"You hit the ball outta the park on that book!!Very, very nice work!! It took me to the rig and I re-lived the days I was there through your stories." Mike Glendenning - Deepwater Horizon Survivor
"I'm still speechless and with tears in my eyes. The way Greg told the story takes me to a rig I had never physically been to,but seems like I had been there for years. I met people I have never met, down to the last description of them." Angel Carranza - HSE Advisor
"It was great and with a human interest touch with the people that where on the rig that night and the people that have been part of the Horizon and worked on her since it was built." Carl Taylor - Deepwater Horizon Survivor
"It was a great read in telling the truth of how we were as one family, one team driving for the same goal and blowing it out of the water every time when we had a challenge." Randy Harris - Former Haliburton Service Engineer assigned to the Deepwater Horizon
From the Author
From the Inside Flap
People have formulated their own ideas about the accident, the offshore oil and gas industry, and the rig itself. Many of those notions may have been influenced by televised images, "talking heads" on various media offering opinion and conjecture, and the movie, Deepwater Horizon, a movie held in derision as "distorted fabrications"by those who worked and walked those decks for Horizon's ten years of operation.
I have undertaken this book project to tell readers the real story. It is a story of an industrious team of people who routinely made the impossible possible, by pushing boundaries and the limits of their equipment, never turning away from a challenge. In the 1990s-2000s, oil and gas exploration companies were making huge "plays" in the Gulf of Mexico, especially in deepwater, and the Deepwater Horizon and her crews were right in the thick of these discoveries.
From the construction of the rig in Ulsan, South Korea, this book chronicles the Deepwater Horizon's amazing discoveries and records that spanned the course of a decade. The Horizon crew pushed limits reaching depths the world had never before seen; depths people didn't even think possible only five years before they punched through! With advances in technology and skilled personnel, the Deepwater Horizon led the field in performance for the Transocean fleet, so much so that Transocean Rig Managers sent people to see what we were doing on the Horizon that made us so good.
In this book, I provide a historical perspective of oil, the evolution of offshore drilling, and the shaping forces behind exploration, discovery, and development that have pushed offshore drilling into deeper waters in its quest for energy beneath the seabed. I also examine the economics of the gas and oil industry, and the shortage of trained personnel needed to fill positions on these drilling units which cost more than one-half billion dollars each.
Lastly, I take readers on a whirlwind tour of the companies, mergers, and oversight organizations that created the multi-faceted dynamic at the time of the incident in 2010.
Learning hands-on at the coal face, from Floorhand to Driller, I not only try to explain offshore drilling in lay terms, I also share stories of the people and the rig we operated. These stories are where I hope the reader sees those who worked this rig as real people, the humor, fears, the dangers, the mundane, the thrills, the joys, the conditions, and eventually, the pain experienced by the survivors and the families, indeed the collective heartache of the entire Deepwater Horizon family. One chapter provides a unique perspective of the incident--first-hand accounts from those aboard the rig that night and others who provided direct support.
These are their words. Their stories. All heroes.
Right after a major discovery, I left Deepwater Horizon as a Driller in 2008, after over seven yearsaboard. It was my final time as part of the Horizon crew as Transocean reassigned me to a special project that would have aided deepwater Drillers everywhere. This new technology was eventually test-proven and targeted to be implemented on the Deepwater Horizon, one year before the rig moved to the fateful Macondo well. Because the industry had so over-expanded to where every offshore producer was suffering for more drilling rigs, the business decision was made not to implement this innovative technology that might have prevented the accident.
I want the truth to be known that the events that unfolded in April 2010 were one hundred percent avoidable. Notwithstanding the new technology, if the tools already in place--proper planning, in-depth engineering completed and reviewed by multiple people, and disciplined processes and approvals--were utilized, this tragedy at sea could have been avoided.
To those left behind, peace be with you. To "The Eleven",rest easy my friends.
From the Back Cover
"As I started reading this book it takes me into a journey where it brings smile, emotions (happy) and speaks the true life of an "Oilfield Worker" and as I flip through this life cycle (pages) it brings tears, emotions (sad) and journey of this life cycle of the "11 True Heroes" comes to an end.
Greg not only has taken time & efforts to make this book a life cycle of"Deepwater Horizon & 11 True Heroes" but also gives the message out to the readers "a true real story" of an oilfield worker and what it means to his family that can never be forgotten.
I salute the "11 Brave Heroes of Deepwater Horizon" who are in our hearts and I salute and thank Greg for taking this priceless effort, courage and hard work in writing this book and hope this "True Story" reaches out to each and everyone in our "small world of oilfield".

About the author

Writers love to seek great stories, but for author Greg Williams, the best tales have always found him. As a boy, the darkest hours of the night invariably brought visits from strange characters, or epic adventures to exotic locations. In the morning his hand would scribble across the page, documenting each vision before the morning light could snatch it away. As an adult, his curious nature led him to places like the Congo in West Africa, and a rewarding career in the oil and gas industry, where Williams manages deep sea drilling crews of 140 members that span sixteen nationalities. Working in remote locations and high-risk scenarios, Williams has witnessed humanity at its best and most courageous, discussing the industry in his non-fiction work Deepwater Horizon—In the Moment. But it was his early connection to dreams that launched a lifelong passion for Sci-fi, which has culminated in the epic novel Exium which will be released at a later date on trade paperback.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 30, 2017“Our Horizon: In The Moment” is a captivating verbal portrait of the real people who crewed the Deepwater Horizon. As well as being a true story about the real people who fought to save the rig that fateful day on April 2010, it is also the real story of the offshore drilling industry and the people who passionately dedicate their lives to it.
