The key to the doctrine of the Trinity is the combination of transcendence and personality in the biblical portrayal of God. This idea is traced through Old Testament, New Testament, the Church Fathers, medieval scholasticism, the Reformation and early modern theology, and three 20th century theologians (Barth, Pannenberg, and Macquarrie).

About the Author

Christopher B. Kaiser is Professor of Historical and Systematic Theology at Western Theological Seminary in Holland, Michigan, where he has taught since 1976. He has a doctorate in Astro Geophysics from the University of Colorado and a doctorate in Theology from the University of Edinburgh. He has published and taught courses in both physics and theology. Chris has written two other books: Creation and the History of Science (1992), and Creational Theology and the History of Physical Science (1997). The first of these was awarded a Templeton Prize for Outstanding Books in Science and Religion in 1995. Chris is active in several organizations devoted to the dialogue among Christian traditions and the dialogue between science and theology. He approaches the subject as one raised in a scientific environment and yet amazed by the power of the biblical story. He and his wife Martha have three growing sons.

He has been part of the faculty of Western Theological Seminary (Holland, MI)since 1976 (Emeritus since 2012) and has also taught at the University of Edinburgh, Calvin Theological Seminary, and the Reformed Theological Academy in Sárospatak, Hungary. Dr. Kaiser has written five books: The Doctrine of God (1982, 2001), Creation and the History of Science (1991), Creational Theology and the History of Physical Science (1997), Toward a Theology of Scientific Endeavour (2007), Seeing the Lord's Glory (2014). Dr. Kaiser has served on both the Orthodox-Reformed Dialogue of the World Communion of Reformed Churches, the West Michigan Committee for Jewish-Christian dialogue, and the Dialogue in Science and Religion for the Greater Grand Rapids Area. His wife Martha is a retired primary school teacher and reading facilitator who now works as a consultant. Chris and Martha have three sons and three grandchildren.
