Purchase options and add-ons

The tragedy of Oedipus, who unknowingly slays his father and marries his mother, is one of the mythical cornerstones of Western civilization. Nicholas Rudall's new translation remains true to Sophocles original text while fashioning a language of grace and power, with contemporary players and theatergoers in mind.

    Excellent play.

    Perfect!

Who doesn't know the story of Oedipus? Rating this book, centuries after it has been written, is obtuse. This book is all about the translation. It's even more simplified than... any other I have seen. I used it in my classroom in the beginning of the year, to introduce kids to Greek Theatre. The oral CD reading of it is very dramatic... but this translation is so simple and weak. It's difficult to swallow if you are over the age of 16.

This is a very simple translation, but I found it to have value due to it's accessibility. It's not so poetic, but if you're looking for basic reading of the story without having to wade through a lot of archaic language, this is your translation!

i had read another customer review that said the text was jumbled and difficult to read. The sample was too short to tell.