This book brings to life some of the characters and personalities of the true heroes of the Deepwater Horizon disaster.
Getting a glimpse into the personalities of the people who were on the drillfloor of the Deepwater Horizon at the time of the catastrophic blowout is a sober reminder of the human toll of this disaster, not just the financial one. By the end of this book you will feel like you have met each of the victims in person. You will be moved when you read the stories of the grieving loved ones left behind as they try to come to terms with the senseless loss.
Anyone who already works on a rig and is reading this book will immediately relate to the personalities and relationships described in it. It is so believably honest and real you will feel like you know all of the characters by the time you finish reading it. In some places it’s all too real…. and emotionally draining to read.
For a driller, the author is a bloody good writer, which is just as well, or we would never have had the chance to read about the REAL people of the Deepwater Horizon.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 15, 2017Thanks Greg! This book is a great reminder of the guys I worked with for around 8 1/2 years! You were true to their character and the world should know how these 11 men were really good men and the Horizon was all FAMILY...... I recommend this book to everyone who has loved ones in the oilfield.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 26, 2017I brought the Horizon from Korea to the GOM as a driller and remained on her until 2003. The rig was one of the best I have ever worked on in my 32 year career. Her crews were second to none. They were all hard working, professionals doing absolutely the best job they could. From the highest ranking to the lowest ranking, if you needed a hand or help with anything, help was there by way of the tight knit family. Too many times I have ad to 'defend' the Horizon men because someone was spouting off about "they should have done this", they should have done that", "they were dummies". I shut down a senior supervisor on a rig one night speaking about the "lack of knowledge" by the supervisors...When I got through with him, he understood the level of knowledge and skill that was on the rig floor that night...and apologized for his comment. Greg has written this story as it should be written, factual and with plenty of first hand accounts. He gives the not so knowledgeable in oilfield ways enough information to understand what is happening, and the people like myself who personally knew at least 5 of the men who were lost an excellent view of the events. God Bless the Eleven and may God be with their families! I am looking forward to the documentary.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 8, 2017This book was moving! Telling! Greg Williams told about being involved in a project to make offshore drilling safer and more efficient, technology that could have saved Horizon and the lives lost. He went on to talk about how the survivors were treated after their rescue, and quite honestly, that made me angrier than I have ever been in my 56 years on this earth! He introduced these real life people to us, the readers, and put a real life, nonfictional face on them, and those folks are people that an average person like me could like, and grieve for their passing. At times, I did get bogged down by the technical workings of oil drilling that is way over my head, but when I finished reading the book, I was so glad I read it! I was glad I have not yet seen the movie, and if I ever do, I can do so with the knowledge this book provides in my mind, heart, and soul.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 24, 2021I used this book to remind myself of safety issues at home, even though I'm retired now!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 10, 2017Greg Williams did an outstanding job on writing this book. Easy to follow even if you don't know anything about the oilfield.
I am very picky when it comes to this tragedy because my husband was the crane operator who did not make it out. This was finally a story that helped me and not set me back in my grieving process. I am only allowed to give him 5 stars but he deserves 10. He was able to tell this tragic story and also help you get to know "The Eleven" as the good men they were. This book was very respectful when certain things were mentioned and that THAT alone makes it so much better than the other books that have been written about this tragedy.
Bless you Greg Williams you helped me to remember to be thankful for having known my husband and his one in a million personality!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great book, unfortunately missing something important
I'm happy that I decided to read this book. It achives its stated intent - to make live on the DW Horizon accessible, to bring the people back to live (so to say). The author transfers his emotions and the things important to him, like optimizing the work process and safety of the rig. In addition we get a lot of historic context and some small insight into many many topics that come up around rig development, rig manufacturing and rig operations. Really a great introduction to the entire topic. And of course it is impossible not to be affected by the emotions triggered by the loss of the good people, the loss of the great machine, the home away from home for those (not just) working there. I know how it is to have been part of such great company and yes, the feelings when you finally get out are very well reported.
What the book unfortunately completely fails to deliver is any information about what really went down, what caused the accident. The author complains that the movie did not tell the truth. Well, I would have taken the truth from the book and trusted it more than other sources. But the only factual information given is a report that the blowout preventer rams was retrieved with closed rams, the pipe sheared. That's in contradiction to all other reports I have ever read, but there is no explanation about how the hydrocabons made it topside through a closed pipe or anything else. So while the author is certainly extremely knowledgable there are absolutely no words about what really happened.
And I must add that unfortunately I have the impression that the book does not fully recognize the damage that this desaster did to the environment. While the losses to the oil industry, its workers and owners are listed and moaned right down to the increase in insurance fees there is no recognition of any guilt. Going by this book everybody did everything right, everything was well thought out. Criticism is only pointed at the handling of the survivors and the families of those lost in the accident. Which I also find unbelievable cruel.
But do not let this stop you to buy this book. It is authentic, detailed, well written and very informative. On top of that it does justice to those who are mostly ignored by the media.
