Doodle Stitching: Fresh & Fun Embroidery for Beginners Paperback – February 18, 2007
Purchase options and add-ons
"Doodle Stitching is a truly cute book...full of practical and whimsical projects that are neither boring or stodgy.... The projects section of Doodle Stitching shows how to make so many ordinary items special, such as pillow cases, skirts, shoes, shirts, scarves, boxer shorts and napkins. For those that like to take their creativity and sewing skills that little bit further, there are small projects to make and embroider,... This is a good book for beginner embroiderers that would like a fun place to start, for more experienced embroiderers that might have become a bit jaded with more traditional patterns and could do with some light inspiration, and for anyone that likes to look at well-designed craft books full of cute projects."--Whipup.net

- Reviewed in the United States on November 5, 2007I have never done embroidery so I wanted to buy one book that not only would teach me the stitches and get me started with supplies, but would also provide some patterns/ideas to inspire me. This book is perfect. It contains very clear instructions with pictures for the beginners like me, but goes on with some gorgeous/adorable projects that anyone can do (yet look so professional). The baby/wall quilt is worth the book's price alone; it is just amazing.
I am not a person who has to only follow patterns (even though this book is perfect for that type of person) so I was inspired when reading the book that my simple doodles could be rendered in thread. I would never have thought about doing that. So not only does this book inspire you to do the projects (all but a few I plan on doing, and even the ones I won't do right now are still lovely), but it encourages you to go out on your own and create your own works of art.
I only hope that this author eventually puts out a pattern book in addition to this book (this book has wonderful patterns, but I am itching to have more of her gorgeous work in my hot little hands). I have followed some of her work on that popular crafter message board and it is simply outstanding.
I am so happy I invested in this book and especially happy that one little inexpensive book is all I need to start in my new art: Embroidery.
Buy this book for yourself AND a friend. You will not be sorry.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 9, 2011I am a beginner when it comes to embroidery. I went and checked out a lot of books from the Library but couldn't find anything that I was looking for until I purchased Doodling. Wow! what whimsical patterns, simple but really cute and great for a beginner. I can now transfer designs to any cloth or project I desire because of the simple instructions that Aimee gives.
I needed a book that would show how to do basic stitches in a simple manner and explain finish, transfer, etc. This book did that. There are also a lot of cute projects that would be simple to make.
I love this book so much that I bought Aimee's second book, Doodle Stitching 400+ easy designs. I can't wait to get the book. I have read many of the reviews and most everyone is pleased with the second book, as well as, this book. The second book comes with a CD so you can resize and print out the patterns. Also I understand Aimee explains about transferring designs and more stitches.
I don't want to purchase prestamped items to embroider because they are expense and they limit my choices. I can now transfer any of these cute designs to any surface I want. I can't wait to embroider some of my own blouses, dish towels, and make simple but splendid gifts.
I hope to be able to show my grandaughters how to emborider also. This book would interest teens as well.
I highly recommend purchasing both of Aimee Ray's books.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 23, 2011I've always been a crafty person, and I bought this book already familiar with the basics of sewing, quilting and embroidery. I was just looking for some inspiration and ideas for new embroidery projects, especially since I am a truly terrible artist when it comes to drawing patterns. All the designs in here look great; I didn't see a single thing that struck me as old- fashioned or typical for embroidery patterns. She gives plenty of instructions about how to make different stitches, and there were several stitches in the book that I had never seen before. There are so many projects that look fun and interesting that I can't wait to get to them all! I already started work on the quilt in the book and so far her instructions have been crystal clear and the results are much better than I anticipated.
The reason I gave the book four stars out of five is because there are a few awkward dimensions given for some of the projects. For example, Ray lists sizes for the circle applique shapes of the quilt without specifying whether the measures are diameter and circumference. Diameter is much easier to measure so that's what I assumed, but some experimenting with a compass showed that it was actually circumference that she listed. It was easy to convert the sizes to diameter, I just can't believe I had to divide by pi outside of a math class. So let me take this opportunity to apologize to my year three teacher, Ms. Wilson- you were right, that math you made us learn wasn't totally impractical.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 22, 2013I am new at embroidery, so I searched a bit to find just the perfect book to teach me how to do it. Turns out, this is exactly the perfect book for me. It teaches the more basic stitches, and then some, and indicates what these stitches are good to use for. It also goes into sewing instructions that you will need for finishing off your embroidered pieces. There are also quite a few projects and patterns included.
What I especially love about this book is that it encourages free form embroidery and how you can take any idea or pattern and do it differently each time where it will look completely unique. The author illustrates that just by changing colors and stitches you can totally change your design. I was just amazed by this and it has inspired me to let my creativity soar. I can't imagine that any other book would do this for me. I have already gone through all of the stitches and practiced them, and I am ready to start my first project. I'm so excited. I'd highly recommend this book for beginners, or for anyone looking for inspiration!

5.0 out of 5 stars teneroso!
Testo interamente in inglese
PRO: ricami ben spiegati, vari punti da cui attingere anche per altri lavori, tanti progetti ben definiti.
CONTRO: ad oggi nessuno.
