Prayer of the Heart: The Contemplative Tradition of the Christian East Paperback – September 1, 2008
Purchase options and add-ons
In this comprehensive guide to contemplative prayer, George Maloney, S.J., a leading exponent of the Eastern Orthodox spiritual tradition in the decades after Vatican II, opens up this tradition of prayer--in particular the Jesus Prayer--to Western Christians in a clear and practical manner. Unmatched as a readable and complete guide to Eastern spirituality during its fifteen-year history of publication, it fills a void in the spirituality market for today's readers as well.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 6, 2017This is a favorite book. The author helps one to see the path toward a deepening
relationship with God. He clearly portrays the Gospel as the foundation and path
toward a growing relationship with Jesus. He explains the true purpose of the
Jesus prayer. This has been on my favorites list for several year now.
Have read it several times.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 4, 2017This book came highly recommended by a most trusted scholar and friend, and this aspiring mystic and member of the Traditional Martinist Order, Whole heartedly endorses this absolute gem on Hesychast in light of the Prayer of the Heart and more! What a find! Perfect and surprisingly awesome! Thank You!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 20, 2016A specialized subject on Christian spirituality. Well done, but subject matter has limited audience. Leo
- Reviewed in the United States on June 7, 2018a really good examination of the Eastern tradition of contemplative prayer from the perspective of a Catholic theologian. He knows so much about Orthodoxy and really understands the essence of the faith.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 11, 2017This book does a great job of describing the meaning of Light from God and how we can open ourselves to receive it.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 6, 2018Because I am a Western Christian who has been drawn into an Eastern rite over the past few years, primarily for liturgical reasons, I received this book with great anticipation. I have been studying the Eastern Fathers, Hesychasm, and the Jesus Prayer for the past several months, and thought that this book might be a good addition to my collection on this subject. Reading the previous reviews, I believed that this book would have some spiritual depth, and that it would add something to the this great tradition. Unfortunately, I think it falls short.
Prayer of the Heart is well written and easy to follow without being simplistic. But the content isn't useful to me. It's somewhat historical, in that it draws from historical figures. But it's certainly not a thorough historical reference on this subject. It's somewhat spiritual, in that it draws from this tradition and expresses some of it's spiritual teachings. It's a shame that so many of the teachings are left behind or dismissed entirely in the author's attempt to "demythologize" both the Fathers and the Scriptures. I only made it about 60 percent through this book, and in that short amount of reading the author has used the word "demythologize" about 10 times. It is clearly very important to him that we accept all of the psychological truths found in this tradition, while dismissing anything that seems too unpalatable for our modern tastes. All that fallen angel and demon stuff — you know, we just need to "demythologize" all of that.
This book reads like a slightly shallow essay on a primary aspect of the Eastern Christian spiritual tradition, with the author's "demytholization" added for our benefit so that we don't fall prey to too much of that woo-woo nonsense that the Fathers (and New Testament authors) believed in. As is often typical with Western writing, this book is much more verbose than it needs to be, given it's narrow focus. You can learn more about Eastern Christian thought by reading one paragraph from Theophan the Recluse than this entire book.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 4, 2014I'm on my 5th reading. No more darkness, only light. No more restlessness, only peace. A transfigured world. No more duality, only oneness.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 6, 2013This was a perfect read for a retreat. Exactly what the heart and soul was looking for.
Exactly what I expected. Great for discussion workshop too.
