Product Description
From america's scenic rail journeys, these unforgettable trips explore america's last frontier, including the glacier bays of seward, fairbanks' gold rush country and mt. Mckinley.
Amazon.com
Alaska residents refer to their state as "the last frontier," and for good reason. The Alaska Railroad takes tourists through areas of the state where it's unlikely that human feet have ever trod. A whole different way of life exists in Alaska, one suited for those self-reliant types willing to turn their backs on much of the rest of society and tough it out through the brutally cold winters and remote locales. En route from Anchorage to Seward, Alaska Railroad passengers will see the Turnagain Arm, a spectacular ocean cove accessible only by rail, as well as glaciers, killer whales, and sea lions at Resurrection Bay. The second leg of the tour goes to Fairbanks, taking sightseers to Talkeetna, the model for the TV show Northern Exposure; Mount McKinley; and Denali National Park. Those willing to make the trip will be rewarded with dramatic scenery unlike anything in the lower 48, and it's a journey that few would be likely to forget. For the residents of the area, the ARR provides local passenger service and is a lifeline for those along the track, dropping off supplies and taking residents to towns where they can stock up on provisions. Loaded with archival railroad footage and interviews with Alaska residents, The Great Alaska Train Adventure is a fascinating look at the northernmost state, one that should hit home for railroad fans and the travel-minded alike. --Jerry Renshaw

- Reviewed in the United States on July 12, 2013I thoroughly enjoyed this travelogue video! Very well-written and produced, it takes you on the two main segments of the Alaska Railroad, and it's the next best thing to actually being there! Having been to Alaska and traveled from Anchorage to the Kenai Peninsula and to Fairbanks by way of Denali, watching this made me want to return to Alaska as soon as I can. For those planning a trip to Alaska, this video provides lots of ideas and information to guide your trip planning. Highly recommend!!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 11, 2020What a great history of RR in Alaska that still run to this day while others have halted ..
I really enjoyed it a lot ..
- Reviewed in the United States on December 27, 2016Bought this video for father in law who always wanted to tour Alaska by train. He enjoyed this video very much and said it was well narrated and the photography was great. (He is 92, so please take that into consideration).
- Reviewed in the United States on February 6, 2015One of the better Alaska videos out there. Great scenery, excellent photography, and much human interest. I have been on each of these train trips multiple times, and it never gets old. The video is in the older 4:3 format instead of the modern HDTV 16:9 format, but don't let that stop you.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 9, 2005I have quite a few American vhs and dvd video, I did not know
that Alaska had such scenery, I live in New Zealand, and our country
has pretty teriffic scenery, but I was most impressed after
watching the dvd, it was very clear and well filmed, and all
the people are so friendly, a bit like my own country.
Thankyou,Regards,

- Reviewed in the United States on January 13, 2017This is more of a tourism video of Alaska. If that's what your looking for then this is your DVD.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 27, 2015I used this as a social studies/geography lesson for homeschooling my 4th grade grandson. The photography was beautiful and gave him a good introduction to scenic Alaska. This was filmed over 15 years ago and was a little dated but did not detract from the scenery.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 9, 2012This is a good stand alone disc, but it is the first disc of America's scenic Rail Journeys which is a 2 disc, I was a little dissapionted when I went to play and found I had doubled up with that disc.
