For the first time in her life, Lisa Sharon Belkin thought her quest for thinness was over. After a lifetime of dieting and obesity, with a highest weight of 393 pounds, she lost over 165 pounds in the first few years after bariatric surgery. But sugar and bad carbs made their way back into her life and regain started to happen. She had to find a way out, so after a regain of 35 pounds, she committed to developing recipes that would help her lose the regained weight and keep her on the right track. She lost the 35 pounds using the recipes she developed.

Regain is a dirty secret in the bariatric community that is experienced by many. The reason for this, according to the author, is that, "We have not learned to prepare our foods properly for our situation and we continue to eat 'bad and junky' foods that just make us super hungry." This full-colour cookbook/educational tool addresses the realities of bariatric surgery and offers a solution: bariatric-friendly foods that are delicious and nutritious and that will keep post-ops on track for life.

"[Surgery] is only a tool and to be successful we still have to put a great effort into it."

Lisa discusses her personal journey and discoveries along the way during her research for this book, and shares her collection of over 90 delicious, healthy comfort food favourites, specifically designed for weight-loss surgery post-ops. The recipes are developed to deliver optimum flavour while keeping them low carb and reduced fat. Written from one bariatric post-op to another, this book is a must-have for bariatric post-ops who are struggling with weight regain, for post-ops who want to stop the regain before it happens, and for anyone else who wants to cut down on carbs and sugar with no compromise to taste and texture.

About the Author

Born in Winnipeg, Canada, Lisa Sharon Belkin grew up in an artistic household. Both of her parents were members of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, and the family environment was heavily focused on music and the visual arts. Ms. Belkin is a teacher by profession and an accomplished sculptor, painter and author. Three years after her bariatric surgery, she found herself making bad choices and the foods that grew her to almost 400 pounds began creeping back into her life. She belongs to several bariatric support groups and is closely connected to many post-ops who are struggling with their food choices and are facing weight regain. With Comfort Cooking for Bariatric Post-Ops and Everyone Else!, Lisa's goal is two-fold: to help others who are struggling to be successful after bariatric surgery and to increase awareness that surgery is not an easy way out. Her last book, The Cosmetics Cookbook (available on Amazon), was on Canadian bookstore McNally Robinson's bestsellers list in 1998. Numerous recipes and beauty tips from the book were featured in the popular American magazine Woman's World and several Canadian publications. Ms. Belkin graduated from the University of Manitoba with degrees in both Education and Counselling. She currently resides in Saskatoon, Canada, with her partner, Randy, and their two cats, Ozzie and Tigger.

First, I was moved by the author’s personal story of obesity, bariatric surgery, 160 lb weight loss, and her determination to stop the regain she was experiencing. Bariatric surgery changes the person’s body, but not the brain – it still wants what it wants. From her own experience, the author describes how her brain continued to be defenseless against cravings and overeating, leading to regain. She describes how she found a way to “have her cake and eat it too” by inventing a cooking approach and using ingredient substitutes to prepare her favorite comfort foods (like meatloaf, mashed “potatoes” and gravy) that also insulated her brain from the sabotage brought on by traditional preparation and ingredients of these foods. I did not have bariatric surgery, but I was able to relate to the brain sabotage she talks about since I’ve been overweight my whole life. I’m excited about this book because it teaches how to prepare food that helps my brain while maintaining the important things in food like flavor, texture, mouth feel, etc. The ingredients and preparation methods of every recipe in the book make sense to me. I think diabetics or people with gluten sensitivities will also love this book. The pictures of the food are very enticing! All and all a really fresh approach to making comfort foods without the uncomfortable consequences!

This is a good cookbook for low carb bariatric eating. The pictures aren't super pretty but it has them. Good recipes for yummy meals. Crepes, soups, some desserts, etc. Check this out if you need a lighter low carb recipe book with basic home recipes.

This book is well thought out, written and the pictures are easy to follow. I liked that the author knew what food addiction is and had shared personal experiences. The recipes were varied and addressed everything from birthdays to potluck. A keeper!

Just received my book today while going through it the recipes look fine but there is no serving size on a lot of her recipes... There's no information on Nutrition Facts...which really surprises me because you have to be very careful about how much you eat.... Very sad to see this was not added !!!!!!!!

Recipes look good, but I was surprised to see an effort put into a book with no nutritionals!
