About the author

Josh Luke, Ph.D., is a motivational speaker, acclaimed internationally for his educational, motivational and humorous presentations. He is a social media influencer and podcast host.
In each of these books, you will read Josh’s story about the exact moment he made the decision to dedicate his time and energies to serving in the health care sector, rapidly rising through the ranks of health care administration, and becoming one of the country’s youngest hospital CEOs by the age of 32. There simply is no one else with the vast knowledge and experience necessary to author this book, and provide critical information to those seeking care for their loved one, be it an aging parent, or simply caring for a child.
After learning in 2010 of his own mother’s diagnosis with Alzheimer’s disease at age 65, a time when most American’s begin to consider retirement and their golden years, Josh became a vocal advocate for Alzheimer’s research, care delivery transformation and later as a price transparency advocate and became known as America's Healthcare Affordability Authority.
Dr. Luke designed healthcare course work for the University of Southern California’s Sol Price School of Public Policy. His personal website at DrJoshLuke offers tools for companies and individuals to reduce healthcare spending, as well as educational materials for healthcare professionals.

5.0 out of 5 stars ‘ObamaCare may be dead, but Americans need for access to affordable care is not.’
California author Josh Luke, PhD is an inspiration to us all. His contribution to whole health began action by the declining health and onset of Alzheimer's disease of both his maternal and paternal grandmothers. Moving from one successful career he moved into the health care sector, rapidly rising through the ranks of health care administration, and becoming one of the country's youngest hospital CEOs by the age of 32. In addition to being a motivational speaker, acclaimed internationally for his educational, motivational and often humorous presentations he has a rich teaching history in public policy and Healthcare Administration at numerous universities, most recently designing healthcare course work for the University of Southern California's Sol Price School of Public Policy. He also dedicates time each year to being active in health care advocacy in our government.
This book is a guide to assist individuals in navigating through America’s complicated and expensive delivery system. Josh divides his book into two sections – ‘Part 1 outlines the incentives and motivations of America’s health care delivery system. The reader will gain a basic understanding of America’s inefficient delivery model and why their personal doctor may not always be financially incentivized to be truthful to them. Part 2 is a guide for navigating and accessing health care in the model of the future – and it may save you a few bucks in the long run as well.’
In this acerbic treatise Josh uncovers all those hidden flaws that taint American medicine but he does so in a manner that is not condemning but is edifying – how much doe s money affect health care delivery (money controls everything else in our lives!), hospital profitability, bundled programs, the EMR (electronic medical record blitz and physician/patient time versus insurance coding time), managed health care (HMO) long term care insurance, ACA and the single payer system, discharge form the hospital policies, and involving families and loved ones in the care of the ailing member of the unit.
The aspect of Josh’s book that makes it special is that he shares his own life experiences with each of the topics he addresses. Yes, the book is controversial, but that is the best way to create e much needed change in our health care system. Highly Recommended of all readers – in the medical field and outside the medical field. Grady Harp, January 19
- Reviewed in the United States on January 21, 2019“Ex-Acute” is a book written by a former hospital CEO about the American healthcare system. The author goes into great detail about how the American healthcare system has changed over the years, the impacts of the changes upon society, and what adult children need to consider when it comes to caring for seniors who are suffering from various medical issues.
The book is highly informative with explanations of technical terms. It also illustrates clearly to the reader the different aspects of the American healthcare system. Other than just sharing technical information, the author shares openly his personal life experiences and how his grandma had suffered under the flaws of the system in her fight against her cardiological conditions.
With populations living longer, more people are suffering from long-term medical conditions than ever before. It is, therefore, essential to understand the healthcare system so that we can better make plans to take care of our elders and ourselves in the future should we be faced with various medical conditions.
A highly informative book recommended to all medical students, readers interested in the healthcare industry, even if you don’t live in America, and also adult children who have a part in taking care of their aged parents and grandparents.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 11, 2018Every so often, someone recommends a book to you, and when you read it, you can’t thank them enough. This was my experience with Josh Luke’s Ex-cute 2017. Josh details the numerous things that are wrong with our Health Care system in the US and from an Insiders Position.
If you are currently enrolled in Medicare, Medicaid; soon will be or caring for a family member who is enrolled, this book is a MUST read. My wife is currently helping with managing the care of her 96 year old Mother. Over the past few years, she has moved from Independent Living to Assisted Living. She has also ended up moving to different facilities because significant rising costs, problems with the food being served, and the care she received.
Josh unrolls the various changes to our health care, and how the process has evolved from focus on patient care to focus on physician and facility Income. You really to know what is happening to protect yourself and your family.
A few years ago, I was being treated for a problem with my foot by the Head of Surgery at a major San Diego hospital. One day, he was talking about wanting to find the time to wrote a book on the affects of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) created by the people that developed. At first, he thought that there was the potential to have a process where health care was determined by doctors interacting with patients. However, he said that the biggest issue was that the Health Care Insurers were allowed to contribute and sort of worked with the hospitals and left the doctors out of the process. He said that he was concerned that doctors would end up being treated like Professional Football players. I jokingly said, “Oh you mean sign $70M contracts?” His reply was that, if you think about pro football players, they have no control over the business, which is controlled by The National Football League and the team owners.
As I was reading through Josh’s book, I developed a better understanding what the physician was explaining.
When you read through Josh’s description of things like Fee for Services care, the demise of the Personal Physician, the concept of Accountable Care Organization, Bundles Payments for Care Improvement, the lack of shared information between medical facilities, which lead to patients having to have additional tests in order for the facility to begin treatment, etc.
I was also concerned to hear that physicians are compensated for referring a patient to a facility like when a patient in assisted living has a problem requiring them to go to a hospital and as a result the hospital physician prescribes the patent to be transferred to a rehabilitation center. The referring physician may receive a monthly payment for the referral.
Page after page, I read about other fees, processes, facilities, personnel and how the cost of providing care is escalating. It is no wonder that health care costs are escalating at a rate that should concern everyone.
I could go on and on with things I read about, but I thing the best thing is to recommend that most of us should pick up copy and learn for yourself. It is entirely possible that a runaway system could bankrupt you in the future unless you begin to learn what are the best options for you and your family.
One thing I am going to do is pick up a paperback version of this book and have it dog-eared in no time from going back and forth to better understand and plan.
Thank you Josh use for writing this book and I look forward to your future books on this subject.
To everyone else, this is one book not to pass up. Each of us needs to understand what is available, t what our rights are and how to get the right healthcare plan. Start by picking up a copy!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommend this book
Highly recommend this book! We siblings are managing the care for our mother with Alzheimer so Dr Luke's book touches on a personal note. His phrase "Wearing your servant's heart on your sleeve at all times with patients" and the respect he shows for all those working in health care is inspiring. Thank you for sharing your gift of knowledge and compassion with this book

4.0 out of 5 stars The America healthcare summed up
Although I don't live in the States and I'm not American I do try and keep up with the latest medical news as I am due to spend a fair bit of time there in the near future. What better way to get the information that you need than straight from the horse's mouth. Dr Luke has created a brilliant and informative book that outlines all of the issues within the American health care system. Dr Luke furthered his career by becoming the CEO of the hospital he worked for. So you could say that he has a much bigger insight of the issues within the healthcare system. The book isn't all negative it does share the positive parts as well. It simply explains the processes within the healthcare system and the reasons behind them. I am not a doctor, but I had no problem in understanding this book. I would highly recommend reading this book for anybody that wants to understand the logistics behind the Healthcare system.
