Father Brown Mysteries The Innocence of Father Brown [Large Print Edition]: The Complete & Unabridged Original Classic Paperback – Large Print, July 21, 2014
Purchase options and add-ons
Mystery fans unfamiliar with Father Brown may find Chesterton's stories a bit different. Many of the stories don't quite fit either the standard ("Whodunit?") or inverted ("Howcatchem?") styles common to the mystery genre, and Father Brown is frequently less concerned with the apprehension of the wrongdoer than with getting him to understand, and admit, the error of his ways.
With his powers of observation and attention to details, and a knowledge of crime and criminals derived in no small part from his years as a priest hearing confessions, Father Brown frequently finds the solution through a strictly rational reasoning process more concerned with psychological, spiritual and philosophic truths than with scientific investigation.
This particular volume contains twelve of Chesterton's original Father Brown adventures, published as individual short stories in 1910 and 1911 and first collected and published in book form under the title The Innocence of Father Brown in 1911.
A second collection of Father Brown mysteries, The Wisdom of Father Brown, (ISBN-13: 978-1500632137; ISBN-10: 1500632139) first collected and published in 1914, is also available from Summit Classic Press in a matching large print edition.

About the author

G. K. Chesterton (1874-1936) was a prolific English journalist and author best known for his mystery series featuring the priest-detective Father Brown and for the metaphysical thriller The Man Who Was Thursday. Baptized into the Church of England, Chesterton underwent a crisis of faith as a young man and became fascinated with the occult. He eventually converted to Roman Catholicism and published some of Christianity's most influential apologetics, including Heretics and Orthodoxy.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 25, 2019Excellent reading. Had me referring to my dictionary a few times for some interesting and uncommon words. Short stories that you can read all at once or just do one or two a day. Challenging plots for even the keenest crime drama buff. Fr. Brown is such an unassuming slueth, you hardly notice he is around until he is summing up the crime at the end of the story. I have been circulating this book among my friends and getting nothing but very positive feedback.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 13, 2020I have the original book of Father Brown Mysteries. The print is so small that I can hardly read it for very long. Glad I ordered this larger print version. I know it is a repeat of some of the stories, but they are good to read over. I am so glad I ordered it. Thank you for the fast service and great condition.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 6, 2020I watch this series on PBS and decided to try to find the book by this author they describe. I enjoyed reading these short stories.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 28, 2020The stories are the classic Father Brown. No need to say anything further about that. The problem with the large print edition is that, as with a number of large print books these days, the publisher scrimps on the amount of print that it uses in order to save a few bucks. My 101 year old mother loves to read large print books, when she is not playing bridge. A number of the books, however, including this one, give her problems because the print is faint. Large print books are made for people who have problems seeing. Why do they make the print, although large, faint? I would suggest not purchasing the large print edition unless you have pretty good eyesight.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 7, 2016As mentioned elsewhere, these are strange tales. All are intriguing, many are quite unexpected, some are disturbing in a psychological way, i.e. the insidiousness of evil and how it can masquerade as good. Not your standard mysteries, but well worth the time spent.

this new century.
