Editorial Reviews
Review
“Sensational Succulents, a new coloring book from the queen of succulents Debra Lee Baldwin and illustrated by Laura Serra, has 75 images from Debra's books that have been transformed into line drawings, ready for you to color. The paper is thick, and unlike many coloring books which have so many lines that it's hard to do anything freehand, the outlines of the succulents give just enough room for us to take some artistic license in shading.” —North Coast Journal
“Fun mandalas made up of plants, and hours of restorative, creative fun.”—San Diego Family Fun Magazine
From the Back Cover
Real succulents offer a kaleidoscope of hues, vivid colors like chartreuse, lavender, teal, and orange. Famed succulent expert Debra Lee Baldwin has gathered her favorite plants in this ready-to-color showcase—just add pens and pencils to grow your own sensational coloring garden!
About the Author
Debra Lee Baldwin, an award-winning photojournalist, is widely hailed as the “Queen of Succulents.” She helped launched the gardening world’s interest in succulents with her first book, Designing with Succulents, and with her two other books Succulent Container Gardens and Succulents Simplified. Baldwin’s own half-acre garden has been featured in Better Homes and Gardens, Sunset, San Diego Home and Garden, and other publications.
The child of Sardinian immigrants, Laura Serra was raised in a small German town at the border of France. She began drawing at the age of two and never stopped. Her work has always been influenced by two seemingly unrelated subjects: typography and portraiture. With pencil, paint, ink, thread, pixels, markers, and coffee, Laura explores the relationships between characters and curves, letters and faces. See more of her work at lauraserra.org.

About the authors
Debra Lee Baldwin specializes in showing how top floral, landscape and garden designers use dynamic, sculptural succulents in a wide variety of eye-catching applications.
Her own garden, featured in Sunset and Better Homes & Gardens, is in the foothills northeast of San Diego, where temps range from below freezing to upwards of 100 degrees.
Succulents, Debra explains, “are plants that drink responsibly. They store water in fleshy leaves and stems to survive dry spells, like when you forget to water them. They’re a terrific option for good-looking, low-maintenance landscapes and containers.”
Debra, a garden photojournalist, got her start writing about homes, gardens, architecture and interior design for the San Diego Union-Tribune, then went on to scout, write and shoot for major magazines. In 2005, her editor at Sunset suggested she do a book on succulents. “That changed my life,” Debra says.
Her first gardening book, Designing with Succulents (Timber Press, 2007) is credited with launching worldwide interest in succulent plants. The second edition of Designing with Succulents (Timber Press, 2017) is “basically a brand new book,” Baldwin says. “It had to be. An awful lot has happened in the world of succulents and design since the title’s initial release.” Illustrated with 400 photos---100 more than the first edition---it encapsulates the essentials of the original along with a decade’s worth of appealing and innovative ideas.
Succulent Container Gardens (Timber Press, 2010), also a bestseller, makes it possible for anyone, anywhere, to grow whatever succulents they like. "Succulents are shallow-rooted and thrive in containers," Debra says. "Simply move and shelter them when the weather turns too cold, hot or wet."
Her third top-seller, Succulents Simplified: Growing, Designing and Crafting with 100 Easy-Care Varieties (Timber Press, 2013), introduces the best succulents for gardens and containers, explains how to grow and use them, and gives step-by-step methods for design-oriented projects. “Succulents Simplified is a guide for novice enthusiasts, a quick reference for anyone seeking a good overview, and a vehicle for design ideas I’m excited about,” Debra says.
In 2017, Debra was honored as "Horticulturist of the Year" by the San Diego Horticultural Society. Around the same time, her YouTube views soared past 3,000,000. In addition to books and videos, Debra shares her photos and expertise via articles, blog posts, newsletters, a 7-lesson Craftsy class, and on her website (www.debraleebaldwin.com). She is an in-demand speaker on the horticultural circuit and keeps in daily contact with succulent enthusiasts worldwide via email and Facebook.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 6, 2016WOW! What a delightful coloring book. The pictures are the perfect size (not overwhelming) and each one is unique. I love that I can leave them in the book as a keepsake or use a straight edge such as a ruler and zip one out to display! So versatile. I am so happy with it I am going to purchase several more as gifts.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 3, 2016I can't imagine a better coloring book to start coloring again! It is absolutely lovely, each picture perfectly detailed. She, Debra Lee Baldwin even has a website where you can look at photos of the actual plants that inspired the illustrations, as a color focused person, that was an amazing discovery. Don't delay in getting yourself a copy or two!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 29, 2018Great pictures and gave for a gift to my Mom, who is coloroing in it and loves it.
Coloring is soothing and she loves gardening.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 8, 2018Yes, it is a bit smaller then plenty of my other adult coloring books, but it is LOVELY! I am not a bit displeased with it. With some books there are at least a few pages scattered around I don’t care for, but this book I like every page.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 22, 2016Bought it as a gift for my wife the cactus and succulent nut who also happens to be an artist. I'll let her write from here.
I found this book to be very generous in the amount of pages given to exercise your creativity upon. Nice touch that they included the Latin names. This was not an annoyance to me but a help when it came to succulents. No matter how much you love plants, I know very few people who have every name memorized or who can recall what every plant's coloration and texture is supposed to look like. I grow far more cacti than succulents. If you do not know what the plant is supposed to look like color wise you can see a variety of images simply by checking the Latin name. The images will help guide you when you select colors and embark upon your creative endeavor so you can create a realistic picture. If you don't care and just want to 'color' than the images within the book will provide you plenty of opportunity and variety to do just that.
I gave it 4 stars because there was no brief blurb of information or explanation about the plant it's self or about physical characteristics. Then
again it is a coloring book. I'm one of the few people that probably use these for educational as well as relaxing and artistic exercises. Overall
very good and if you like succulents I don't think you will be disappointed if you already know what colors to use or don't mind referring to the computer for visual aids.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 12, 2017I'm the illustrator, what can I say. I worked on the book and it was fun and hard work. So I have a different relationship to this Amazon product.
Since a ton of my friends love coloring books, I use my own book (with a little personalized note), for various occasions as gifts.
Strange enough, it's an ADULT coloring book, but somehow kids get it more often than their parents. I do agree, the paper could be better so also the binding. But it's still good to give as a gift, so I'll keep buying it.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 11, 2016Amazing art! I got it as a present for a friend and wish I had bought two so I could have one.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 8, 2016I love succulents and I love coloring books, so I was really excited to get this. Unfortunately as beautiful as the illustrations inside the book are, this is just not great for coloring. The binding of the book is thick and rigid, which makes it impossible to lay the book down flat as you are coloring without the book closing on itself. Even if you could lay the book flat to color, a lot of the images go right up to the very edge of the binding of the book, so it would be impossible to finish coloring most of the pages unless you removed the page from the book with a razor. The images were definitely curated beautifully, it just really isn't a practical book for actual coloring, unless you were to remove each page before you colored it, which defeats the purpose of a coloring book for me.
