The New Beachcomber's Guide to the Pacific Northwest Paperback – June 25, 2019
The Pacific Northwest coast is home to one of the most diverse displays of intertidal marine life in the world, including sponges, clams, snails, crabs, sea stars, sea anemones, jellies, fishes, seaweeds and more. The New Beachcomber’s Guide to the Pacific Northwest is a portable and easy-to-use reference for searching out and identifying the hundreds of species of seashore life found on the beaches of British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, Northern California and Southeast Alaska.
Covering the Pacific Northwest’s most common shoreline-dwelling flora and fauna, the guide gives in each entry a detailed description of appearance and habitat accompanied by colour photos for easy identification of any creature you might encounter as you explore your local beach. Simple but essential information on tides and the various habitats within the intertidal zones is also provided to assist beachcombers in exploring safely with minimal ecological impact. The New Beachcomber’s Guide even contains up-to-date descriptions of the best beachcombing sites and when to visit them―you may even find your new favourite exploration grounds!
Thoroughly revised and packed with handy and accessible information, this guide belongs in the beach bag or backpack of any avid naturalist, amateur beachcomber or adventurous family.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 10, 2024Very comprehensive and lots of photos.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 13, 2021I have been a docent for US Fish and Wildlife and the BLM. Helping and educating folks learn about tide pools and the creatures and plants that are part of them. After using many guide books, I have to say that this has to be the best one out there.
Beautiful photos and great descriptions that are concise and well organized. I am very pleased to add this to my field guide collection. If you want one guide to know coastal plants and water animals, this is the one.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 15, 2025Came very quickly and in good condition:)
- Reviewed in the United States on July 1, 2020This updated guide is perfect. Great descriptions and pictures. Lots of information and many of the names have been updated to reflect the changes in taxonomy. I love that some pictures are what you'll actually SEE in the intertidal and not just want a pristine specimen looks like. Very helpful for identification. Great book, also a great gift for the sea lover.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 28, 2022I own the earlier edition and bought this to have the same copy as my students. It is well detailed, accurate and includes great photographs, habitat information, and best beach behavior advice.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 18, 2021I've tried several guides and this one is by far the most useful and informative one out there that can actually be taken into the intertidal. I love it.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 27, 2005This guide lived up to its name and was fairly useful. However, it could have used some more detail, and pictures of just the shells would have been helpful. In general, it is a good beginners book.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 2, 2021I bought this book for a marine biology class, but now I bring it to the beach whenever I go, and it really does help.
