Stop Loving the World (Puritan Treasures for Today) Paperback – March 6, 2011

4.8 out of 5 stars 76 ratings

Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. (1 John 2:15)

Do you live in this world in such a way that people recognize that it is not your treasure?

The Puritans were greatly concerned with suppressing worldliness in the church. Today, worldliness is an even greater problem, exacerbated by the fact that so few dare to speak out against it. In this book, William Greenhill provides modern readers with a healthy antidote to our love affair with the world. He explains what it means to love the world, exposes the dangers of cherishing it, shares how we ought to relate to it, and gives encouraging directions for removing our hearts from it. This is a book with a timeless message, demonstrating the relevance of the Puritans for today. By God's grace, it will help persuade you that the world and all its charms are not what you should live for.

Don't let the world squeeze you into its mold is a modern paraphrase of Paul's warning in Romans 12:2 regarding conformity to this world. William Greenhill's sermon, carefully edited in this volume and made more digestible by introducing separate chapters to the Puritan's lengthy discourse, is as timely as it is necessary. Truth is, we are all too much in love with this world and too little in love with the world to come. Worldliness pervades our churches as much as our individual lives and we need to do something about it quickly. Stop Loving the World is not pleasant reading for it calls attention to a sin that we would sooner tolerate than mortify; but, if we are serious about godliness, mortify it we must. A book to read slowly, carefully, and prayerfully. --Derek W. H. Thomas, John E. Richards Professor of Theology, Reformed Theological Seminary, and Minister of Teaching, First Presbyterian Church, Jackson, MS

How the Christian views this world is very relevant for believers in every age.It is something that needs to be preached and written about frequently. The Puritan era probably wrote considerably more on this subject than Christians of any other generation.I think they realized that a proper understanding of how to view and relate to this world is an essential component of true godliness(and therefore increased usefulness in advancing the Kingdom and glory of God in one's lifetime). The believers sucess in overcoming the world and seperating themselves from its ungodly philosophies and influences was an extremely high priority for them and should be for us.
What are some of the evidences that we love the world in a manner that the Word of God exorts us against:p.6 "when we set too high a value and estimation on the things of this world".When one's thoughts are much on this world and relatively little on 'the world to come'. ..."when he mourns and laments for the things of the world that are taken from him." When we lose something that we value or treasure mucn, our distress will be greater with the loss of it. "When we are resolved to be rich and will have the world one way or another ." If we are willing to use ungodly means(or compromise Biblical principles in any way)that is a sure sign that we love this world in a manner which the Bible forbids.
William Greenhill offer some excellent Biblical for getting our hearts off the world.Look to eternal things. If our mind ands hearts are inordinately set upon the things of this life, not only will we not be spiritually minded, but we will likely be exceedingly worldly minded.Eternal things will never perish(unlike everything in this life which is transient and subject to decay)and we must pray and labour to set our hearts upon them.'For where your treasure is,there will your heart be also'(Matt.6:21). 'The things which are seen are temporal.but the things which are not seen are eternal'(Icor.4:18b).
Some of the reasons and motives why we should not have our hearts fixed upon the world are expounded in Chap.2 and Chap.5:It is idolatrous,It makes God our enemy,It is hostile to golliness,It leads to apostasy and It steals love from Christ.
Stop Loving The World is the finest overall treatment on this doctrine that I have read. Some other very helpful books and chapters on the subject would be:A Treatise On Earthly Mindedness-Jeremiah Burroughs,The World Conquered By The Faithful Christian-Richard Alleine,A.W.Pink's chapter 'The Chrisitan and The World'in his book Profiting From The Word,The chapter 'The True Chrisitan Who Imitates Christ,Hates His Own Life In This World And Forsakes The World' in John Arndt's book True Chrisitanity and the chapter 'The World' in J.C.Ryle's book Practical Religion and the abridged version(published by Grace Publications)Walking With God.

Wow, one of the best Christian exhortations I’ve ever read/heard. Simple, straightforward, and convicting. Every Christian needs to read this book, especially American Christians who are surrounded by so much love of the world and covetousness.

This book written in the poetic prose of the puritans was very thoughtful and convicting. Even Christians who think they have made a distinction from their ways and the ways of the world will find this book helpful. Greenhill marks the observance of the Sabbath as a true litmus test of where our loyalties are...with The Lord or the world.. The book is encouraging as Greenhill reminds us of the many blessings of being "in the world but not of the world". The world loves power, wealth and position and lusts after these things. The Christian needs to be astute to the ways in which we are aligning with the world sometimes without even being aware of it. This book is a quick read!

The book deeply challenged me to constantly assess my outward love and hidden addictions to this world. I have asked myself over and over if I'm grasping at straws or lacking faith in the God who clearly loves me for no good reason. Sometimes the full meaning of the scripture quotes are lost for me in the old English format so it takes more time to mine something as meaningful as intended by the author. But I am motivated to keep trying to understand because he's convinced me that my love for the world is more meaningful to me than I am aware.

This book I read in one evening....I could not put it down. I love the way it is laid out like a treatise. Christians are being lured and kept into this wicked world system and they need to see the truth. Highly recommend this and I plan on reading it several times.

The man expounds the text and goes from theory to practicality in an efficacious way. The adaptation of the language helps the reader to find aid in the text expounded. The reality of earthly and heavenly are presented truthfully and not in a romanticized or allegorical way. Good teaching to take our eyes off the world and love God more.
