Editorial Reviews

Review

Doody's Book Review Service, Sally Ling, MD, University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine --

"This is a very well put together 'notebook' containing essential information that medical students need to acquire during internal medicine rotations. It is presented in an appealing format that is effective for learning.

"The book was written to enable students to study more efficiently for their clerkships, shelf exams, and boards. It is intended to consolidate important information which otherwise may need to be extracted from multiple sources.

"The authors envision students using this book beginning in their second year of medical school. It will be particularly helpful during third and fourth year internal medicine clerkships.

"All standard subspecialty areas with the exception of psychiatry and women's health are covered. Important clinical points are highlighted in the margins. Tables, illustrations, and clinical vignettes are effectively used.

"This well edited 'notebook' concisely provides pertinent and reliable information on internal medicine related topics. It will be extremely useful during internal medicine clerkships, as well as for preparation for the shelf exam and boards."--Four-Star Review from Doody's Book Review Service (Weighted Numerical Score: 92).

This is one of the best review books I have read. Is it a little big? Sure, it's not the smallest review book but medicine is a very broad subject! This book does a great job in capturing the key aspects of the most important pathologies. In the past while reading review books for preclinical exams, I sometimes found material to be lacking in unexpected areas. If I'm following a patient with heart failure, this book discussed the most important aspects of heart failure. This is simply a review book and thus no matter how great it is, the material in this book cannot be used as a primary source and should be supplemented with something else like uptodate or Harrison's imo. For example, the book will discuss the beneficial use of some antibiotics like azithromycin in certain pulmonary patients, but doesn't discuss the anti-inflammatory role of macrolides like azithro. Despite this I really enjoy reading this edition of step up. I have found only a few mistakes in the book, but nothing content related. I am very pleased with this purchase and recommend this book to any student on a medical clerkship or preparing for the shelf!

Great review material for the medicine shelf. Its comprehensive, yet concise at the same time. If you like to learn things in a categorical way with lots of tables and comparing/ contrasting, this is a good high-yield study resource. Lots of figures on clinical algorithms. It also covers diagnostic testing, which was really useful on the wards--tells you what tests to get and in what order to get them. I wish I had this book when studying for Step 1 honestly.
I used this book + UWorld Q bank to study for the shelf and felt adequately prepared.

As far as the product quality itself--the book came in great shape without any mark-ups. It arrived quickly and was packaged well.

This is the book to have during third year IM rotation. The readings can be dense but everything you need to know to do well on your IM shelf exam and UWORLD Qbank Step 2 questions is all in here. No way I could do without it. There is no way you can share this book with other students in your friend group, as they suggest for other clinical rotations. YOU NEED your own copy for Step 2 studying.

I'm super happy with the seller as well because they were actually able to get to me sooner than expected.

This reminds me of FA but for 3rd year, but brightly colored with tougher pages. The information in this book is incredibly thorough! I'm amazed at the quality of the diagrams and the organization. This book is truly all you need to know to do well on the Internal Medicine shelf exams. It also doubles up as a good review for Step 2 CK

HOWEVER, my only qualm is that my new book came a little beat up on the edges. But that's more of a problem with the shipping than anything.

This is a phenomenal resource. Great for the wards. See a patient, look up the case in this book and present your A/P based on what is listed here in SUTM and you will be golden! If you are trying to crush the shelf, make sure to add other resources such as UW, emma holiday etc. But rest assured, this is a must have resource for the wards

I am a FNP practicing at outpatient internal medicine. I know this book is mostly used as a test prep and review, but I ordered this book simply wanted to study what many medical students do. As many reviewers pointed here, this book cannot be/shouldn't be used as a manual for real clinical setting, but it does have much valuable information that one needs to know especially practitioners working in internal medicine. I recommend this study material to fellow NPs or RNs who want to build basic knowledges on internal medicine.

This book was perfect for studying for my medicine rotation. It was very helpful and I felt prepared before my mini board, Step 2 still to come, although after I felt as though I failed but lucky that was not the case. I actually did pretty great!

If you have any specific question on the book feel free to message me.

Major typos aren't fixed from previous edition. A lot of info is outdated. I mean really a lot. They basically added some superficial content, but this book is still from 2008. There is no errata exists. Dont get me wrong, I think previous (or even the first) edition was terrific and format and pictures are still brilliant. But I dont think that selling 8 year old content for 60$ is great approach toward students.

There are few examples:

- Patients with a positive test result should undergo cardiac catheterization (p. 3).
- Hypertensive emergency: Systolic BP >220 and/or diastolic BP >120 (p. 52)
- Multiple myeloma has a poor prognosis with a median survival of only 2 to 4 years with treatment, and only a few months without treatment. The 5-year survival rate is about 10%. (p 356)

All of this info can lead to low score on exams, so this is very important.

Great for wards, studying for step 2, and reference in the future. A lot of information, but very thorough. Some friends did not like it as they preferred question based resources, but I loved it.
