- Reviewed in the United States on June 23, 2021This book works great groups. It has questions at the end of each chapter to help with the personal understanding of the book and the group discussions.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 23, 2000As we grow up with the notion of a loving God only one thing goes on tormenting us why does God allow us to suffer. This book really answers a lot of things which trouble us, the notion of what true love really means with freedom and also makes us think why dont we do something to remove suffering
- Reviewed in the United States on May 16, 2010I have to admit I was looking for something to help a loved one in pain and to help myself deal with things as a caregiver. There's some good stuff here, but the emphasis is overly much on interpreting scripture rather than applying scripture to real life to give hope and meaning to sufferers. It's very good for the interpretation part and is worth the price for that alone.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 4, 2011Fr. Harrington offers readers a topical survey of the Biblical literature regarding suffering. He highlights scriptural explanations of retribution, punishment for wickedness, good v. evil, redemptive suffering and suffering as discipline and trials as we look forward to eternal paradise. He touches on each of these areas, but I don't think he ever deeply explores any of them adequately; therefore, this is a relatively short, superficial book -- not unhelpful but not deep enough to be truly meaningful to readers searching for the godly comfort and counsel.
The author is a Biblical scholar and also includes a good bit of writing on the apocryphal writings of Sirach and Maccabees among others. He spends equal time on the suffering of Jesus and Christians in light of the New Testament. This is where I think he could have done much more exploration and in-depth writing.
In writing about the books of the Bible, Fr. Harrington takes a late date on authorship of all the books including Deuteronomy, Daniel, Isaiah and the gospels. He shares the opinions of form and text critics of the Bible, but I was troubled by his assertion of certitude on dating and interpretation tied to late dates.
Overall, this book is good but does not offer the full discussion and deep exploration of suffering that I anticipated.

3.0 out of 5 stars I liked the book but it was not in good condition ...
I liked the book but it was not in good condition when received and marked up. I was not pleased with the response from my complaint and will not purchase any more books for now until I am sure that I will receive the quality which I expected.
