- Reviewed in the United States on September 7, 2002Well-written, well-organized and enjoyable to read, this outstanding genealogical research tool provides an excellent in-depth, insightful, integrated approach to genealogical research, particularly focused on researching our female family members. It contains a good explanation of means of tracing women when their surnames have changed, and very extensive bibliographies that are exhaustively research sources on women's property rights, childbearing and women's health care.
It sets out a well-explained technique of developing, writing and preserving one's family story as an organized historical narrative, with all the information one has obtained, so that the information paints a family's portrait(s), gives meaning to facts, organizes the source materials logically, and helps to tell the family who they are, why they are the way they are, and where they came from so that the family's history is preserved. This aspect of the book provides a much needed explanation to "weekend" genealogists on how to handle and develop their research results to make sense of them and to preserve the meaning of them.
This is a thoroughly analyzed and helpful book. I have given copies of this book to several people as it responds to research needs at several levels: genealogy, women's rights and issues (property, health, probate/will), family history interests, research skills, even personal journaling and self-discovery through family discovery.
Sharon DeBartolo Carmack has an outstanding ability to teach, and I hope she will continue to expand on her collection of genealogy research books.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 28, 2024When I received this book and started reading, I couldn’t stop and read it cover to cover. While this is a 1998 publication, I was finding excellent strategies and examples useful now for tracing female ancestors. The writing in this well-organized book is clear, concise, and enjoyable to read. The research strategies are understandable and practical. It's the best information I've found anywhere for help with tracing female ancestors. And now, I'm excited again, because on Amazon I see that Sharon has just published an updated and greatly expanded book on researching females called Telling Her Story: A Guide to Researching and Writing About Women of the Past. Now I can’t wait to get that book, as it also covers writing about women, and also has references to lots of online sources.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 19, 2022Although the book was written in 1998 and the information regarding the latest census is out of date, the rest of the information provided is still relative and useful for researching those ladies without a maiden name. Highly recommend!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 20, 2021I bought this book hoping for new information due to computer websites and companies devoted to genealogy. I was rather disappointed in this book. It's okay as far as it goes but there isn't much new information in it or at least not info that you can't figure out for yourself.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 30, 2012I loved this and much like my other reviews for the genealogy books I have been doing genealogy research for my and other families for other thirteen years so many of these books have repeat or already known info but this book offered those repeated tips and new information which was greatly appreciated.
I gave this a five also because if I had found this book when If first started it would have saved me YEARS off my research for many of my female ancestors because once you understand the system and get the tips and tricks you can really get a swing going at finding the females that seem to be "hiding"...
- Reviewed in the United States on June 22, 2021Sharon has done a fabulous job on this reference book. I would love to see an updated version of this book but the research methods and information are sound.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 7, 2023Really good book with great information on how and where to look for your female relatives from the past.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 15, 2017It's a really nice book. Clean and in great condition! It was delivered right on time. I am very pleased. Thank you!
