High schooler Charlie West just woke up in a nightmare.

He’s strapped to a chair. He’s covered in blood and bruises. He hurts all over. And a strange voice outside the door just ordered his death.

Charlie West is a good kid. The last thing he can remember, he was a normal high-school student doing normal things—working on his homework, practicing karate, daydreaming of becoming an air force pilot, writing a pretty girl’s number on his hand. How long ago was that? And more to the point . . . How is he going to get out of this room alive?

By calling on his deepest reserves of strength and focus, Charlie manages a desperate escape . . . only to find out that this nightmare isn't ending. There's a whole year of his life that he can't remember—a year in which he was convicted of murdering his best friend and working with terrorists.

Now, with the police hunting him and a band of killers on his trail, he's got to find the answers to some of the deepest questions there are: Who am I? What do I stand for? And how am I going to stay alive?

As the first book in the Homelander series, it grabs you from the first words. Klavan's masterpiece is filled with intrigue, adventure, patriotism, and simple awareness of discovering and holding onto what is right and true. A favorite of mine and my high school juniors and seniors!

My 10 and 8 year old sons love this series! I read this book as well to see what they were reading. It has lots of action to keep them engaged and is definitely written for a younger audience. The content may be a little too old for my boys as the main character is in high school and talks a lot about the girl he likes, but it’s nothing inappropriate. I appreciate this book for drawing in my 10-year-old and creating a desire to read. He declared it, “the best book he’s ever read” when he finished it. He then read the next three books in the series. I call that a win.

I finished "The Last Thing I Remember" the other day, and my stepdaughter finished it last night. (It speaks well for the book, no doubt, that she started it last night at bedtime and didn't go to sleep until she'd finished it!)

We both liked it -- the action was good, the premise was very interesting indeed. My stepdaughter felt that it was begging to be made into a movie -- which, given the bankruptcy of ideas currently reigning in Hollywood, seems a safe enough prediction.

She felt, however, that the book didn't have enough of a point to it. I disagreed on that -- a boy who suddenly finds himself in strange and dangerous circumstances, who must figure out who he is and what to do next, seemed a fine premise to me.

On the other hand, we both felt that the book leaves too many issues unresolved. (Why does our protagonist not remember ANYTHING of the past year?... we've seen nothing to even suggest how this could be possible. We get a brief glimpse of his parents reacting to his predicament, but not enough, and nothing at all from his Sensei; that didn't feel right either.) Granted, it's the first book in a series, but leaving such major issues unresolved makes the ending unsatisfying. Perhaps it would have been better to resolve the major issues, at least partially, and leave one or two minor questions as enticement to read the next one. As it is, I may read the next Homelanders book, hoping to figure out what happened -- but it'll be out of irritation, not excitement.

Nonetheless, I did enjoy TLTIR for the most part. Reading an adventure story with a center-right perspective was also refreshing; they don't seem to be thick on the ground these days. I found it a bit heavy-handed at times, but not annoyingly so. I did wonder when the protagonist had a crisis of conscience about himself, but never for a moment about his country (which seems to have dealt him a cruel hand); but perhaps that, too, will be explored more in later books in the series. The brief cameo appearance by Winston Churchill was great! -- I hope we see more of our hero's inspirations and role models, and how he is helped by them.

All in all, an enjoyable read. I'm encouraged to check out Mr. Klavan's other work. Keep 'em coming!

I purchased this book for my 12 year old son with hopes to entice him to put the XBOX & IPOD down. As always, I read the book first .. you never can be too safe! I loved it!! Its full of action and adventure. Charlie West is an ordinary teenager soon to be young man. He faces obstacles that would make the strongest of believers give in and surrender but with words of wisdom from mentors in his life and his faith, he pushes through each one. I agree with some of the other reviews, the ending is abrupt and there is no sense of accomplishment as a reader. After putting in many nights/hours of reading when you finish the book you want to have some answers. However, it just made me crave the next book- which is exactly what the author was trying to accomplish!!

When my son started reading it, we would talk about the book at the breakfast table each morning. He even told me he felt like we were in a "book club" together. He did in fact put the XBOX down and finished the book in a record 48 hours (record for him!). He is excited to read the next book, we ordered it from the local bookstore today. Anything that encourages reading in a child is priceless to me! Thank you Andrew Klavan for taking the risks you have taken with writing these types of books and know there are tons of kids out there putting down the remote control and picking up your books!!!

I seriously can find nothing wrong with this book. Written in a simple, down-to-earth, first person style, it is still somehow well written. Klavan is a master. He seamlessly mixes current action with the necessary background information, giving you time to breathe and laugh before being thrown back into the fray. The main character is not the typical teenage boy you find in most novels. Though there is a girl he likes, he's not head over heels, and he actually knows what he believes and acts on it. Though there is a little blood and some fist fights(karate, actually), over all I would not call it a violent book. It is very intense, though; not for the weak of heart. The ending leaves you longing for the next book yet finishes nicely, unlike the Left Behind: The Kids books, which always leave you desperately hanging. So, I would recommend this to almost anyone! Tighten your seat belts and enjoy the ride!
