From the Author's Note
On July 16, 1969, the Apollo 11 mission to the moon began with the launch of a Saturn V rocket from Kennedy Space Center in Florida. After being thrust through space, the command module, Columbia, and the lunar module, Eagle, separated from the rocket and headed for the moon. On board were three astronauts: Neil Armstrong, Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin, and Michael Collins.
On July 20, Eagle detached from Columbia and made its descent to the lunar surface. Collins remained aboard Columbia, orbiting the moon, while the other two astronauts landed Eagle on an area of the moon called the Sea of Tranquility. Armstrong and Aldrin performed scientific tests and collected samples of soil and rock. After two and a half hours, the astronauts planted an American flag as a reminder of their visit and left the lunar surface.
Although the entire mission lasted only eight days, its historic nature makes it one of the most famous missions of the space program.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 31, 2020We love this book! My kid asked to read this book at bed time almost every day for two weeks. He’s two years old and loves the rhythm of the words. He memorized a few of the pages before I did. :)
The artwork is beautiful and the story is simple, accurate and compelling.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 14, 2014With the marketplace being flooded by Princesses, Trains, Bears & Superheros - it is refreshing to see a children's book telling the tale of some real life heros.
Eight Days Gone is the story of the 1969 Apollo 11 Lunar Moon Mission that spans from the famous shuttle's launch to its oceanic return with a parade thrown in for good measure.
McReynolds writing style keeps the story flowing with a rhythmic rhyme scheme that a parent could easily add a musical tone to keep repeated readings fresh, while O'Rourke's detailed illustrations and shading provides a fantastic backdrop to compliment the story.
It's few & far between that kids get to hear an amazing story of history, but Eight Days Gone rises up to the challenge & makes this book a must-have for all Jr. Astronauts.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 5, 2013This book brings back the excitement of the first man on the moon. The illustrations capture your child's interest in outer space from the point of view of the actual astronauts. Young readers may enjoy the rhyming narrative but the illustrations tell the story too. My son believes that star wars stories are "real" so I was happy to show him a real space story with lots of details of this great feat of the 20th century.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 4, 2012This book has it all for your kids... Great art... Great prose... And a GREAT subject! Its based on fact and still fun. Wish there were more books like this to share with little kids.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 19, 2013He loves rocket ships and astronauts. If your child is into those kinds of things, this is a must buy book. I checked it out at the library after hearing it at "Book Babies" and had to buy him his own personal copy. It is that good. The author wrote the book in rhyme and it is very fun to read out loud.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 31, 2013Great, easy read for young readers that gives them an introduction to one, if not the most, important excursion into science and technology ever. Kids love the art.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 4, 2015A great book to read aloud and then use as a model for writing about an important event in our history. Children can write poetically and factually as McReynolds did about another event in America's history.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 4, 2021This book is so great for any budding space lover! The board book is nice a durable for little hands as well!

5.0 out of 5 stars Moon landing story for toddlers
Fabulous board book about the moon landings. I wanted something for my 3 year olds to mark the 50th anniversary and this really ticks all the boxes. Very well written and illustrated for the younger reader. They grasp the concept of astronauts in a spaceship going to the moon thanks to this book!
