 10 years - so I love it when I can pick up a book and learn some new techniques. I just got this book yesterday and already I've picked up some notes about some of the finer points on PROC SORT (that tricky DUP option!)
Some of the information I was aware of - however I think someone with a little SAS programming experience will find this book useful. I skimmed the book and learned 2-3 functions (WHICHN, hash tables) I was unaware of.
Art has an easy to read and understand style and I probably I would never have learned Proc Report's finer points without his earlier book and SAS Global Forum Papers.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 23, 2012I have seen him present at WUSS. I have attended his classes and presentations including one recently for free on the SAS website. I read all his papers. I believe he has the seminal book on the Macro Facility. Art Carpenter is probably the best single source, other than the Institute itself, to present excellent and exhaustive material on technical topics. He might be good for beginners attempting to get to the next level (e.g. mastering macros) but his advanced material will define what it means to be a senior programmer. Frankly, unless you have been programming since v5 and thus learned everything already, I think you need this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 6, 2013Now my collection of Art's book is complete. Art's most recent book is full of practical tips used across all industries. As an experienced SAS programmer in the pharmaceutical industry for close to 20 years now, I recognized some very `innovative' techniques that have worked well for me to solve challenging SAS programming tasks. I highly recommend this book for all levels of SAS programmers to really take advantage of cleaver SAS programming techniques.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 7, 2013This is an incredibly useful book. It's organized by problems to solve, which makes it a fun read. Although it is generally understandable for all levels, it also offers ideas that even an experienced programmers will find novel.

5.0 out of 5 stars I just love it
I was a bit surprised when the book arrived because of it’s size. But that’s justified ;-)
Seriously, it’s amazing. Very good explanations, makes for good reading, too. I’m a beginner/intermediate SAS user and it’s perfect for me.
