About the author

Tom Brennan is the pastor of the Bible Baptist Church in Dubuque, Iowa. His twenty-four years of pastoral experience also include planting a rural church in Pennsylvania and revitalizing an inner-city church in Chicago. Brennan’s Pen, his writing ministry birthed in 2014, includes a Quote List with daily emails for pastors, Brennan’s Pulpit, which emails his audio sermons to all who are interested, Concerning Jesus, his weekly blog, and four books to this point.
He and his lovely wife, Mandy, have three children. He is a domesticated creature, happiest at Saint’s Rest, his home, with a cup of tea and a stack of books to hand. Failing that, he can often be found hiking one of the many beautiful trails around Dubuque, nursing some piece of meat on the smoker, or pounding away furiously on his laptop within a few feet of his fireplace.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 19, 2021I love the heart behind this book. The author does not write in arrogance or in shallow cliches. There are many great strengths passed down from our Independent Baptist predecessors that must never be lost. He does lay out a number of weaknesses and sins that must be cast aside. His honesty and transparency on this section is refreshing. (It seems his slice of IFB experience was Hyles based so that is reflected somewhat throughout.)
The “cons” I found were few and minor in scope. The author does promote a local church only ecclesiology. His section on the KJV was maybe more of a summary and he didn’t dive too deep into the Greek text angle. When he did he used both Majority and TR arguments. He also stated that no other translation uses italics when the NKJV clearly does. He also omits the fact of a major language revision of the KJV in 1769, which undercuts his argument that the KJV is understandable.
Should you read this book? Absolutely! I find it highly appropriate for current times and a wonderful overview and summary of who we were, who we are, and who we hope to be. Thank you Brother Brennan for the work, the heart, and the truth of this book. I have been helped.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 26, 2024This is a great book and must read. The author is genuinely sincere and accurate. It was recommended to me and so I personally recommend it to anyone else.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 24, 2021I think I read the first half of this book in one sitting, staying up far later than normal. The first section of the book describes the positive (and biblical) aspects of independent Baptists. I found myself nodding, smiling, and thanking God for what I what I was raised in. If I stopped reading after that, I'd feel pretty good about myself and the rest of those who call themselves Bible-believing, independent...more adjectives...Baptists.
The next day, I started the second half of "Schizophrenic," and it's exactly as the author, Tom Brennan, described earlier in the book. Some of the faults, quirks, and unbiblical practices I've seen and experienced, others I've only heard about. I had to pour more thoughtful attention into the remainder of the book and meditate on the scripture references and his admonitions.
I found the chapter on Pharisees especially eye-opening. It's easy to think of a Pharisaical spirit as a synonym of hypocritical. But as Tom Brennan lays out, it's so much more than that; sadly, it's a pervasive fault among independent Baptists. The author was careful not to simply ride hobby horses with a chip on his shoulder. By my estimation, he trod lightly enough to remain loving, but deliberate enough to be truthful and forthcoming.
Brennan is clear that he doesn't want to turn people away from following Christ and being in faithful churches; I feel he did that tactfully. For me, this book strengthened my appreciation for independent Baptist churches, but also made me understand their pitfalls and systemic problems. I pray I will remember his points.
I will look forward to re-reading "Schizophrenic" in the future, and I know even more will jump out to me. I am thankful for the author's work, care, and honesty in writing this necessary book.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 7, 2016My husband and I both have read this and enjoyed it, but I wanted to give my perspective. My brother, a pastor, recommended that I look up Bro. Brennan's page because I live in a largely neo-evangelical area and was feeling "alone" as a baptist. Upon reviewing Tom's blog I was encouraged, but was skeptical because of the title of this book. I wondered, "Is he just a wolf pretending to be a baptist?"
Then I read a review on Amazon mentioning Tom's "truth bomb" about baptist's being "pharisees." My stomach sunk and I thought, "Well, he's probably a wolf. I should read his book objectively before marking him off."
I was so encouraged by this book. I loved the historical and theological review of WHY we are baptists (although, I didn't see eye-to-eye on 100% ... because I AM a baptist ... lol), but it was VERY refreshing.
In regards to the second half of the book, it was also exciting because it came from a BAPTIST viewpoint of how baptist leaders are discouraging the flocks by their anti-biblical practices. When Tom speaks of "Phariseeism" he isn't talking about how the emergent / contemporary church lashes out at us, but at honest things that plague us in our "separatist / reactionary" stances. He isn't talking about our stands against sin, but ... well, you would have to read it to understand it.
I have never met Tom, but I consider him a friend. He understands our battles. In part of the book, he wrote about how easy it is to find an independent baptist because he is the one alone in a corner with everyone ridiculing him. This seems to be the bible-believers lot in life and my brother was right; this book helped my husband and I to not feel so alone in this world as baptists. Thanks Bro. Brennan.
