- Reviewed in the United States on June 27, 2016This book is rather large with small print, so it's definitely PACKED with information. I read somewhere (on some prepper site) that it was a good book to buy. I'd love to be a prepper, but let's face it guys, that's expensive! With this I figure I can be a 'mini-prepper' because I'll only have to have food enough for a hard fall/winter season, and then this book comes in handy after that.
There is SO much knowledge in here! I really thought it would be some anecdotal stuff with some handy things thrown in with cute phrases, but seriously! This is like a homesteading manual! It has sections on animals, including wild, domesticated, and livestock; cooking, general, breads, dairy, meats, preserving (includes canning, pickling, distilling); crafts for home, fpm nature, for gifts and decorations; gardening, general, flowers, vegetables, fruits, herbs, and specialty, also landscaping; health for beauty, home remedies, including recipes and elixirs; home DIY's for inside and outside; hardiness zone maps for gardening, pest-proofing, and even buying land in the country. Each major section of the book has darkened side panels, so one can easily navigate the plethora of information. Also, there are lots of illustrations to help those of us who are more visual in our learning abilities.
I bought mine from Amazon. Their packaging was terrible! I ordered 2 and both arrived torn on the edges (yes, this is a paperback). However, it was so good and comprehensive, I ordered the survival book in this series (Survival Wisdom and Know-How), and I'll probably order others in the future. I seriously think it's worth it.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 12, 2024The book's subject matter is excellent and covers many topics. A previous edition of this book had 480 pages with very tiny print that was difficult to read, and it measured almost 14 x 11 inches and about 1 inch thick - too big for a typical bookshelf. This newer edition has been changed to 8 x 10 inches and 2 inches thick with 1,061 pages - same content, better for the bookshelf, but still with the same size font - 7 lines of print per vertical inch (see photo). Lots of good information, but you'll need a magnifying glass to read it.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 22, 2013This book is amazing!! I had been looking for a book like this for months and when it came in the mail I could not believe the size of it. It is HUGE!!! I could not put this book down, in fact I carried it with me for a couple of weeks so that at any spare moment I could look inside it. This is a cool book just to have around, I have shown it to several people 2 of which have went out and bought it!! This book is not as "survival of the outdoors" as it sounds, it is full ideas and facts. Ranging from how to make curtains, can food, cut and stack wood, skin and butcher meat, make rugs, build furniture... my personal favorite-> how to potty train your cat on the toilet!! There are recipes for food, tonics, animal medicine, and aromatherapy. I want to break it down and tell you but there are just too many things in here to try.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 20, 2023Tons of useful information. More than I thought. From raising live stock to building a home. Gardening and land rights and recipes. My only complaint is the extremely small type. Need plenty of light and a magnifying glass.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 25, 2007This is such a wonderful little book! Well, it's hardly little, but given that you *really could* live off the land based on the information inside, it's awfully condense. It contains information on everything from homeopathic remedies for minor health ailments to very, ahem, thorough instructions on how to kill livestock to making a scratching post for your cat! I received this as a graduation present from my favorite old hippie in the whole wide world, and I will keep it forever. It has already served me well troubleshooting my vegetable garden's pests, and I am confident that it will be an invaluable resource when I finally do get some space in the country. This book is a MUST HAVE for anyone who is sustainability-minded or just simply laments that their city upbringing has left them a bit less mindful of the Way Things Work than they would like.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 1, 2019The book is large and the print is small - and there is no wasted space. This book is literally packed with information. Very pleased with this purchase. Lots of info on herbals too so that was a nice bonus. I love the practicality. I have another country living book that I don't really reference at all because it is rambling and disorganized. This book seems spot on.

5.0 out of 5 stars Maravilhoso
Livro surpreendente! Muita informação, ilustrações! Essencial para quem gosta de vida simples e contato com a natureza.
Só as letras achei pequenas. Mas vale muito a pena! Um super compêndio!

5.0 out of 5 stars Unbelievable amount of knowledge for so little money!
This is a great compendium of knowledge and for around 10 quid delivered, you can't beat it. The person who wrote the review about the low quality is obviously a fool! The paper is thin, but there's that much stuff to fit into one book that it would be even thicker- they also complained that it's too big! Yes it's big and what is the problem reading a book at the table? I've found some real treasures of information in this book and would recommend it to anyone with an interest in escaping the world of idiots and becoming a hermit!

5.0 out of 5 stars 6 or 7 Books in One
Country Wisdom really deserves like 30 stars– one for every book included. (And for this reason, it should be more expensive than it is, really).
Okay, so I'm exaggerating a bit. But not much. There is SO much information here, you'l never get to it all. It's a country cook book, a book on bee keeping, a DIY book house/cabin construction, vegetable gardening, raising fowl, keeping/ training pets, preparing medicinal herbs, basket weaving, soap making, etc. etc. etc. The list is endless.
As I understand it, this is basically the compilation of hundreds of books/newsletters published as a series by some hippy-farmers back in the 1970s. But don't be turned off by this, the knowledge is timeless and not dated in the least.
It's printed in newsprint in an oversized format (like a Sunday paper), with loads of visual diagrams and written with very clear, easy too read - and often humorous - instructions.
Think 'Cook's Illustrated', but for homesteading.
Highly recommended if you're an a beginner, or even expert, homesteader. Will definitely be ordering more as gifts around Christmas time.
