Strength Band Training Paperback – July 8, 2019
Purchase options and add-ons
Strength Band Training shows you how to maximize strength, speed, and flexibility in the gym, at home, or on the road. With more than 160 exercises and predesigned workouts for fitness and sport-specific training, you will discover why strength bands are the ultimate tool for targeting, isolating, rehabilitating, and developing every major muscle group.
The third edition includes a strength assessment index to measure progress, new chapters addressing training for older adults and rehabilitation, training tips connecting research to specific exercises, and injury prevention guidelines throughout. The book is organized to group exercises by upper and lower body strengthening, joint and muscle isolation, core stability, flexibility, and total body fitness. The full-color photos throughout the book showcase both flat bands and tubing.
The elastic resistance exercises allow you to add resistance in multiple directions—something free weights and machines cannot do—for resistance routines that can simulate sport-specific demands, strengthen your core, or help you prevent or recover from common injuries. The book has a total of 27 different programs designed for optimal fitness, team sport training, individual sport training, or rehabilitation.
Portable and easy to adjust, strength bands provide resistance for any level of strength, fitness, or ability. If you’re an athlete, fitness enthusiast, older adult, or someone recovering from injury, you will find the exercises and programs you need to improve strength, shape your physique, and regain movement.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 18, 2022Will help me with my yoga class. Uses different types of resistance bands, with an extensive list of exercises, which include which body part you are exercising/
- Reviewed in the United States on December 5, 2021I enjoyed that the book includes different types of muscle groups to target. You also have exercises that help if you want to have something specific, such as improving your strength and flexibility.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 7, 2020Sort of bummed it doesn’t mention heavier bands or show compound body exercises. I’ll probably look at it again and then sell it.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 30, 2020This book is the most informative book on the subject of resistance ban training. The illustrations are clear and the similarities between regular weights and resistance bands is explained. I found it to be very enjoyable!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 13, 2020As a nurse I appreciate how this book is direct and in a manual for “ how to do the exercises “ and not paragraphs of info. Pictures are wonderful.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 29, 2019Using a simple set of strength bands, Strength Band Training provides exercises for all the major muscle groups. All exercises include pictures. There are also variations and progressions included with every exercise. Some require a chair, an exercise ball or a small foam block to complete.
There is a special section with eighteen older adult exercises. Most are done seated and can be performed while watching television from an upholstered chair. They are intended to strengthen the senior’s body enough to move on to the other exercises in the book. There is also a section for exercising after injury.
Strength Band Training is as effective as weight machines when done correctly. This book is like having your own personal trainer at home 24/7. As a matter of fact, my former trainer used some of these exact same exercises with me using a weight machine at my gym. I have also done some of these exercises during physical therapy after surgery using bands.
It appears that this book is written for personal trainers and physical therapists to use in their work. There is no fluff here. Just a short overview with a picture of the muscles involved precedes the exercises for each muscle group. However, a regular person like me or you can cut out the middleman and become their own personal trainer using this book. Save the time and money for the trainer and even the gym! Get fit by exercising effectively with this excellent book and some inexpensive strength bands. 5 stars!
Thanks to Human Kinetics and Edelweiss+ for a copy in exchange for my honest review.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 23, 2020I was drawn to resistance band training as part of my physical therapy after spinal cord surgery. The work I did with the PT was very routine and not so interesting.
Then came COVID-19 and we were stuck at home and the PT facility closed. I got instructions from the PT on how to continue my work. I immediately went out and bought a series of bands and scoured the internet and especially YouTube for further routines to improve my program.
This is an excellent book for anyone interested in expanding their fitness program using resistance bands, or if you are already using resistance bands, the breadth of the exercises will surely complement anything you are currently doing.
I especially liked the circuit training for the fitness section which included circuits for the upper and lower body and a core circuit. For each exercise, there is a detailed explanation, a variation, and technique tips; also in some cases, there are training tips.
I am not quite sure whom the book was written for. The average user is probably not interested in the names of each of the muscles that are exercised, nor is she interested in the citations to the literature. Someone in PT or Sports Medicine might be interested is such, but I glossed over it.
The photography and descriptions are excellent and this book is imminently usable by the average fitness enthusiast. Resistance band training is a cost-effective way of staying fit while sheltered in place and I only wish I had found this book sooner.
I recently received 'Strength Band Training' as an ARC and I am voluntarily leaving this review.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pratico e chiaro
