Editorial Reviews
From the Author
I wrote this book because of how overwhelmed my patients and their families seemed to be by the diagnosis of cancer. Cancer is such a big and complicated topic, it's hard for a lot of doctors to get a handle on it, let alone people without medical training. I hope this book will help you get a basic understanding of the disease and how it is treated. Most importantly, I want the knowledge you gain here to help you become the best possible advocate for yourself (if you are the cancer patient) or your loved one (if cancer has struck a friend or family member).

- Reviewed in the United States on September 4, 2017Especially for families facing a cancer diagnosis but also for those of us not yet having to deal with the big "C", this a comprehensive and very readable introduction. Dr Howard emphasizes the critical role patients can play in helping their doctors do better for them.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 27, 2017With care, honesty, and the right amount of both humility and humor, Dr. Andrew Howard has written an accessible, informative, well-organized book for patients and their loved ones.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 17, 2017For anyone wading into the murky medical waters of cancer, whether patient, family, or friend, this book will help clear your way.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 22, 2017This book has a bit of humor to cover the basics about cancer and treatments. It would've been nice to have sample questions to ask your doctor or checklists to help prepare cancer patients or their family members but it's a good start if someone just received a cancer diagnosis.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 7, 2017I found this book online and it really has made a difference. This is the book that will tell you everything that you need to know about what cancer is, how it works, how you treat it, and how you deal with everything else. It is simple, to the point, and informative (you will learn a lot from any page and it actually will make you laugh -- not easy for a cancer book). This is written by a doctor but it's written from the patient's point of view --- the author doesn't bore you with things you don't need to know, but he does explain all those terms and concepts that you must understand. A big part of cancer is the fear of the unknown, this book will do a lot to take that fear away. I'm so glad I read this.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 19, 2018As the son of a man who very quickly died of cancer, I wish I would have had this resource to have helped me both to help him and to understand for myself what was going on. Written in a very clear style, with Andy's characteristic humor, this will give any patients or even just people interested in how cancer and it's treatment work, are rated, and other puzzling questions about cancer, a good foundation for starting to understand these and other issues. I highly recommend this book to anyone at all!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 28, 2017As someone who was recently diagnosed with lymphoma, I found Dr. Howard's book to be quite informative. He wrote in a format so that a layperson could understand. I agreed with his premise that one needs to be a strong advocate for themselves. In seeking treatment I am following his advice in seeking out a doctor/clinic that is part of a major teaching hospital.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 20, 2017If you or a loved one has cancer, READ THIS . Short & empowering. Dr. Howard is honest and uplifting at once. A terrific read at a tough time!
