Editorial Reviews
Review
"Not only do [these] books provide a solid grounding in phonics and sight words, they’re actually fun to read.” — bilingualmonkeys.com
“The best thing about these stories is that the illustrations and stories are funny, without being cutesy. They'll appeal to boys and girls, and they'll also appeal to older kids who are working to learn phonics. They have clear story lines (a beginning, middle and end)—so kids read to understand the silly story, not just hear the words.” — greatkidbooks.blogspot.com
“[The] author does a fantastic job of writing a coherent story using a limited selection of words. The stories and pictures are quite entertaining, and the vocabulary progression is excellent.” — blog.montessoriforeveryone.com

About the author

Nora Gaydos is an elementary school teacher in Connecticut with over ten years of experience teaching kindergarten, first grade, third grade, and fourth grade. She has a comprehensive understanding of how beginning readers develop from pre-readers to independent readers. As a teacher, she was inspired to create the Now I'm Reading program after seeing firsthand how children learn to read. Her goal was to build a series that was fun, motivating, and "just right" for beginning readers.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 30, 2016These are wonderful books. The confidence my son feels when he gets to read to me -- priceless. These are repetitive books only changing 1 work on each page - and that one word is pictured on the page so it makes it easy for a child learning to read feel confident to speak up and read. It also makes him want to learn to read. I'm so grateful for books like these -- as a parent there is no greater joy than seeing that spark in your childs eye when they feel like that have accomplished something they are striving so hard to obtain. There are a set of sight words (32) with these books that includes colors, a guide book, a word play activity book and 8 books. Worth every penny!
I highly recommend these books to any parent.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 26, 2018Word Play Pre-Reader
The Word Play Pre-Reader is for teaching specific sight words like AND or A or IS, etc.
Each book repeats a specific sentence changing some words each time, but keeping the sight words the same. For example, the first book is "A hat and a ______" format so it teaches the sight words A and AND.
The last two books are different since they tackle numbers and colors. So those two books have more sight words than in the others.
This set includes 8 story books and 32 flashcards of the sight words. There is a parent guide and an "activity" book in the back. It did not come with any stickers (like readers level 1+ do).
Since the books tackle sight words... some of the books are appropriate for first time readers and others are not. Her level 1 books very carefully control the phonetic sounds so as to not introduce too much at once... however the Word Play book do not do this. So these are READ ALONG books (not first readers.) That means the parent or teacher will do most of the reading and maybe only have the child read the sight words they were supposed to memorize.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 9, 2019I have tried what feels like a million products with my reluctant reader. We finally found a winner with these. He enjoys these books and does not argue with me about practicing reading! The pictures and story are engaging. Much more interesting than Bob books and other beginning readers. I only wish Amazon offered all of these books for sale. It’s hard to find any above level 2.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 17, 2010My 5 year old son loves these books. I especially like the shapes that are inside that your child colors a fraction of as they read the book more and more. My son is so proud of himself when he colors the whole shape in, he is a more confident reader and speller because this set is just so much fun.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 8, 2017My toddler is two, and we've only been working with this for a couple months and she's mastered it! We cuddle and I give her a craisin when she gets a correct answer or when she shows a lot of grit trying to guess. I make sure never to make her feel bad for getting a wrong answer, and we stop whenever she wants to stop, but even when she gets frustrated she seems to really enjoy the challenge and won't stop when I offer to stop. She begs to do her sight words every day! Ready for the next set.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 6, 2014This is a great little book set. I have 3 kids and bought this for my youngest who is 4 year old. I love the fact that the books and cards are kept in a easy to use book!! That's a huge plus. No lost books or pieces. We have only done the 1st book but so far it's great. It's easy to use and has clear parent directions as well. I like the additional games and writing at the end of the books as well.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 11, 2015My daughter was 5 when I purchased it and now she is 6. She loves that she can read on her on. She makes sentences from the sight word cards now.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great books to motivate pre-readers!
My 5 year old daughter loves to read these stories. She is so motivated to get a sticker. She has brought in a couple of the books to read to her daycare teacher once she has mastered them. Wonderful!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Reading Aid
Used these books for both my children and they enjoy them. Easy enough to build their confidence. The only complaint is the plastic case the flash cards are housed in breaks easily.
