Christmas Stories from a Country Vet
Favorite veterinarian storyteller John McCormack breaks new ground in this heartwarming and humorous collection you will want to read in front of an open fire on a cold winter's night. From his memories of getting his first pocketknife-for a country family with limited means in 1942 it was a big deal-through his years in vet school and then practicing in rural Choctow County, Alabama, McCormack conveys the closeness of family and friends (including our furry friends) emblematic of family holiday traditions.
McCormack shares the enjoyable hazards of being a country vet, tales of family pets and farm animals he has cared for, especially during the holidays. He understands both the human and the animal heart and shares the lessons he has learned, including how his love for four-legged creatures taught him about the promise and the miracle of Christmas.
Dr. John McCormack has worked as a veterinarian throughout the South and has taught at veterinary colleges at Auburn University and the University of Georgia, among others. His books include The Hero of the Herd, Fields and Pastures New, and A Friend of the Flock. He lives in Greensboro, Georgia.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 5, 2010Dr. McCormack is to Alabama what James Herriott was to the British Dales- just without the TV show. If you want to see what back roads small town rural life of the 1960s and 70s was really like, follow Dr. McCormack as he goes on his rounds in his pick-up truck. See how small town citizens work together, mostly to their mutual benefit. Centered about Christmas Stories that were actually lived, they let us join the local vet and his family during the Holidays. These stories are not to be read quickly, that would almost be to throw them away. These stories deserve to be savored more than once. This a a book to keep.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 7, 2019Book is in good condition. Good stories of how a vet spends Christmas with the vet calls and family.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 10, 2013Short stories about Christmas vetting in Alabama. The Dr. has kind of a dry humor about him but all the stories were enjoyable. This book can be read in just a couple of hours, so it's great if you have to wait on someone or just have a small amount of time to while away.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 22, 2008Very pleased. Have not gotten to read yet, but know I will enjoy. This Country Vet was the vetinarian in my husband's home town when he was a child. He does not remember him since his Granddad took care of their animals, however, I know some of the stories and the people referenced in the book he will recognize and we will both enjoy reliving his memories.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 13, 2009A nice selection of Christmas stories by Dr. John McCormack. Enjoyed it very much.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 19, 2009I wrote the book. How do you suppose I'd feel about it? Wow, what a fine little Christmas book! Don't understand why you guys haven't sold a million or so of them. Or for that matter, any of the other three that you have...
- Reviewed in the United States on January 14, 2009A wonderful collection of Dr. McCormack's Christmas adventures! Amazingly written, cleverly told- you will love this book. An Alabama veterinarian takes you on his farm calls and even some more personal business. I encourage you to read all his books! You won't be disappointed!
