The True Story of a Bald Eagle’s Fall and Rescue

Esther the eaglet is learning to fly when she falls from her nest. She is alone and injured. Who will help the baby eagle? With real bald eagle pictures, this true story explains how raptor centers and rehabilitation teams rescue and treat injured birds. Their goal is to release bald eagles and other birds back into the wild to live successful, natural lives. Esther’s story is just such a success!

Award-winning author Christie Gove-Berg wrote this picture book after her mom and dad found the injured eaglet hopping along on their land.

  • The Raptor Center at the University of Minnesota helped in Esther’s rescue and rehabilitation, and they assisted in ensuring this book’s accuracy.
  • Part of the proceeds from the sale of Esther the Eaglet will benefit the Raptor Center.

Editorial Reviews

About the Author

Christie Gove-Berg loves nature and wildlife. Her first book, Esther the Eaglet, was written after the rescue of an injured eaglet on her parents’ land. Her second book in the series, Maggie the One-Eyed Peregrine Falcon, was inspired by a young bird that was injured while learning to fly in the middle of a big city. (Now Maggie is an educational bird at The Wildlife Center of Virginia, teaching people about raptors.) Christie’s regional book, Minnesota Must-See for Families, encourages families to document their Minnesota adventures together. Christie donates a portion of the profits from her raptor books to The Raptor Center at the University of Minnesota and The Wildlife Center of Virginia. When she has free time, Christie enjoys writing, reading, cooking, hiking, and camping. Her perfect day would be a kayak ride to a sandy beach on the St. Croix River with her friends and family. And lots of laughter.

Esther lands on the forest floor in a heap. She stands and tries to raise her wings again, but she lets out a shrill whistle. In her left wing there is a new sensation: pain.

***

She looks around and notices people in the distance. They are watching her. She whistles in fear.

A car arrives and a woman gets out. She is trained and knows what to do. She sneaks slowly toward Esther.

In a sudden, surprising motion, the woman scoops up Esther and puts her in a small, dark place. Now Esther can only hear the growl of the car engine and the beat of her heart.

***

When Esther is taken out of the dark box, she is in a different place, called a Raptor Center. It is like a hospital for eagles and other raptors. The room is full of strange equipment.

Esther is achy, angry and afraid. People move carefully and quietly around her. One of them gently places her on a tall table. With her sharp eyes, Esther watches the people closely.

Christy Gove ( previously Gove-Berg) is the author of five books. Her raptor rescue series includes: "Esther the Eaglet; A True Story of Rescue and Rehabilitation", "Maggie the One-Eyed Peregrine Falcon; A True Story of Rescue and Rehabilitation", "Greta the Great Horned Owl; A True Story of Rescue and Rehabilitation", and "Bailey the Bear Needs Help". These are all true children's stories, told in photos, about injured raptors and the work of wildlife rehabilitation centers. "Must-See Minnesota for Families: An A-Z List" is a travel diary of sorts with alphabetical ideas of fun places to visit in Minnesota. Each location in the book has a space for kids to write their thoughts and reactions to the experience of visiting that place. In this way, the book becomes a family heirloom of children's memories, their handwriting, and their funny thoughts and opinions. Christy enjoys writing stories for children, as well as writing fiction and poetry. She lives in Minnesota and loves "The North". Her perfect day is spent on the St Croix River with her family, a picnic lunch, and some kayaks.

In June 2016 - "Maggie the One-Eyed Peregrine Falcon: A True Story of Rescue and Rehabilitation" was awarded the prestigious Mom's Choice Award. The Mom's Choice Award evaluates products and services created for parents and educators and is globally recognized for establishing a benchmark of excellence in family-friendly media, products, and services.

"Her favorite weather is wind." The telling of this true story is engaging and uplifting, just like Esther's favorite weather. Thanks, Christie Gove-Berg for shining light on raptor centers and their work to keep our growing eagle population healthy and strong. You've successfully captured a unique voice for wildlife as they experience human contact, recovery and rehabilitation. The additional information you've placed at the end of the book, about the life of eagles, raptors and raptor centers is especially valuable. Great photos too! A great educational tool for the young and young at heart.
