Golden: The Miraculous Rise of Steph Curry Paperback – October 3, 2017
Purchase options and add-ons
Golden is the first book to provide an all-access look at Steph Curry and the team that has fueled Dub Nation—by longtime Warriors beat reporter and Bay Area News Group sports columnist Marcus Thompson, the go-to expert on all things Golden State.
A lifelong Warriors fan turned insider Thompson is uniquely qualified to tell the definitive story of a singular talent, pulling back the curtain on the crazy work ethic and on-court intensity that make Curry great—and the emphasis on family and faith that keeps him grounded.
Combining the competitive grit and fun-loving spirit of his mother with the mild demeanor, easy charm, and sharp shooting of his father, former NBA player Dell Curry, Steph Curry derives support and strength from his close-knit kin and his commitment to Christianity. This hard-working, wholesome image however is both a blessing and curse in a League of big personalities. Thompson unravels the complicated underpinnings of the Steph Curry hate with a nuanced analysis of how class and complexion come into play when a child with an NBA pedigree becomes the face of a sport traditionally honed on inner-city black top and dominated by the less privileged.
With unprecedented access, Thompson draws from exclusive interviews with Steph Curry, his family, his teammates, Coach Steve Kerr, and the Warriors owners to bring readers inside the locker room and courtside with this remarkable athlete and man.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 8, 2024Being a GSW fan as well as a Steph Curry fan I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The author covered many aspects of his life I didn’t know about until I read this book. Today he’s known as the superstar we see on the basketball court but there’s so much more behind that star that made him who is today. This book includes interviews by his family & coach. Steph wasn’t made to play basketball. At 6’3” he was unlikely to succeed. He struggled in high school but showed humility not every player has but gave him the drive that got him into a college not known to the basketball world. Steph changed that. His hard work along with his humility paid off as his drove his team to the Sweet 16. This was a shock to the college basketball world. He has a drive like no other sports player I’ve known of. His Christian upbringing played a role in this as well as the tremendous amount of support by his parents. He endured the racism of a biracial family. Due to his college success he was chosen by the Warriors & has become the greatest shooter of all time. He may appear to be arrogant to some but he has true humility many have no idea exists. The author writes this book in a way that is easy to follow & this book would be an easy read for a young reader. I definitely recommend!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 26, 2017Marcus Thompson II is the Tim Kawakami of his generation. His insights into bay area sports and especially the Golden State Warriors are second to none. Like Tim Kawakami before him, Marcus reports and writes for the people. Reading Marcus' work feels like being inside the locker room with his many keen observations and opinions on people, personalities, and hoop. Nobody has built a stronger relationship with or has more access to Stephen Curry. For this reason, Golden: The Miraculous Rise of Steph Curry will become "The Jordan Rules" of the modern era of the NBA. It's a must read for any hoops fan, and especially those who love a story about an underdog who was dismissed and written off repeatedly until his talent, perseverance, dedication, and faith made him one of the all time greats. If you like the NBA, GS Warriors, Steph Curry, Marcus Thompson II, or even Tim Kawakami, then Golden belongs on your bookshelf.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 24, 2018Just before the release of "Golden", I saw an interview with sports columnist and author Marcus Thompson II on NBC Bay Area Sports. I preordered the book and read it quickly during the 2016-2017 NBA season. I just completed a second read now.
As a sports writer, Marcus Thompson offers more than a biographical study; he analyzes many aspects of two-time MVP Steph Curry's family upbringing, training, character and challenges that have made him a game-changer for pro basketball in the second decade of the 21st century. Curry, at 6' 3" was considered two small to compete in the NBA. There were many who dismissed him, even when he was breaking records. Not only did Curry prove the experts wrong, in many ways, Steph Curry has changed the Golden State Warriors and the NBA. This is what makes Marcus Thompson's study a must read (I feel) for parents and coaches, for Curry and the Warriors have returned basketball to the status of a team sport, a home-town game - a game that is fun to play and a joy to watch, and which unites a community for the good.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 31, 2017Excellent behind the scenes analysis of Steph Curry. Already, now, when I watch him play I realize how much effort he puts into his practice routines. I also have a much better understanding of his congenial nature and the reason other players want to play on his team. Marcus Thompson wrote this book both with passion and attention to detail. Marcus, thank you for making Steph Curry closer to us as readers and for giving us a multi dimensional view of him, his basketball, and of Warriors’ Basketball. Great book!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 17, 2017You get the impressed that Step Curry worked very hard by what he has achieved. He doesn't have a big ego like many stars in the NBA and he has proven that by allowing Kevin Durant to be on his team. He is a lot about winning as a team and he has a good cast of players to help him win plenty of championship. One day n
He may even surpass Jordan with his 6 rings.
A good overview of how and why he is such a good ball player.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 21, 2019As a Bay Area native who grew up with the Warriors being terrible (save Run TMC, the We Believe team and the Spreewell-CWebb “what if” team) its been amazing to see the Steph Curry-Klay-Draymond era. This is a great look at Steph Curry and the upbringing that led to his humble (off court anyway) superstardom. While I give it a 5 star review I will say if you are an avid Warriors fan who has been watching Fitz and JB and listening to Tim Roye over the Curry era you won’t learn much you don’t already know from those sources. Still a quick and easy read that I highly recommend for any Steph Curry fan or Warriors fan or anyone wanting to see a refreshing story of a professional athlete worthy of the accolades and fame.

5.0 out of 5 stars Imprescindível para quem gosta de basquete
