What if you could get leadership advice directly from the man universally recognized as one of America's most admired presidents, Abraham Lincoln himself?

And then what if you could hear from a well-known contemporary marketplace leader about functional ways to apply those lessons today?

In this unique book, you'll be able to do just that, thanks to the creative lessons offered by Lincoln writer, actor, and playwright Gene Griessman. To drive the lessons home, NBA executive Pat Williams offers his trademark wisdom, humor, and practical insight based on his rich and varied personal experiences. If you want your leadership life to pop in a way that spells resounding success, make sure this book is on your shelf, easily within reach. You'll want to refer to it again and again.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Though the unofficial Lincoln Bicentennial Publish-palooza is a crowded field, this stultifying leadership primer may be the most egregious entry to date. Switching off writing duties, Griessman (author and Lincoln portrayer) and Williams (public speaker and senior VP of the NBA's Orlando Magic) manage in 20 chapters to nullify the power of Lincoln's writing, reduce his accomplishments to a checklist of office to-dos, and yoke the 16th president's voice to tired self-help-speak like, "If you want to be successful... you must will that success into existence." Frequent, tone-deaf passages written by Griessman in Lincoln's voice aren't helped by his professional experience; in-character lines include "My name is Lincoln-Abraham Lincoln. And I've been dead for well over a century"; "I am a possibility thinker"; and "I began to learn to value diversity in the little settlements of the frontier." (Excerpts from Lincoln's own writing serve only to show up Greissman's act.) Williams, meanwhile, recounts stories from the front offices of various basketball teams, bizarrely synthesizing Lincoln's ideas with his own advice about visualization, thinking things through, and staying positive. Like unwelcome carpetbaggers in the reconstruction South, these authors seem less interested in spreading the word of Lincoln than in exploiting his moment.

Review

Gene Griessman, Ph. D, and Pat Williams, L.H.D., with the assistance of Peggy Matthews Rose, A. B., have composed one of the finest inspirational books based upon Abraham Lincoln's life and actions. Dr. Griessman is an international figure in the Lincoln field of entertainment as well as a serious professor in universities. Dr. Williams serves as a vice president of the Orlando Magic and has also written and lectured widely on leadership. Together these two writers have authored twenty chapters which inspire men and women to be the best that they can be every day of their lives. Griessman's chapters portray Lincoln as if he, himself, was reliving his life history for the reader. They are in the first person and are so very well researched and related that one forgets that it is Dr. Griessman who is actually narrating the story. In fact, he is famous for his lectures where he portrays Abraham Lincoln. His performances draw large audiences. Everybody can benefit from using this volume to better themselves and become more successful by never giving up. It is a most inspirational work based on Lincoln's own achievements and how he accomplished them.

Great read for any kind of leader, or even everyday people.

I was required to read this book for an educational leadership class. The advice given in this book is very trite and written as if Lincoln is speaking to children rather than adults in leadership positions. (For example, the book starts out with, "My name is Lincoln. Abraham Lincoln.") The second chapter of the book focuses on Lincoln's relationship with his wife, and includes very stereotypical, misogynistic portrayals of her as a nagging, quarrelsome wife that I found incredibly offensive. With so many other leadership books out there, this one is not worth your time/money.

I really enjoyed this book. It was very inspirational.

A rehash of the Words Lincoln Lived By book with the addition of some commentary and experiences of a football coach. Some interesting examples, but not nearly the depth or life-changing insights of Words Lincoln Lived By. I recommend saving your money on this book and purchasing the other one instead, whether you are a leader or simply looking for inspiration for general living.

Over the years I have read a lot of leadership and development books as well as attended seminars and training courses. I consider this book one of the most beneficial that I have ever read. The practical information with areas to focus on helps develop habits that will most certainly serve you well in both your career and your personal life.
