A haunting, evocative tale about the power of storytelling

A brutal civil war has ravaged the country, and contagious fevers have decimated the population. Abandoned farmhouses litter the isolated mountain valleys and shady hollows. The economy has been reduced to barter and trade.

In this craggy, unwelcoming world, the central character of
Scribe ekes out a lonely living on the family farmstead where she was raised and where her sister met an untimely end. She lets a migrant group known as the Uninvited set up temporary camps on her land, and maintains an uneasy peace with her cagey neighbors and the local enforcer. She has learned how to make paper and ink, and she has become known for her letter-writing skills, which she exchanges for tobacco, firewood, and other scarce resources. An unusual request for a letter from a man with hidden motivations unleashes the ghosts of her troubled past and sets off a series of increasingly calamitous events that culminate in a harrowing journey to a crossroads.

Drawing on traditional folktales and the history and culture of Appalachia, Alyson Hagy has crafted a gripping, swiftly plotted novel that touches on pressing issues of our time―migration, pandemic disease, the rise of authoritarianism―and makes a compelling case for the power of stories to both show us the world and transform it.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Scribe, which begins with the baying of hounds and ends with silence, reminds us on every page that humans remain the storytelling animal, and that therein might lie our salvation. . . . In this brave new world, a woman with a pen may prove mightier than a man with a sword.”The New York Times Book Review

“It’s a hungry book―one where every sentence seems to imply a second that it never offers; where every page and every paragraph offers the ghost of a feast, but never lets you eat.”
―NPR.org

“Fans of Fiona Mozley’s
Elmet will revel in this genre-busting feminist folktale of a novel, which is as rooted in its own particular, peculiar time as it is relevant to the concerns of 2018.”Vanity Fair

“[An] eerie, artfully etched post-apocalyptic tale.”
BBC Culture

“Though setting, identity and motivations are shrouded in Blue Ridge mist, Hagy’s language is intense and crisp. . . . Hagy does a splendid job of intertwining the strange threads in her novel, and readers with a taste for magical doings will not be disappointed.”
Star Tribune (Minneapolis)

“Rooted in [Hagy’s] Appalachia and yet otherworldly, bound by symbols and held just slightly out of time,
Scribe is a storyteller’s book about the radical power and responsibility of words.”The Millions

“An original addition to the post-apocalyptic genre, Scribe reaffirms the power of the pen and the surviving quality of the human spirit.”
The Arkansas International

“A slim and affecting powerhouse. . . . Hagy is a careful writer; each sentence feels as solid and sturdy as stone. . . . Timely and timeless; a deft novel about the consequences and resilience of storytelling.”
Kirkus Reviews, starred review

“Hagy probes the weight of responsibility and the desperation of survival in a deteriorated society in this evocative, opaque tale. . . . The vagueness of setting, supernatural elements, and only partially revealed histories amp up the eeriness of this disquieting novel.”
Publishers Weekly

“More than a novel. . . . [
Scribe] defies the hush of a dying world with every breathtaking sentence.”―Hérnan Díaz

“Alyson Hagy has written a lyrical, unsettling novel―part ghost story, part mystery, part love story, and thoroughly, jarringly, original.”
―Elizabeth Crook

I was raised in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia and currently live at the foot of the Laramie Mountains in Wyoming. I come from a storytelling culture, and I am drawn to how Americans, especially people who live in hard-to-live places, weave stories around their failures and successes. The Outer Banks of North Carolina, the hills of Virginia, the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, the crags and plains of Wyoming--these are all filled with stories for me, filled with striving and loss and survival.

Scribe is among the great novels that burn themselves into the sky of the inner life like an unforeseen constellation: this stellar masterpiece places it’s fire in you by generating in our shared humanity greater humility, greater desire to ask forgiveness and make atonement, greater discernment over the ills of Empire, greater mercy, and finally the kind of multivalent and transcendent love that has healed people from the beginning of time. Thank you for your rare gift Alyson Hagy... for this novel that is not only a miracle in prose but a miracle of courage for the human heart. Your talent blesses the nation. Your quiet fierce art changes us forever.

Readers if you want a novel that will leave you speechless with gratitude, challenge the fearsome landscape of the soul, and call you toward uncommon dignity, Scribe is the novel for you. Haunting. Containing inviolable truths. Harmonious in its seemless understanding of grace in the midst of cold fate. Ultimate in its profound sense of mercy.

    Scribe.

I loved this folk tale, fairy tale, whatever it was. It was engrossing, magical, lyrical, and a pleasure to read just for the writing. However, it's not a proper novel; way too short for that. It should be described as a novella and priced accordingly.

This is a book that is like a song, or like a true fairy tale, not yet settled enough into our collective cultural psyche that the magic seems settled or predictable. This is a very good book, a great work of American fiction & a portrait of a mystical Appalachia in a world different than our own. Beautifully written.

kimbacaffeinate's review above gives a nice summary of the plot in this book without giving away too much. Ms. Hagy's writing is intriguing. Her descriptions of the main character's circumstances and nature are quite evocative. The dialogue is terrific and often moving. There is an underlying tension and sense of dread as the story proceeds. Would have given it 4 stars except the venturing into the mystical, supernatural, etc. is a bit too "woo woo" at times and should have been toned down. Still, it kept my interest to the end and I hope to explore Ms. Hagy's other books.

I found a lot to not like about this book. First, for the $14 price this book of only 157 pages is not worth it. Seldom do I not finish a book I've purchased but with this one I gave up after 40 pages. Another review here sounds great & one from a book store I read, even the 1st several pages I found interesting but I just could not get into the story. It is written so vaguely, all situations are just hinted at, past & present, not explained, at least as far as I read. Even the time period is not clear, is it after the real Civil War or set in in some future time? Same with the main character, the scribe, who is even not named & I did not find her likable or admirable. On the other hand, the sex was too graphic. Perhaps if I'd read further in this book it might have redeemed itself somehow but having to force ones self to do this hoping the book will improve is not my sort of book.

So much left unexplained. Unsympathetic characters. I would have like more about the scribe theme.

Not a book I’d ordinarily have picked for myself but I found out about it from Belletrist and I do not regret it. It’s so different from any book I’ve ever read before so do give it a try if you’re feeling adventurous.
