Whether it's cramps, cancer, infertility, impotence, moodiness or menopause, Dr. Barnard masterfully navigates a clear path to your healthiest self."―KristiFunk, MD, FACS, breast cancer surgeon, co-founder of Pink Lotus BreastCenter, and bestselling author of Breasts: The Owner's Manual
"Dr. Neal Barnard is one of the most important authorities of our time on nutrition, diet, and health, and Your Body in Balance is the book that can and will finally change your health for good. Dr. Barnard walks us through the most common and troublesome ailments which so many of us struggle with: hormone fluctuations, thyroid conditions, chronic and terminal illness, and mood disorders-with an eye towards research and solutions based in foods commonly available to us. We have the power to heal our bodies with the foods we eat, and Your Body in Balance is the resource with the wisdom to get us there. With recipes included, this may just be the only book you need on your shelf in order to change your body, your health, and your life."―Mayim Bialik, PhD, neuroscientist and actor
"Finally, an intelligent guide book that speaks up about the potent role our hormones play in every aspect of our lives. As an Olympic athlete, I never really thought of this connection until I dropped all animal foods from my diet and turned to whole plant foods to fuel my training. Almost overnight, my adaptation to training sped up (which is a function of our immune system directed by hormones), my PMS subsided, my breakouts cleared up, and my ability to focus and calm my nerves greatly improved. Dr. Barnard takes the reader on a revealing journey to uncover what's really behind some of our most common physical ailments and how to fix them in the blink of an eye."―Dotsie Bausch, Olympic silver medalist, 8X U.S. National Champion, former worldrecord holder, 2x Pan American Gold, and founder of Switch4Good
"Your Body in Balance is an incredible resource. If you have ever wondered how the food you eat impacts your fertility, erectile function, thyroid function, skin, hair, and so much more, wonder no longer. This book shows us how the food we eat can literally change our hormones, our mood, and our health! Happy eating!"―Robert Ostfeld, MD, MSc, FACC, director ofPreventive Cardiology at Montefiore Health System in New York

About the author
Neal D. Barnard, M.D., is a nutrition researcher, author, and health advocate. As an adjunct associate professor of medicine at the George Washington University School of Medicine, Dr. Barnard conducts studies on the role of nutrition in diabetes, obesity, and lipid management, among other health issues. His most recent clinical trial, funded by the National Institutes of Health, established the value of a novel dietary program for type 2 diabetes and set a new standard for dietary approaches to this increasingly common condition.
Dr. Barnard’s articles have appeared in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, the American Journal of Medicine, the Journal of the American Dietetic Association, Scientific American, the American Journal of Cardiology, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Lancet Oncology, Preventive Medicine, and many other scientific and medical journals. Dr. Barnard is the editor-in-chief of the Nutrition Guide for Clinicians and the author of more than a dozen books for lay audiences.
In 1985, Dr. Barnard established the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, a nonprofit organization advocating for preventive medicine and higher ethical standards in research. He later established The Cancer Project, a nonprofit organization providing nutritional services for cancer patients and survivors and public education geared toward prevention, and the Washington Center for Clinical Research, an organization dedicated to studies of diet and health.
Growing up in Fargo, N.D., his extended family includes both doctors and cattle ranchers, two groups that are increasingly butting heads over America’s health policies. Dr. Barnard’s scientific approach aims to shed new light on these important issues.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 10, 2020When I first went vegan it was pre-social media, so you really did have to read-up on the literature or rely on vetted sources like going to see someone talk in person at university. Nowadays there are so many sources and it's so hard to trust what you randomly find online, especially around scientific outcomes for studies and how that relates to choices you make in everyday life. Still always good to see solid literature (although in digital, not paper form this time; technology!)
The book does a good job of making the science clear without being so simple that it's not convincing or helpful. There are some charts and whatnot, but the narratives help a lot for someone like me who is not a chemist, dietician, or nutritionist. Basically, I appreciate the straight forward stuff like "What about olive oil?" or salt, or soy, or what have you. The book addresses commonly held beliefs, whether they are accurate or not, and does well to show you why they are myths or just solidly held, accurate beliefs. As well as the evergreen questions like, should I really buy all organic, what about exercise, and all the other issues than I hear discussed almost daily weekly over the past 20 years of being vegan. The path to health is never a straight line; you have to continue to learn and adjust as time goes on. Glad folks are still helping us do that.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 6, 2020I have been a fan of Dr. Barnard’s books, because they are a good balance between simple scientific explanations and practical steps you can put to use. But Your Body in Balance hits a whole new level, and I think it is his best yet. Each chapter starts with vignettes of people who’ve dealt with health problems and describes what they did. Then, it shows how foods work in your body to correct the condition, followed by specific steps for putting it into practice. Dr. Barnard also describes the scientific research that led to these advances in just the right amount of detail. And if you want more info, he lists the scientific references.
The book is very encouraging, showing you how to change your diet to conquer health problems. But I have to say, I found myself getting angry that this information has not been out there before. On practically every page, I was thinking about how many friends had menstrual symptoms when they were young, hot flashes when they were older, weight problems, mood problems, a goofed up thyroid, and everything else, and no one ever figured out how to help them; I think this book will mark a turning point.
That said, Dr. Barnard does not really criticize the medical community and makes a point that medical care has important roles to play. But I honestly think that if doctors provided good nutrition advice, there would be much less need for medications, etc.
Anyway, I think this is a great resource, and I wish it had been available years ago.

In this book he goes into detail about how what we eat affects our health, in more ways than you'd expect. He covers some health conditions, nutrients/nutrition, and has plenty of examples of people who have improved their health through a healthy diet. Eating healthfully does not have to be expensive. Just consider how much money you will save when you stop buying meat and dairy products. I'm definitely looking for a more economical way of eating as well as it being much healthier. This book is very interesting to read and gives you a good amount of information as a background for your healthful journey. I would like to drop off a copy of Dr. Barnard's books for my doctor and nutritionist!

- Reviewed in the United States on February 7, 2020I highly recommend this book. Dr. Barnard is amazing. I have read several of his books and seen many of his talks on YouTube. He bases his recommendations on solid medical research. Each chapter describes a different health condition and how to balance your hormones to correct it. The book is so wonderfully to easy read, and I like the examples of people who have done this.
I am guessing that most readers will skip straight to the section that applies to them. It’s not that long—it’s easy to get through it—and I am finding that each chapter has really amazing information, and similar themes came up and built on each other. For example, the same foods that lead to infertility are also a problem for cramps and endometriosis, and even set a woman up for hot flashes later. If you just read one chapter, you’ll miss all that great stuff.
Dr. Barnard makes science entertaining and also practical. What an excellent book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Práctico para tu salud, fácil de leer :)
Recomendable 100%.

The author will tell you what he can back up with references and he will also tell you when he is just expressing an opinion, this approach is unusual and very refreshing. I have adjusted my diet based on this book.
