James Fenimore Cooper: Two Novels of the American Revolution (LOA #312): The Spy: A Tale of the Neutral Ground / Lionel Lincoln; or, The Leaguer of ... of America James Fenimore Cooper Edition) Hardcover – November 27, 2018
Purchase options and add-ons
With his second novel, The Spy:A Tale of the Neutral Ground, in 1821, James Cooper (the Fenimore would come later) found his true voice and what became his most enduring subject matter: the history of his young nation, born of the clash between Old World and New. Set largely in Westchester County--site of the real-life intrigues of Benedict Arnold and Major John Andre--The Spy traces the conflicting allegiances of rebels and loyalists, with the supposed loyalist spy Harvey Birch (actually in the service of George Washington) finding himself caught up in conflicts between friendship and duty as he moves between the two sides. Washington himself makes an incognito appearance as the mysterious "Mr. Harper." Cooper continued in the same vein with Lionel Lincoln; Or, The Leaguer of Boston (1825), a carefully researched panorama of the coming of the Revolution, complete with detailed depictions of the battles of Lexington and Concord and Bunker Hill. With the hero a native-born American serving in the British Army, issues of loyalty are again complex, and some American reviewers, not for the last time, found Cooper's politics a bit too ambiguous for comfort.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 10, 2020These wonderful novels by America's original historical novelist reek of early American character and experience and deserve a place on every American's bookshelf. Easy to read, engaging, compelling, and thought provoking, The Spy (in particular) should be required reading in public schools IMO.
Like all books in the series, this LOA volume is built to last for generations. It fits great in the hand, is typeset perfectly, has a durable fabric cover under a sturdy dust jacket, and utilizes acid-free paper that will not turn yellow.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 24, 2019I have always liked Cooper as a writer, but it was interesting to see him address the American Revolution as a setting rather than the early American frontier.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 2, 2019This book contains Cooper's The Spy and Lionel Lincoln. His writing style is on the flowery side. If I haven't read Cooper in a while it takes me about a chapter to acclimate to his style, then I'm hooked. I stayed up all night finishing The Spy. I was three chapters into Lionel Lincoln when the clock chimed 4: 30 in the morning.
The Spy was exciting reading with plenty of suspense, drama and action. Like Last of the Mohicans there were some sad parts. He drew characters I loved and a couple I loved to hate.
Lionel Lincoln is set in Boston around the time of the battle of Bunker Hill. The main character is a British soldier who is heir to large estates in England though he grew up in Boston. The main theme of this tale is about family secrets.
Cooper was born six years after the war for independence ended, so the events were still fresh in people's minds but were beginning to acquire the luster of legends. I could see it in the way The Spy is told. I noticed it also in Cooper's sea tale The Pilot which features John Paul Jones.
The Library of America Edition is the best you can find. In their publications, they strive to find texts that most closely reflect the author's original intent. I have lots of Library of America and I can't recall finding misprint or proofreading mistakes. Their paper is always high quality and in books with lots of pages, they choose paper reminiscent of india paper. This particular volume is only in the neighborhood of 800 pages so the paper is slightly thicker. The bindings are the best I have seen anywhere. I really like the dustjacket on this volume. It still has the calligraphy by Gun Larson and the red white and blue stripe but they added artwork making it more attractive.
I am happy to have such a well-made edition as I loved both novels and plan to read them again.
It was 28 years between the publication of the last LOA Cooper volume (containing The Pilot and Red Rover) and this one. I hope they don't wait as long before the next one as I am apt to be dead by then. LOA has published all of Melville and Twain. I hope they do the same with Cooper.
