About the Author
Polly and Bill Cunningham are married partners in the long trail of life. Polly Burke, formerly a history teacher in St. Louis, Missouri, now makes her home with Bill in Choteau, Montana. She is pursuing multiple careers as a freelance writer and wilderness guide and working with the elderly. Polly has hiked and backpacked extensively throughout many parts of the country.
Bill is a lifelong "Wildernut," as a conservation activist, backpacking outfitter, and former wilderness field studies instructor. During the 1970s and '80s he was a field rep for The Wilderness Society and Montana Wilderness Association. Bill has written several books, including Wild Montana, published by Falcon Publishing in 1995, along with numerous articles about wilderness areas based on his extensive personal exploration.
In addition to Hiking California's Desert Parks, Polly and Bill have coauthored several other FalconGuide books, including Wild Utah (1998), Hiking New Mexico's Gila Wilderness (1999), and Hiking New Mexico's Aldo Leopold Wilderness (2002), Best Easy Day Hikes Joshua Tree (2000), Hiking Mojave National Preserve (2008), Hiking Joshua Tree National Park (2008), Hiking Death Valley National Park (2008), and Hiking Anza-Borrego Desert National Park (2008).
Decades ago both Bill and Polly lived in California close to the desert-Bill in Bakersfield and Polly in San Diego. They enjoyed renewing their ties with California while exploring the state's desert regions for this book. Months of driving, camping, and hiking, with laptop and camera, have increased their enthusiasm for California's desert wilderness. They want others to have as much fun exploring this fabulously wide-open country as they did.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 25, 2016Often the second edition of a hiking guide is essentially the first edition, with maybe a type reset. This is especially true for national park guides. Due to a massive increase in environmental regulations, often instituted by the parks themselves, trail construction has virtually stopped in America's parks. But that didn't prevent Bill and Polly Cunningham from writing a nice new edition. Death Valley and surrounding areas offer a lot of nice hiking and this edition introduces more of it, including some areas to the south and west of the park. New hikes include the Ibex Sand Dunes and Saratoga springs, another pupfish abode.
But some things haven't changed. All the hikes in this guide are truly easy, or at least as easy as desert walking gets. Some are handicapped accessible. And all are beautiful. Each hike includes, as in earlier editions, a nice sketch map, point to point trail descriptions, and a nice write up on the natural and historical features you can see on each hike. I strongly recommend this book if you want to get out of your car and explore more of Death Valley on foot. I also strongly recommend you do these hikes from late October to the start of May. Because one other thing that hasn't changed is Death Valley is hot. And none of these hikes are easy in August!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 15, 2017It was very helpful giving a description of hikes and the length of each hike. As I am "mobility challenged", the book have me info as to which hikes would be appropriate. We spent 5 days in Death Valley and hiked every day! A valuable book for grandmothers!

- Reviewed in the United States on February 8, 2017This is a great book, and has been very helpful in planning our trip to Death Valley in April. Lots of good hikes are included; there is a lot to do there

- Reviewed in the United States on March 20, 2017I used this book on a recent trip to Death Valley. The trail descriptions were accurate and easy to follow.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 13, 2018This a small pocket book. The issue I have is the paper. This is a black and white book on basically newsprint. Inside are maps with colored gradients for elevations. However due to the quality of paper and ink, it is not possible to distinguish the given elevations.
