How to Survive: Lessons for Everyday Life from the Extreme World Hardcover – June 27, 2019
Purchase options and add-ons
'When it comes to survival and getting out of trouble, listen to this man. John is the real deal.'
Levison Wood
What is the connection between crawling through a jungle and your ‘to do’ list? What can ejecting out of a stealth bomber teach you about the importance of thinking the worst? What can surviving in extreme situations teach us about surviving everyday life?
John Hudson, Chief Survival Instructor to the British Military, knows what it takes to survive. Combining first-hand experience with 20 years of studying the choices people have made under the most extreme pressure, How to Survive is a lifetime’s worth of wisdom about how to apply the principles of survival to everyday life.
The cornerstone of military survival (surviving anything) is understanding the relationship between effort, hope and goals – a mindset that can be transposed anytime, anywhere. In How to Survive you will learn how this template for survival can be applied to any situation in your everyday life.
Through gripping first-hand accounts of near disaster and survival stories from across the extreme world you will learn that by following these principles you can develop the mindset that will allow you to make better decisions under pressure, which are as equally applicable to first dates and presentations as to climbing Everest and getting lost at sea.

"John is knowledgable and passionate about his subject and given the slightest excuse he will demonstrate his skills. With nothing more than a bow, drill and some fungus, he showed me how it is possible to set fire to an office."

It's both practical and entertaining, as the author pivots back and forth between accounts of hair-raising true survival stories and pragmatic advice we can all apply to the working world, boardroom, or colleague relations.
His knowledge of the subject matter is first-rate. He might just have the best job in the world, too.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 21, 2020Perhaps I had read a lot of books by SEALs that my expectation went awry. I was not as satisfied as the tens of other reviewers who rated this a five star. Readable definitely. A top priority? I doubt.
p.s. Below please find some favorite passages of mine fyi.
Try putting your free hand on the top of your stomach just below the ribs. Close your eyes to concentrate…only breathe through your nose…Try to breathe in and out slowly to a count of four; four in, four out, feeling your stomach rise and fall. This slow, deep breathing rebalances the amounts of oxygen and carbon dioxide in your blood and disengages our primitive fight or flight response….Once you get good at it you can try triangular breathing where you hold the inhale for another count of four before you exhale. Try it lying down if you find it hard to get to sleep. (Rest and Digest vs Fight or Flight) Pg27
On average you’ll breathe to 11k liters of air – the volume of a cement truck…At rest, in a benign climate, your body consumes energy at a rate of around 100W, and over a day that can burn around 1.5kCal…. You’ll use up 1.5 litres of water a day, 500ml each through respiration, perspiration and urination….Get too cold or too hot by as little as 5*C change in core temperature, and you could be unconscious in minutes, dead in hours…If you’re working in Arctic of around -20*C, your requirements can easily go up to 6-8kCal a day. pg68
Use the survival question “What will harm me first?” at work by asking “What’s the single most important thing to do?” pg85
- Reviewed in the United States on August 27, 2019I really enjoyed the style of writing, it was more like having a conversation versus just being told to important facts. This book helps give a new perspective on life issues and how to deal with stress and how important the way a person thinks determines how well they can handle a situation. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who needs help with their everyday lives.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you Teach Survival add this book to your Library
John Hudson had written an excellent book that should make everyone that is an enthusiastic student of survival or an instructor or Bushcraft, Survival or SERE open up and thoroughly read. Much of the book deals with the Psychology of Survival, but he goes well beyond this subject dealing with multiple sources of stress, leadership challenges and travel or both groups and individuals. He seamlessly mixes his extensive knowledge of survival with case studies from the 18th Century right up to today. He points out quite rightly that the best way to learn something is to teach it and Johns real-world teaching experience shows through on nearly every page. He always attempts to slit apart the lessons to be taught to those trying to evade captures and those simply trying to be survival until rescued. Lastly, he points out to all of us whether students or instructors of survival that we can always learn and even after 26 years of teaching survival I learned from this book. As a fellow author and survival instructor, I highly recommend you buy this book and add it to your Library of survival and bushcraft manuals.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Practical Survival Book for the Everyday
Books about survival would seem to be the ultimate of practicality, but in reality we are just as likely to win the lottery as to need and use the skills they contain. For the vast majority of us these books are just an interesting fantasy, only relevant in the event of Armageddon.
This book is different, it takes the experiences and skills of survival that the author has acquired and finds a relevance in the everyday. The examples of survival are recounted in fascinating detail and the lessons learned are carefully explained. After each chapter it is essential to pause and consider how to apply it to your own life.
A book full of life hacks, well researched, well written and well worth a read. Easy to read and understand, it makes so much sense. A great book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good basic informative book.
I liked the easy style it's written in. The book basically consists of several real life survival stories - of people who had prepared for the circumstances they found themselves in - and for some who sadly didn't, and consequently didn't survive. The writer also gives some very good advice on how to use your time wisely. To plan for the future, and to overcome any career "inertia" you may have. A lot of the advice given is common sense (which I think many of us - well I admit that I fall into this) often overlook in our day to day living - or we can "overcomplicate" situations, which then render making relatively simple choices, very difficult. A useful book on the whole. I haven't been given any inducements to write this review. P. Edwards. North Wales.
