- Reviewed in the United States on October 7, 2019If you want to laugh and cry watching the many ups and downs the author experienced in the last year of her life, this is the book for you. Her voice is strong, funny, and interesting. You go in knowing she has a fatal disease and watch her live life to the fullest in spite of it. I cried a lot. I will read it again and cry some more. She was an amazing writer.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 19, 2013At the very young age of 33 years old, Darcy Wakefield was diagnosed with ALS. She had a career she loved, had decided to have a baby (with or without the man of her dreams), and had just met the man who could be the one. As everything was falling into place, her world crumbled. However, she wasn't willing to give up that easily and this story is how she spent the next year living a "fast-forward life".
Having been diagnosed with ALS at 42 myself, I could really relate to her personal feelings of frustration and sadness and anger with the things she couldn't control. When she talked about the leg brace and how hard it was for her to accept that she needed it until the constant falls became too much, I totally got that on a very personal level.
Her story is inspiring, heartfelt, and bittersweet and I thoroughly appreciated hearing it in her own words. I would recommend this to anyone who has ALS, or knows someone who does, and anyone else who wants to read about an inspiring year in a young woman's life.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 5, 2013Is it the best written book I've read? No. Does it give a name and face to an awful illness? Absolutely. I have a friend recently diagnosed with ALS so any insight into how it will affect my friend's life is helpful. Read this book. Learn about this awful disease....and then help us fight it.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 19, 2006This is very well written and so easy to read. In fact, it was hard to put down. Anyone who knows anyone struggling with ALS or any progressive, debilitating disease, will be able to identify easily with her and get a lot out of this. And everyone else will get incredible insights into what life is like dealing with a disease like this, as we live through the human day-to-day struggles right along with her, through her touching stories. And far from being depressing or heavy, this book is very inspirational and uplifting, and it shows the very best in the human spirit. I highly recommend this, it is very worthwhile reading.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 5, 2014I cried, It was a very touching book and I respect anybody that has ALS and the hardships that they have to go through. A very powerful and moving book and it will touch your soul.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 17, 2023Very unrealistic and un-thoughtful.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 19, 2017Loved, loved loved this book Amazing story of an amazing woman
- Reviewed in the United States on May 8, 2018I also have ALS so I can identify with most of the things that the author experienced. I too was very athletic before my diagnosis. However, as a Christian, I was offended by some of her choices and overall atheistic approach to life. While her story is interesting, I did not find it to be inspiring.
