"As you look deeply into your own awareness, and relax the self-contraction, and dissolve into the empty ground of your own primordial experience, the simple feeling of Being—right now, right here—is it not obvious all at once? Were you not present from the start? Did you not have a hand to play in all that was to follow? Did not the dream itself begin when you got bored with being God? Was it not fun to get lost in the productions of your own wondrous imagination, and pretend it all was other? Did you not write this book, and countless others like it, simply to remind you who you are?"
—Ken Wilber

The author of nineteen books of philosophy and psychology, Ken Wilber is a pioneering thinker who has developed an integral "theory of everything" that embraces the truths of both Eastern spirituality and Western science. Yet while he is best known for his scholarly research into the world's contemplative traditions, Wilber is also an accomplished spiritual practitioner and mystic in his own right. In order to highlight the personal wisdom of this popular author, the editors of
The Simple Feeling of Being have assembled a collection of inspirational, mystical, and instructional passages drawn from his publications. These heartfelt writings, born of Ken's own meditation practice and inner experiences, include:

   •  Poetic passages of contemplative insights and reflections
   •  Inspired descriptions of Spirit, Nondual Awareness, the Witness, One Taste, and other topics
   •  Commentary on the spiritual contributions of figures such as Ralph Waldo Emerson, Saint Teresa of Ávila, Meister Eckhart, and Ramana Maharshi
   •  Anecdotes of personal experience and glimpses into Wilber's inner world
   •  Practical spiritual instructions and guided meditations

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

The Hegel of Eastern spirituality, philosopher-psychologist-spiritual practitioner Wilber is made accessible in this single-volume anthology drawn from his 19 works. The man who wrote A Brief History of Everything can be a formidable read given his strong theoretical bent, as selections illustrate ("the referents of the transcendental signifiers exist in a worldspace that is disclosed to those with the appropriate developmental signifieds"). But Wilber is essentially a mystic and interpreter of the mystic traditions of both the East and the West, as his wide-ranging references to spiritual masters make clear. He differs from many mystics, however, in ambitiously seeking the understanding as well as the experience of the non-dual consciousness of mysticism—the most suitable words as well as what the words signify. Selections can be lyrical and downright simple ("The directions to finding God, which are printed on the box in which your heart came, are simple"). Especially concrete is the unsparing, loving witness he offers of the death of his wife, the subject of Grace and Grit: Spirituality and Healing in the Life and Death of Treya Killam Wilber. This taste of his work should earn new appreciation for the prolific author, offering a useful shortcut for those who have never been able to finish any of his frequently daunting volumes.

Some of Ken Wilbur's book are very academic in nature and can be quite arduous to read; others are poetic and almost conversational: I often feel that I am actually in the room learning directly from him. He explains the esoteric in a clear and understandable way. His wisdom is encyclopedic but his explanations of things of the Spirit are absolutely clear to even the rawest of novices. I often read favourite passages as a guide before my own meditation practice time. It helps to keep me sharply focused and provides a clarity of intention and purpose during my hour of contemplative stillness. Reading Ken Wilbur is the highest form of Spiritual study. He has an enormous heart and that compassion is perfectly exemplified in "The Simple Feeling of Being" I would wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone on the Spiritual Path.

Ken Wilber is one of the true "Yodas" of modern contemplative practice! This compilation of segments from his other works is a perfect introduction to his philosophy and contains page after page of useful information. For example, chapter 2 contains a gut-wrenching and inspiring account of his final days with his lover, Treya, as she learns of and later dies from a fatal illness. She gives all of us a perfect example of the proper way to live and the proper way to die. If this one doesn't leave you running repeatedly for the tissue box you're either an android or you don't speak English! All-in-all this book is a must-read addition to the library of anyone who is investigating their own identity as a manifestation of "Spirit". Thanks once more, Ken!!

Ken Wilber's writings make you feel better than you did before you read them. Everything is everything and it's all going to be OK. Don't worry be happy. I remember that each time I fill my gas tank these days. This book is a splendid compilation of Wilber's writings and philosophies.
When your true nature is understood as Wilber explains it we really don't have to worry about a thing because we are the same electrostatic energy that we have always been now in this our present human form and that shall always be the case.

If everybody read and studied Ken Wilber then this world to them would be a spectacular carnival of delight whether your fate was a mansion in Newport or being a blind leper in Calcutta with a sinew of thread hanging from the hole in your face where your nose used to be, on a hot day with mosquitoes biting your gums.

I enjoy reading all Ken Wilbers' books and this one was no exception. So this is hardly an unbiased review. As a compilation of various writings it was like an intro to his ideas for those who are not familiar with them. The chapter on the death of his wife was powerful and moving and I would recommend the book for that alone

The breathe, the overwhelming scope, the richness and depth of Ken Wilbur's thought -- this anthology of excerpts from Wilbur's many books -- is an excellent book to recommend to friends (or, better yet, to give to friends) who may want to know Wilbur's philosophy, but don't know where to begin. Honestly, I love this book.

Having read another book by Ken Wilber, this one had the advantage of presenting through excerpts from all his other works of giving me a pretty accurate idea of his whole philosopy which is actually a mush of all religions and spiritual teachings through the eyes not of a philosopher or a guru but of a pretty much average person of today's world, very well versed in all his subjects but without adding to the above not even a hair of his own making or understanding.
The book copy was excellent and delivered promptly and so I have to thank you a lot.

Ken Wilber is just one of those individuals that speaks to your heart every time he opens his mouth. Only into the 2nd chapter, but looking forward to the book journey. I purchased this because a psychologist recommended it to a friend. I hadn't read anything from Wilber since No Boundaries, but was happy to have a reason to experience him again... and that is what you get with his books, the experience of what he is talking about. Just happens.... It is not the kind of book you sit down and devour in a day. I like to devour a page and let it simmer.

I loved the collection of Ken Wilber's writings, none of which I had read before. I think it's an excellent collection for both new and experienced readers of Ken Wilber's writing. For some reason I had thought that his writing would be dry and highly intellectual. I was pleasantly surprised by how much passion comes through in his writing.
